Big Kob on a tiny hook while fishing for White Steenbras! Small hooks can catch big fish too!

- I went for a quick afternoon throw in the hopes of catching a white steenbras or a baardman! The session started off very slow. I decided to throw a small bait on a 2/0 circle hook. Not long and I convinced young white steenbras to eat my bait! some time went by and I decided to make the infamous last throw, that's when I really got lucky! My bait of choice was a small bloodworm on a tiny 2/0 circle hook! Once I hooked the fish, I knew I was in for a fight as I knew my tackle was boxing way below the fighting class! After taking my time and testing my patience I finally landed the massive kob! Kob go by names like daga Salmon, kabeljou and in Australia they are known as Mulloway or Jewfish.

Hi Zander, thanks that you try to show us the how you read the gulley's and waves and banks. Can I ask how far, in this case with the bloodworm (your first) cast, was the "back" bank onto which you casted the bait? It's difficult to determine on the video.

Hi, there will be some galjoen to target as well as white steenbras. Ideally contact Rean Rademeyer he does guided tours there and knows the area very well he will give you some great tips and you will learn a lot from him, especially in the false bay area🤙🏻

Amazing fish... Next time you need to measure in a hurry just use your trace with the hook at the nose and tie a knot at the tail then you can measure at home.. Tight lines

I would appreciate it if you could abstain from collecting these 'pregnant' prawns so that they may lay their eggs and complete their breeding process. @@reubenkruger Well Xander has a large following here on youtube. I think a lot of novice (and experienced) anglers watches his videos to learn more about fishing. Xander does a great job at promoting sustainable fishing practices. I wouldn’t like to see hundreds (if not way more) fishermen think it’s ok to keep prawns (or any other kinds of bait species) with eggs. When you have a large following you should strive to set the right example, right across the board.
Hi Barry, yeah sorry about that. I try not to take those but they do slip through. I pumped on the low tide on the dry sand and not on the higher tide as one should do. So when the prawn is out I just see them moving underneath the sand,pick up and put it in the bucket. Usually when I see them full of eggs I leave them, but they do slip through from time to time.

Kob populations are greatly declining on all our Coastlines and large breeding kob like this helps sustain the population. Theirs nothing wrong with taking a fish or two , but think of the future and conservation. And i don't think his wasting his time , his passing on valuable tips and skills to other anglers making these videos and being a great role model for other anglers. Hope you understand where his coming from.
