Still can't wrap my head around the fact that Mimi has been gone for a year and a half now.. I'm not gonna lie and pretend Low was my favorite band of all time, but they were a constant staple of my teens / adulthood.. I discovered them back in 2005 when The Great Destroyer came out. Pitchfork rated it 5.5 / 10 but everyone online was talking about how amazing it was, so I decided to roll the dice on it and buy it to hear it for myself. I was IMMEDIATELY hooked. Then Drums and Guns came out a couple years later, it was definitely my favorite LP of 2007. After that, I sort of stopped following them closely. They kept releasing more albums, I'd check em out and feel like they were decent, but they just weren't doing the same thing for me as The Great Destroyer and Drums and Guns.. Still though, both of those albums remained constants in my day to day life through the 2010s. It was weird.. when I found out Mimi died, I unexpectedly felt very guilty.. I felt like all this time I totally took for granted how incredibly talented Mimi Parker / Low truly was. I felt like I should have payed more attention to those subsequent albums.. like I should have given them a few more spins to see if they would have grown on me. All those times Low was playing here in Detroit and each time I'd tell myself I'd catch them next time they come back through.. I 100% regret it in retrospect. I've since decided to give each of those subsequent albums another chance, and they are all honestly great. ESPECIALLY Hey What and Double Negative. Both of those albums are absolutely mindblowing. Drums and Guns will always be my favorite Low LP just because of my personal experiences growing up listening to them / the nostalgia.. but dammit, the second half of Low's career was better than the first. I didn't figure it out until Mimi was gone. I don't know why I felt compelled to share all of this, lmao.. Hope everyone is doing well.
i've been heartbroken from the minute i heard them for the first time in 2001. one of my favorite bands of all time, and my number one is led zeppelin. go figure. i'm 61. i was incredibly fortunate to see quite a few shows in the PNW and austin between 2001 and 2012. virtually every show was spellbinding. so sad that mimi is in another place now. thank God we have so much music of theirs to enjoy. i LOVE this song. i have covered it several times over the years and it always makes me misty. thank you alan.
One of my top ten albums of all time (although "You See Everything" is my fave somg of theirs). Two of the most beautiful voices in modern rock entwined so perfectly. One of the greatest material losses in my life was losing the tour t-shirt i bought at the first concert of theirs i attended. It was mint green with an image of a giant octopus on it. Man i loved that shirt.
Words fail us in moments like this. Sentimentality Sunflower may be a gateway for many of us. To the sonic musical vision that is the band Low. I am getting the impression they are way more Beloved than known. So many of us listened to these songs in are own unique way and times. There is something underground about Low. Thank you for the many years of wonderful notes, I feel i am more elvolved because of your Art.
This song is amazing... It reminds me of a time where I first discovered Low and went through their back-catalog and fell in love with gems like this one
Beautiful. Thanks for sharing this song with me so long ago, Tim. It always remained a favorite and now I'm finally exploring their work and catching up to their greatness. Hope to see them live one day soon.
My girlfriend and I took a sunflower from Southwest Michigan to Chicago. We put it in a pot in front of the building we were staying in there. We named it Beatrice and now it's with Mimi in another space
Does anyone know the name of their keyboardist in this video? I've seen him in some of their live performances throughout 2011, and this is the last one (2012), that I've seen him with the rest of the band. After this point, I'd seen Steve Garrington with both bass + keys setup, but no trace of their keyboardist here. I have not seen him listed as one of the past members, so I wonder if he was perhaps their touring keyboardist only and not the official band member. It's a shame he doesn't perform with them anymore, because his keyboard skills really added so much to their sound, especially live.
His name is Eric Pollard. He originally was the drummer of Alan's side project Retribution Gospel Choir (and Steve started out as their bassist), and he also makes music under the name Actual Wolf. I think it's pretty safe to assume that he was a touring member.
Rest in power, Mimi Parker!

This song always cuts to my core in a way that's difficult to pin down.

Great song. RIP Mimi Parker.
First heard this in 2005. Life changing.
I first heart it at Bumbershoot Seattle Sept 2001. I was coaxed to go see them; had never heard of them. Walked out of there a life-long fan.
Same
Vale Mimi Parker. Thanks so much for the wonderful music you made.

Oh wow no whoops or hollars with the sounding of the guitar before the song.
