The Patty Duke Show Season 1 Episode 28 Patty finds a pen pal through the newspaper and soon decides that her new pal is superior to Richard. (source: IMDb)
Patty and Richard's writing campaigns bring to mind Rupert Holmes long ago hit "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)." It featured two people looking for a fresh randevu with the singer responding to an ad in the paper with his own letter. When he went to meet her at O'Malleys he found "it was my own lovely lady."
Pen Pals remind me of the internet: everyone is unknown or anonymous; they may be whomever they wish. My first experience with someone pretending to be somebody else was an eye-opener, 👀 and I've been on guard ever since
This episode is a clever rework of the plot of the 1937 Hungarian play Parfumerie, adapted to became the 1940 Hollywood film Shop Around the Corner, which in turn became the 1949 musical film In the Good Old Summertime.
I always felt that Eddie Applegate looked ridiculous playing Patty Duke's high school boyfriend. He is supposed to be playing a high school kid but he looks at least 30 years old. In real life Eddie Applegate was actually 30 years old when he started playing Patty's high school boyfriend on the show. Some extreme conservatives might even say he was playing a pedophile.
The original catfishing lol not much changes! This is one of my favorite episodes! Thank you so much for posting all of these.
I loved this show and loved Patty Anna Marie Duke!!! God Bless You in Heaven dear angel friend Anna Patty Duke
she's only in Heaven if she was a true follower of Jesus Christ :)
The show has heart. Patty Duke was my 1st crush as a kid. My forever crush it turns out.

"I want something more out of life than milkshakes." They should have had Richard say "Well next time order a hamburger and fries with your shake."
That's clever. I think it would have worked well
😄

Haha...in the background at the malt shop a couple is dancing the "Hammer Dance" from previous episodes.

Great line (Patty there is an old adage, a boyfriend at the door is worth two pen pals on paper)
I suppose the meaning should be clear but I've had a hard time understanding it. Could you explain maybe?
...unless the pen pal on paper is the same person as the boy at the door
@@SnazzyDetritus But when you don't know that the pen pal on paper is the same boyfriend at the door as in Patty case.

Great line from William Schallert as Martin Lane (Patty there is an old adage, a boyfriend at the door is worth two pen pals on paper)
Does this remind anyone of Shop Around the Corner a little bit?
Old Hollywood Lover "The Shop Around The Corner" is one of James/Jimmy Stewart under rated films.
Pen Pals...yesterday's Facebook danger....
shop around the corner....you,ve got mail.....
Awesome show....but why would her father suggest that she meet her pen pal? That could be super dangerous, meeting someone you dont know.
patty and Rich
WOW! Is Patty EVER selfish!!
I wasn't sure about Richard at first, but the actor's really funny.
I would love to live in Brooklyn heights...
one of the most affluent and expensive areas of brooklyn today
Do you like Pinocoladas?!
Hiliarous👻
Me thinks Rupert Holmes got the idea for Escape ( The Pinia Collada Song) from this
episode.
I don’t understand why Patty was interested in this guy when she already has a boyfriend
Patty's selfish that way. She gives Richard up when she meets a pretty face because she KNOWS that he'll always come back to her :(
Was that Tim Considine at the malt shop?
Tim..a cutie

Nah adults play teens all the time. Rich and Patty also never kissed so it wasn’t anything inappropriate
@@Benmeover Um, YES they did! Once in THIS season in fact!
@@KristaBrewer-rq7mo yeah I seen the episode weeks after making this comment 😭
