  • The Abandoned Manitoba 2 video series by Graham Street, Shaun Cameron, and Gordon Goldsborough visits ghost towns, vacant buildings, and other historic sites from Manitoba's past. Join us as we explore back roads to places that tell great stories about how things used to be, and how we have ended up where we are today.
In this video, we visit Brandon where businessman Trevor Peters tells us about his family's work with the legendary Thunderbird Bowling Alley, established in 1962. Then, we go underground to see the watery remains of the abandoned lanes.

The sprinkling in of nouns like "kerplunks" is what makes watching these documentaries such a unique experience.

Thank you for this video. This was very interesting to me. I left Brandon years ago.
I worked at Thunderbird bowling alley fixing the machinery that reset the pins. I also lived in the building next door to it.

I went there a few times growing up. Often to bowl and see a movie if you were really having a day. Hard to remember how it was of old but I'm sure there are lots of birthday party photos taken there in the 80s and 90s. A shame to see it as it is, and the whole downtown core. Thanks for another great peek into history!

It's really weird seeing a place I spent so much time as a "historical' abandoned building.

My wife worked there '91-'94, and ate there regularly '99-'00. She echoes the same sentiment, but adds some colour commentary about the owner, too 😂.

Walmart and Canadian Tire killed every down town in every big town in Canada...yet their day is coming too. Things change and I'm not going to spend 1 minute worrying about it. Thanks for the video.

Probably for the best you don’t spend time worrying about it. You would spend the rest of your life doing such..
Walmart is absolutely not going anywhere..

Gord! Please see if Pierre can get you going in the rumoured tunnels under brandon that were for heating many buildings down town. Thanks for sharing this!

I remember that place - lots of fun. Someone once dropped their bowling ball on the street out front and it rolled down to Rosser before being caught. No damage to anyone!

I always heard of an underground bowling alley growing up, I thought it was an urban legend. Crazy to think that was right below in the middle of downtown!

My father, Ray Savoie, and my uncle, Guy Savoie, operated the bowling alley for a number of years back in the sixties. As a very young lad, I spent many Saturday’s there. To keep me busy, my dad would have me polish all the bowling balls every Saturday morning, for which I earned my weekly allowance of a dollar. The task took pretty well all the morning.

The basement might have been well built, but it did not have the concrete pillars until the bowling alley was removed and they were using the ground level for parking. It did have a building on top of it, a restaurant/lounge called Huggy's that was torn down.
