    • Health Anxiety OCD | ...
    Health anxiety, formerly referred to as hypochondria is diagnosed as Illness anxiety disorder, somatic symptom disorder or sometimes panic disorder. It behaves like OCD due to the cycle caused by obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors like reassurance seeking, body symptom checking, ruminating, excessive googling and avoidance and safety behaviors.
    1. Reassurance Seeking
    2. Not Trusting Medical Providers
    3. Misinterpreting Symptoms
    4. Attaching Scary Stories
    5. Not Practicing Response Prevention
    6. Body monitoring and checking
    7. Excessive doctor visits and unnecessary testing
    8. Ruminating
    9. Not engaging in the rest of your life
    10. Avoiding Discomfort, Unknowing and Uncertainty
    Health anxiety can be relentless, and the cycle can take over your life until YOU put a stop to it.

    The scary stories one is so me! I get it from my mom I grew up with her telling me things like “this kid died from a stroke at 20” and the older I get the worse my health anxiety gets. I’ll convince myself I have something, get my blood tested and everything comes back great. I’ve gone to the ER for chest pains that ended up being just a really bad panic attack. It’s exhausting, there’s always something. Now it’s what if I have a brain tumor because I get migraines. I know the mind is so powerful and it’s all about changing the way you think, but when you’ve done it for so long or get exposed to terrifying news about someone else dying it’s so difficult to just think “I’m fine.” And actually believe it. This video made me tear up and I think it’s time to make changes even baby steps. The searching up every symptom and reading “possibly brain tumor or cancer” and I automatically jump to the worst case scenario is so real. Thank you for your videos, they are so helpful and it’s wonderful to read the comments and see how many people actually relate.

    What's helped me with health anxiety has been getting more in tune with my body and letting go of anxious thoughts through things like mindfulness meditation and reading books like "30 Days to Reduce Anxiety" by Harper Daniels and "The Power of Now" by Tolle.

      Yes, this is a common response to health anxiety, and that is to avoid everything medical. Do your best to move towards what’s reasonable. Could you commit to an annual checkup? I help clients to do exposures to their fears to extinguish their medical fears.

    My latest thing is pressure in my face, ears, and cheek area. I keep thinking it's an aneurysm or cancer. Even though the weather has been up and down and could simply be sinus. There is no pain, but it's uncomfortable. But the thoughts still make it worse. I also get lightheaded for a few seconds randomly, also tinnitus.

      I recognize your name and am so sorry you are going through this again. Health anxiety tends to rotate around the body. When one symptom is resolved, the brain will latch onto another one.
      The more the hyper focus and checking on the symptom, the more intense the sensations, concern and doubt. It is a viscous cycle. If you need help breaking the cycle, you may want to join my course and support group. You will learn what to do and have support during the recovery process. I would love to have you in the group. www.paigepradko.com/healthanxiety

    Thank you for this interesting video😊 Im basically Jess. I also have a med-background & that is a huge problem because I do test doctors a lot to see their knowledge (which many of them were lacking😮). I have many of this hypochondriac symptoms but the problem is when you actually don't know if you maybe are right. My nr 1 fear I have now for example is that I know my grandmother on my fathers side had ovarian cancer, i know from medical research that grandmother on fathers side has 20% risk to happen to me, it would be only 10% if it was on my mothers side (Im not totally sure on the procents but it was something like that) and this is the issue where I know i worry a bit early for this (im 40) BUT on the other hand, is just facts. So now Im wondering if i should check this or not, my other concern is my heart but that is something i start to realize that is just nervous. But the other thing at least has a real potential risk, what to do with this when you know that this could be a risk in reality?

      @PaigePradkoTherapy  8 місяців тому +2

      Hi. I am sorry you have these fears and concerns. There is always some possibility to health scares, but you have to look at probabilities versus possibilities. At this point, having regular checkups seems to be what you can do and consult with your physicians to see what they might recommend. And then, you will have to trust so that you can live your life without being stuck in the anxiety cycle of worrying and researching.

    Hello mam very informative video as usual, but I have a question,I saw an old video of yours about cbt you talked about labeling a negative thought and then thinking something positive and writing it down, isn't it a reasurence seeking from your own self?or we should not do cbt if we have health anxiety?

    • @PaigePradkoTherapy
      @PaigePradkoTherapy  7 місяців тому +1

      Hi. Yes, I do cover different techniques on different videos. I think you are correct. Labeling a thought as a worry or an anxious or negative thought is a cognitive defusion technique and helps to separate you from your thought. Giving yourself a more realistic message of what you are feeling can be helpful. Let’s say you feel a heart palpitation and yet have been thoroughly evaluated and know that you do not have any cardiac problems. Then, reminding yourself that it is normal to feel what you felt and that you have evidence that nothing is wrong with your heart can correct a negative thought about the palpitation. I could be looked at as reassurance, but I look at that as correcting a misinterpretation of what you felt.
