- This is a brand new group for us, and this is their debut song. We know they are very popular and we're a bit sad this song didn't resonate with us but it may be more that the video itself didn't resonate with us as we found it somewhat distracting. In any case, we recognize the immense talent these ladies must have, and we're very willing to take a look at something else from them, so give us something you think might hit the spot for us.

NEW JEANS are easily one of Kpop’s MOST GLOBAL hot topics/idols right now. They rose to fame fairly quick and with this song doing so.
NewJeans (NWJNS) is a five-member girl group under ADOR which is a subsidiary label of HYBE (the label BTS is under). NWJNS was formed by a former SM ENTERTAINMENT creative director by the name Min Hee Jin. She worked with SM groups like RED VELVET, F(X), EXO, GIRLS GENERATION, SHINee, and more.
NJWNS debuted on July 22nd of 2022 with their hit song/mv and fun fact, they dropped this mv out of no where. Literally, there was no promotion or word about it but as soon as it dropped they gained fame real fast. The song became viral and even reached/held number 1 and 2 spots on South Korea’s billboard and ofc the Circle Digital Chart I told yall about.
On August 1st of 2022, NewJeans released their first mini album and after this gained the title of being labeled “monster rookies” due to them succeeding charts globally and domestically.
Their fandom name is Tokki “Bunnies” btw! Their logo is related to a BUNNY and is also kinda their mascot figure if you will.

So it’s like we all have our likes and we appreciate the honesty. Only toxic fans will scrutinize u guys for not liking it as much but those of us who get it get it. Cookie is my favorite tune of theirs, but the questionable lyrics detract from the song unless I can just go on autopilot and not think about the words.

The girls are very talented, and their sound tends to be a bit more smooth and laid back than the "typical" K-Pop girl group vibe. I think its the "freshness" that has caught a lot of peoples "attention", as in simple terms its different. I would give them another chance. They have some very catchy tunes. They are not my favourites, but I can appreciate the talent and hard work the girls have gone through and are going through to this point.

Actually the fandom of this group is among one of the most diverse out there, between 14 to 60 years old by a popular south korean poll and by how much people went to their fan meetings and concerts. They are LOVED among the general public, not just a closed fandom like other groups.
New Jeans has a unique sound and approach to their songs ❤ Attention has a slight funky sound (it’s like funk with no bass) that my take on it. Dani is my bias, she has the sweetest voice and smile. I appreciate your honesty 😊. With myself, I can hate a song the first time I hear it and love it the third time I hear it (example: chill kill by red velvet) attention was like that for me. But the harmony on this song sold me ❤
The harmony is absolutely good and stood out to us on this one. We know some songs grow on you with time. We're thankful that most of our viewers want the honest opinions and not just us faking how we feel.

In Korea, this group is unrivaled in popularity.
We appreciate your HONEST reaction as a bunnie (name of their fandom) we know that they have a certain demography in mind and are considered different within K-pop it self. They have a very refreshing, natural, laid back concept which is the contrary of K-pop. Their music is usually catchy and viby which just makes it more listenable. That mixed with their Y2K and cinematography/story that most of their music videos have is really what got me into them. Their dance is also very natural. Many would say it looks like a group of girlfriends dancing together due to the vibes they portray. Their dances are not sincronizad but are very groovy and have a lot of old school moves. Newjeans is not meant to be a gourd of dancing machines but girls having fun in music and dance. That is their concept and what we like about them. They are all very young in their debut they age range was 19-14 so when you think about their age this concept is very fitting. They do not have a girl crush concept or appear to be more mature than they are.
Newjeans success was very unexpected the girls themselves have said that they were not expecting to blow up but wishing a year into their debut they have destroyed both global and local charts always being #1 in korea and globally. Their most recent EP charted #1 in the top albums under billboard surpassing the Barbie album. They have also made their US debut at lollapalooza festival in Chicago which they weren’t even a headliner however the pulled over 70,000 people just for their stage presence high was only 40 minutes. So yes they have a global fandom and their numbers just continue to rise.
Currently they are preparing for their first full length album and they have also given hint to their first tour maybe world wide or just in Asia but they have hinted towards one some estimate that it might be out by April but the date is not confirmed yet. The girl are very cute and charismatic. They are very gen z but not in a bad way I just love that they don’t have to pretend to be older than they are like most underage girls in groups are forced to act. I do recommend you guys give them another listen I recommend:

Super shy - most popular song in their get up album

They are beautiful and have great voices. I listened to their biggest hit, super shy, its ok. Is on the soft side. Some people like easy listening music, some like rock or dance. I would put them on my work playlist. Smooth, not distracting in the background so I can work.
i agree with Mrs Coach in that their target audience is early teen girls. the group has a vibe that this could be 'you and your mates at school' (if you were a 14 year old girl) like a group of amateur girls chilling and singing together and i don't mean that in a negative way. i think it's a purposeful production style that says 'we're your peers' not 'wow look at these idols'. musically this is very chill for mainstream kpop and evokes slight 60's or 70's vibes for me. i get what they're doing and i don't mind it.
as for their other songs (apart from the League Of Legends song Gods) i think the essence of who they are as a group carries over from this. 'New Jeans' & 'Super Shy' are more poppy but still have that 'we're your peers' feel. i hope they grow on you over time as they're going to be a feature of the kpop scene going forward - failing that, there are plenty of other groups old and new to fill your roster.
Agreed, there are lots of choices. We do want to hear more just in case it was only this one that didn't catch us, but we can see why people would like them.

