You were always cool to me man that's why I always gave you free Mountain Dew from the soda fountain where I worked (Eastridge market). I saw the IT factor in you the first time I saw you play live with "Of all things!" I am very happy for your success. You deserve it! Whatever you release, I buy. And yes I own the Blink CD without the 182 and I wore the rabbit shirt before it became common place. Fan for life.

@@SonikJesus It actually does from a sound and structural standpint. I'm pretty sure that's what he meant.
@@bluepearl_22 all pop songs sound the same in terms of structure; just variations of verses, choruses, and bridges. that's hardly an argument. sound? ok, he used a guitar and drums based instrumentation. that's rock music. just because BCR and blink both share those two extremely general characteristics, doesn't make them sound the same. BCR's lyrics are way different in tone, the guitars are more experimental and raw, there are other instruments besides drums and guitars, there's more feedback and abrasiveness, and the chord progressions are different and darker. The only thing that's the same is Tom's voice. Even then, the melodies that he sings are a different style than in blink. BCR sounds like a post-hardcore band while blink sounds like a pop rock band.
@@SonikJesus You can't claim that BCR sounds like post-hardcore and then use the argument that all pop songs sound the same. If anything's a bad argument then it's that. Clearly you missed my point regarding sound if your next argument revolves around guitar and drums being basic elements of rock music. Of course they are. By that logic ALL bands that use these instruments would sound the same but the fact that they don't kinda disproves your point on that. I never said that BCR wasn't experimental and sounds exactly the same as Blink. My point is that regardless of the vocals you can clearly hear that these songs were written by Tom/Travis because you can recognize a lot of the song patterns they used when writing Jacket (which makes sense considering that was their last creative output). Hence, it wouldn't have been a huge shocker (at least not to me) if songs like All Systes Go, And I, Watch the World or Tiny Voices would've been on the follow up album to Jacket cause they sound like a natural progression of the blink sound imo. If anything this album showcases how Tom/Travis slowly started to diversify their own sound and try out new tools next to the blink song tools. I give you the point on the lyrics which imo are the most "different" thing about BCR. Of course it's much darker in terms of its overall themes and vibe but saying it sounds nothing like blink is inaccurate imo.
I think what bands loose when they go straight into recording with out really working out the details is the quality of these songs that are coming out, there's something to be said about having a label breathe down your neck to make the song you can make for the album instead of "Ok cool so this kinda works, lets roll with it."
You could tell me that these two were brothers and I would simply smile and nod.
Can't believe Mark is still so bitter about BCR. Tom wanted to moreso detach himself from the "brand" Blink and try other things, obviously if it was just the 3 of them writing music on this project that would be impossible. He probably feels it was a slight to him because he was the one "not invited", but I feel like if anything that proves Mark has a great influence on the blink brand and sound, while Travis has less. If anything, he should take it as a compliment that he wasn't invited. BTW, BCR, AVA, and Tom's solo project are all fantastic. So happy Tom decided to branch off and try other things.

Ya I feel like Mark just wants to do Blink and not branch out and do other things. Tom on the other hand is that type of person always try to get better and try new things. They are just two different personalities it worked for a long time, but they eventually grew apart sadly.
So if your two best friends go off and start another band without you after climbing to fame with you... you don't think you'd feel the slighest bit bitter? Mind you this is how these guys eat. Lots of musicians get pushed off to the side, especially bassists. Obviously it does no one any good to be bitter, but my point is to put yourself in his shoes.... I can't even fathom what that would be like
I get this perspective and agree with it, however, they were best friends. I know it’d hurt pretty bad if my best friend decided he wanted to do something “more deep and serious” and decided to do it without me, but bring our other friends along for the ride. It would make me feel like he thought I was only here for the fun and good times and jokes and not the rough and ugly, even though we’re supposed to be “ride or die” and I have his back through everything. Tom can do whatever he wants, Mark doesn’t HAVE to be involved in everything he does, but from Mark’s perspective it seems like he started BCR cause he saw blink as more of a joke which could be insulting because Mark puts his entire heart and soul in to the band and apparently it “isn’t something that can handle the depth of BCR”
many people have it wrong Tom wanted to go Darker and change the direction of Blink and Mark said lets keep it the way it is, they argued over the direction so Tom bailed and did it his way as you see Boxcar is a lot darker than Blink ever was yet then AVA was lighter more Blinks style the good news is that Tom & Mark can work it out and make new songs it's not over yet

@@isaacaversano1478 Mark literally said he doesn't like people leaving a band too create music that sounds exactly like the band there in. Yet he went and formed +44 and Mark is still triggered Tom's side projects became more popular Than Marks. That's why Mark is now quite literally selling Blinks sound out to make it more mainstream and pooular, which is what totally goes against any band who claims themselves as Punk Rock.

