    you clarified the misconception really well, its kinda annoying when reviewers tell you smaller sensor captures less light when their sensor pixel size is just same size as full frame... its only the field of view that is doubled.... MFT aperture size is not doubled to match the light capture of 35mm but to match depth of field of same focal length.. basically a MFT f1.4 will let in the same light as any other format F1.4 wether it is a tiny sensor or full frame sensor.

      @BloddySk Thanks for your information. I understand the aperture is 1/3 bigger. And yes, ISO 6400 creates tons of noise on my Sony A7R4/A7R3 already, I have many reasons to believe for the 4/3 sensor, even at ISO 3200, the noise will be a lot. That's why I am curious how this lens work with the EM1 III body to shoot flying birds. Apart from that, I think EM1 III would make a great wildlife body paring this 150-400 Pro lens, not to mentions there is a built-in *1.25 teleconverter. I wish Canon or Sony would create some lens like this. Olympus lenses are so beautiful and handy to use.

    • @shinysurfer
      @shinysurfer 3 роки тому +1

      I wouldn't do that. I own that combo, plus a 24-105 and a 85 1.4 and despite everything you'll read online about the benefits of it and how much you can crop, etc, it is the most difficult gear combo to work with I have ever used. The ibis in Sony is pretty much useless, and the A7RIV ISO performance is not great above 3600. That means you are tripod bound if you want sharp photos. To each their own obviously and the sony is amazing for many other applications, including wildlife (which is what I mainly do) but you need fast enough shutter speeds and good light. Also, unless you are a highly paid professional or have a day job that pays extremely well, as of today, Sony is a dead end for the amateur/prosumer. Either you settle for the likes of a 200-600 for 1600£ or you sell your kidney to buy a 400 2.8 or 600 f4, there is no in between like Canon and Nikon have nor a second hand market big enough. I like my Sony, but I recognise that I have fallen victim of the hype and a marketing/influencer budget that is likely to be second to none. Well done for Sony since they are selling their cameras like cakes, but as a consumer, I'd be wary of the praises from people that are making thousands of dollars just by recommending Sony gear. Just look at well stablished wildlife professionals and they very rarely talk gear or brands, they talk photography.

    While yes the aperture is f4.5 the resulting image is similar to that of an f9 lens on full frame in BOTH depth of field and noise. So in practical terms it is an f9 lens but on paper it is f4.5.

      Too many variables. M43 outperforms many older full frame sensors and also can outperform Canon R6 sensor on highlight retention. Its not so clear cut as saying yeah double it.

    • @BlazeFirereign
      @BlazeFirereign Рік тому

      Not at all how aperture works. "Crop factor" cannot be applied to all aspects of aperture - only to depth of field.
      Take two (well-designed) lenses with the same f-stop, and the _intensity of light_ on the sensor will be the same. No matter the focal length, or the size of the sensor.
      This is an F4.5 lens. Not "on paper", but in practical terms too.
      It would be correct to say that a micro four thirds sensor is smaller, so the _total light_ on the sensor is lower, and therefore will perform worse at a given ISO. That's a property of the sensor, not of the lens.
      An F9 full-frame lens will perform _very, very differently_ (largely worse), even on a flagship body, compared to this lens.

      Of course not. Your 200-500 5.6 stays a 200-500 5.6 on a m43. But the image you get is the equivalent of a 400-1000 f 11 full frame. The m43 sensor only captures 25% of the light compared to full frame!

  • @TangerineTux
    @TangerineTux 3 роки тому +2

    Right, the crop factor doesn’t affect the f-ratio, but it does affects the effect of f-ratio on the image, just as it doesn’t change the focal length but does change the effect of focal length on the image. Exact same thing.
    It’s a 150-400mm f/4.5 lens which, when used on a Micro Four Thirds camera, produces _images_ that are equivalent to the images that a 300-800mm f/9 lens would produce on a 35mm camera at 4× the ISO setting. Of course the lens doesn’t physically become f/9 just because of the sensor behind it - but it also doesn’t become 300-800mm.

    • @billyblue689
      @billyblue689 3 роки тому +5

      In many cases when working with telephoto lenses there is too much “shallow depth of field”. It’s actually a strength of crop sensors to have a deeper depth of field with regards to these type of lenses.

    • @AndrewDaddy
      @AndrewDaddy 3 роки тому +1

      Iso doesn't scale linearly as you suggest

    • @TangerineTux
      @TangerineTux 3 роки тому

      @@billyblue689 It’s not a “strength” since you can stop down a lens with equivalent focal length on a larger sensor and get similar results.
      It’s only a strength if you care about the numbers in your EXIF data for some reason.

    • @TangerineTux
      @TangerineTux 3 роки тому +1

      Ah, but I just remembered something: it seems that some people think that smaller sensors somehow introduce more noise on their own and that the claims of equivalence would be _on top_ of that or something like that. That is *not* the case: equivalence is the _explanation_ for the difference in noise that everyone can see.
      Most of the noise in digital images is in the light itself, before the minute amount of electronic noise from the camera is added. (So it kind of irks me when people indiscriminately call it “sensor noise” - if you see it in a bright sky, for example, the noise you are seeing most likely does not come from the sensor itself.)
      The reason why 35mm images at a given f-ratio / shutter speed (/ ISO number) are less noisy than MFT images with the same settings is that they are made from more light (same intensity per area, but larger area). Using an equivalent f-ratio on the 35mm camera instead of an identical one equalizes that amount of light, and so the noise in the final image becomes similar, even if that amount of light is spread onto a larger area which is reflected in the higher ISO number.
      That 35mm cameras are somehow magically two stops “cleaner” than MFT, and that it also just so happens that they must stop down two stops to achieve the same DOF as MFT, is not a coincidence.
      But it works both ways indeed: at a given shutter speed, if you actually want higher quality on the larger format, you need to sacrifice some DOF. But if you don’t do that, it just means that you are not taking advantage of the larger sensor, not that you are at a disadvantage (except potentially in cost, size or weight).
      I hope this clears things up.

      Depth of field is a function of the focal length and aperture. If you want to take two shots on different-sized sensors _with the same field of view_ then you will need a longer focal length on the larger sensor, which results in a shallower depth of field.
      The reason people typically link this to sensor size is that focal lengths will often be considered in "full frame equivalent" terms, because it's more useful to compare the actual field of view that will be produced by the lens and sensor together. If you compare, say, 25mm on MFT to 50mm on full frame, the field of view is equivalent (ignoring the change in aspect ratio), but the full frame system will have a shallower DOF - because it's using a lens with twice the focal length.