I love the honest reaction Coach and Mrs. Coach and When I first heard this song I was not a fan of the sound. The sound is a bit more trendy with the current genartion but I must admit that they do have very catchy songs like "Super Shy" and other that I do like. I have been a kpop fan for the last 14 years and the sound has evolved and in some cases its refreshing and sometimes it's in your face. I am a fan n of NewJeans music but it did take me a bit of time to get into it. Music evolves and so does the sound that's just how music evolves. Love the honesty and the imput you guys had to say.

They are currently the most impactful kpop group in years, now you will see and see a lot of new kpop groups that debut copying or getting inspired by NewJeans music and concept because they changed the kpop industry with their fresh and unique sound.

Thank you for reacting to the best group, my favorite. They are the evolution of K-pop mixing sounds of the Jersey Club and U.K Garage, their talent is undoubted if you watch the Dance Practice videos and the "ITS LIVE" you will see that they are close to perfection! 😀
You can tell that they are teenagers having fun, in their videos and in their performances and shows, that's what makes them unique 😀
This is one of the best debut for a k pop girl group.
This song is very good actually. Love the y2k n teenage vibe.
You will end up liking them over time. The song grows on you and they do have some other really good ones. My favorite was SuperShy filmed in Lisbon.
BTW this song came out of nowhere without prior promotion or teasers and the group blew up out of nowhere in a matter of a month. Is a one in a million chance miracle.
Good honest reaction. Think about NewJeans compared to BlackPink as going from Rhianna/Beyonce to Lana del Rey. This song hit home with a lot of older people giving them Y2K nostalgia (the colors, the dress styles, the R&B/pop sounds of early girl groups), but for younger people it was bright colors and new sounds they hadn't heard in Kpop. The group’s music is a blend of classic pop and R&B with elements of UK garage and Jersey club music. My first love is Blackpink, then BTS (old BTS, like Mic Drop and On), then Stray Kids (Gods Menu). But I find myself LISTENING to more NewJeans songs than any other group, so now they are my second favorite group. I love "Attention", but most seem to prefer their next debut song "Hype Boy". Where they have trully revolutionized Kpop is their music videos "Ditto" and "OMG", which are deep explorations and commentary on the parasocial relationship between Kpop Idols and their fans. They play out like short skits from American Horror Story (but even better since the symbolism actually makes rational sense). My favorite song by them is "Cool With You" and the accompanying DANCE PRACTICE video (not the official music video as it is more of a movie and you don't see the extraordinary modern dance routine). The song and dance routine is nothing like what you have ever seen in Kpop, which can be good or bad, for me it was AWESOME. Again, Blackpink is my favorite group and will likely always be my favorite group (loved seeing them live from the front row in Houston). But, on a day in day out basis, I will listen to more NewJeans than any other artist or group.

newjeans has a different, fresh sound compare to most kpop groups that has big heavy instrumentation (not saying that one is better than the other, they are just different proposals)
Unlike IVE for example, which has a vibe of rich and inaccessible girls, I feel that newjeans have an opposite proposal, they give the impression of being accessible and unpretentious
the name newjeans refers to a combination of the new and the classic, as an old jeans

Love your honest reaction as always! I definitely think their earlier releases were tailored to the younger generation like Mrs Coach said! Since then, I think Ditto / Cool with You gave them a versatile sound and vibe. If you want something with a more upbeat beat, I think Hype Boy is the way to go! 🤍

Great first reason, i like that you’re always honest in these reactions. And not every song a group makes u will like. But doesn’t mean u don’t like the group as a whole as u said. Would be great to listen to some more of them as u will get a feel of their sound as it’s very unique.
They're teenagers, you guys probably can't relate. As someone who's as old as you, I love them. They're cute and their songs are catchy. They're at no.1 now in Korea. Blackpink 2nd.

