AAA roadside assistance is a good thing to have! I highly recommend it for this sort of predicament. The guy I carpooled with to Fursquared got a flat tire and I used my roadside assistance to have someone come out and put his spare tire on!
Maybe they were waiting to make sure you guys eventually got out okay? Lol might be easier to imagine when I haven't seen them. But you know taxis exist though, right? Uber isn't the only way to get a ride anywhere. Taxis have more reliable prices too.
