  • To reduce greenhouse gas GHG emission from its coal based power plants, NTPC intends to utilize paddy straw and other agro residue based pellets along with coal for power generation through biomass co-firing which is a technology recognized by UNFCCC to mitigate carbon emission and also termed as carbon neutral fuel which is a renewable source of energy.
NTPC has already forayed into procurement of biomass pellet on a large scale for using with coal and issued a tender for procurement of ~ 20 MMT for 4 years (i.e. 5 MMTPA) for 17 projects of NTPC. Under short term contracts awarded in 14 power plants for 4.56 LMT, NTPC has already fired above 30000 MT at its 7 power stations.
To understand the co-firing of biomass with coal, Corporate Fuel Management team in co-ordination with Dadri Fuel Management/ Chemistry team has developed a short movie on biomass co-firing. The main aim of making the film is to acquaint with what is biomass co-firing, why is it called carbon neutral technology, how NTPC has shown demonstrative leadership on biomass co-firing, processes involved in co-firing for generating electricity, effect on environment and potential source of mass generation of employment in rural sector etc.