Was thinking the same thing, but Box Car Racer doesn't sound anything like blink-182 did in 2001 or earlier.

A lot of Box Car Racer could have comfortably been part of take of your pants and jacket, it really wasn’t that left field as people make it out to be. Also, play any AVA riffs prior to The Dream Walker without delay, and try and tell anyone that it’s any different than a lot of blink riffs
+44 also sounds very blink, not just BCR, so he's just shooting himself in the foot by saying that. So I don't think he's intentionally referring to BCR in a malicious way, but ... who knows
@@user-vc5rp7nf8f I dont think he is referring to Box Car Racer in a malicious way but I would say he is talking about BCR because back then Tom said he did it because " he was experimenting" a darker tone and stuff, but there isnt much diference at all, I mean think about "There is" and "What Went Wrong" both are the same kind of song, subject, recording and acoustic vibes, we know that things got weird between them after BCR and when Tom quit they just ketp doing whatever they were doing before but with some synths and eletronics, thats what plus 44 is, blink 182 without tom with some synths and eletronics.. but come on, they didnt even had a chance to call Tom, the mother fucker changed his number.

I love how he took a shot at Tom with why start another band if it sounds the same as your other band “Boxcar Racer” but honestly I love BCR more than some Blink albums

Big slight at BCR. I’ve seen Tom talk about this in interviews. I’ve always been convinced that Marks feature on that album was to keep the peace and less then a simple collaboration. I was always torn because I always understood what he meant in the sense that if you needed a drummer why wouldn’t you call up you’re local bad ass that you happen to play with in another band to help you with a passion project. But the thought must’ve crossed all of their minds that it was a bad idea as far as a 2 of the 3 piece band we’re writing, playing/performing without the other.
Gotta love Mark. His songs are usually my favorite. My favorite Blink songs are Josie and A New Hope. Just perfect pop punk songs. Have to admit, I miss the old Tom, but really didn’t like Neighborhoods, the new Tom had gotten too far away from the Blink I love. Mark still keeps the soul of the old Blink in the newer songs, so I really liked California.

BCr had a song with mark hoppus so idk why he is bitter. Tom just had a lot of emo shit to get out and whether he likes it or not they’re not blink songs to me at all. BCr was just a few heavier dark songs Tom needed for Catharsis. I think toms nuts by the way
If you were in a band then you'd probably understand. And even then, it would be hardly comparable to the pressure and the scope these guys had to operate back in the day.

YEAHHH MARK! You killed it at the battle of the bands at the Empire Fair Grounds back in 1991. I remember your band brought the house down! I was in the band Havoc. Remember that crappy heavy metal band with the singer who you couldnt hear? Yep, that band. I was shocked as hell when Of all things didn't win. Family Jewels won! I mean they were good too, very social D inspired but I really think your band should have won. Case in point. To this day I can still see your band playing "Silly Girl" by the Descendants. Should have won..oh well...you won something far farrrrrr better instead. A very successful musical career. The chance of making it is what......a million to one or something along those lines?

It’s sad to hear how he thinks their new process to record songs is a step forward. i think the quality of their songs really dropped ever since they started doing it this way 15 years ago. You end up having very well recorded mediocre songs.
I mean when you think that a song like time to break up wasn’t considered good enough to make the final cut on TOYPAJ and nowadays a song like bored to death gets its own music video...

Such a shitty and un-fun way to write music tho. 90% of the fun in being a band is writing the other 10% is a bonus. You can or at least I can tell when a band wrote the album in a studio or not, this is why band's earlier material is usually the most organic not just a band trying to make a "product".
