Without the coup and the Tories winning a General Election he might have been in office as long as Angela Merkel. That's 16 years in total.

After a general election or party leadership victory for the ruling party, the leader of the winning/ruling party goes to Buckingham Palace and the Queen invites them to become Prime Minister, and asks if they are in a position to form a government. That's why it's called Her Majesty's Government.