While I'm not a fan of the group, I've noticed that what propelled them to fame is their distinctiveness from other K-pop girl groups. This uniqueness is evident in several aspects, ranging from their unconventional concept-given that most girl groups typically adopt themes like girl crush, cutesy, dark, or sexy-to their music, which incorporates a 90s musical style. Even their choreography reflects influences from 80s and 90s hip-hop styles. Essentially, they have broken away from the traditional K-pop girl group formula.
Yeah, another viewer also mentioned it and that may also explain a bit why we didn't quite feel it, as we have both long considered '90s music to be our least favorite probably of any decade. So if that's the sound they're going for, it may not resonate with us due to that.
Always love your reactions and thank you for giving new jeans a chance! I think as a long time kpop fan to me what drew me to new jeans is how different they were among all the flashy and super electronic or bass driven songs I was used to. While I enjoy that music as well it was nice to go to a more simplistic and nostalgic sound. Like I’ve heard Mrs. Coach said before listening to kpop puts you in a good mood and I’ve always like to put on new jeans whenever I’m feeling down. Especially their song super shy. In terms of recommendations I know you’re swamped right now but I suggest “Cool With You,” because I think you’ll like it at least for the cinematic music video. And “Cool With You,” has a part a and part b. I also think with new jeans the more you listen to them the more it gets stuck in your head. I catch myself even now singing attention from time to time.

The amazing girl group thats rising! The youngest girl is 15, their ages range to 15-19. You should check out their song ditto side A and B
For the debut the girls were babies. A year and half later they've literally grown up before our eyes. The music style is chill retro, they aren't trying to set the stage on fire like Blackpink.
One thing I hope you're learning is that every new group's fans say that they're going to be "the next big thing", and they all have "records" and "stats" that "prove" their point. One of the problems with Kpop is that there are so many charts and awards and sites for sales, and that leads to so many "records" because this group topped this chart, and that group set a sales record at that website, etc., so they all have their "evidence".
Now, New Jeans is very good, and they've had some real success, but for me, their sound seems like it would appeal to a select portion of the overall Kpop audience. But, I gave up trying to predict who will or won't go big because you just never know.
Great comment. Yes, we can appreciate the support people give their favorite groups. Just like Coach loves W.A.S.P. and thinks Blackie Lawless is the greatest rock/metal singer ever...but clearly the vast majority would not agree. The art appeals to each person differently.

That's the thing that I think that younger fans don't get yet - Your fave can be a great success, but only within a sub-genre', and that's fine. Also, they're yet to learn that, whether your favorite is number one or not doesn't really matter - you and I have favorites that haven't been on the charts in decades, but we still love them and listen to their music. It's not about who meets some nebulous "#1" standard, but who you like and who you'll continue to like through the years. There are thousands of one-hit-wonders or artists/groups who came out big but then faded away as quickly, and others who started slow, but are still here and going strong. Most of these fans are young and don't have that perspective yet - you might want to touch on that some time, make your channel an "educational" one. ;)
That’s fair cus a lot of kpop stans do claim their favs will be next big thing etc … but sometimes some groups really do become global and build a lot of clout for themselves. For example, ATEEZ just now gaining hype in 2023-2024 is crazy to me because they have always been good but because they are from a smaller company and stays find them being a “thr3at” towards SKZ they disregard their success. So it’s like you have to keep in mind that a lot of groups do chart faster than others and more than others but it doesn’t take away from dedicated stans who peacefully feel like their favs make really good music. I think BLACKPINK has some of the best music in kpop but they accumulated so much hate over the years there’s not one kpop stan who stans other groups that won’t say BLACKPINK’s music is “horrible” and “doesn’t deserve to chart” or they use “payola”
@@mikkj1 Very true. Great music stands the test of time, and hard to even begin counting the one hit wonders who tore up the chart for a short time and now nobody even remembers them.
New jeans are very young themselves the youngest is 15 I believe idk how old she is now and the oldest was 18 I’m sure and their demographic is younger but everyone seems to love them I love their voices so pretty and 2 of them are Australian which is cool
New Jeans debuted at a time I was still discovering a bunch of songs that I really liked, so I kind of put them on the back burner but did come around to liking them. There’s always songs that didn’t do much for me at first but click later.
They definitely had lightning in a bottle for many people who considered their unique sound to be a fresh breath into the industry.
Many times a video (even for groups I like) has distracted me to the point where either I didn’t remember the song at all or thought I didn’t care for the song only to hear it later and realize I did. Alternately, I have been meh about a song but a good performance will cement a memory that enhances the song.
Regardless, for decades I have always made sure to repeatedly expose myself to art I didn’t think I’d like to assess my feelings to understand my boundaries of what I like and make sure I wasn’t denying myself something that I would love.

@@CoachCastTV One of the great mysteries I have internally is why I can appreciate a good rap break in a melodic song like KPop often does, but if somebody puts on “Real Rap” it grates my ears horribly. Even though I have listened intentionally to songs I don’t like, I haven’t really figured out where the subconscious border is between the two. Or why I can dig old school Western, but not modern Country. The brain likes what the brain likes.
There were quite a few albums back in the day (when you couldn’t try albums before you bought them) from popular bands I liked where I had to just come to the conclusion that those songs were not very good and that was always a disappointing realization.
Same here with rap...never really been able to listen to it, other than way back with some Run DMC, which was more fun and not angst filled like a lot of the stuff now. For some reason the K-pop rap hits differently.

I was surprised you didn't like it, I found it very catchy and light. Very summery vibe to it, their really killing it recently. They did a song for league of legends that's really good, I can see them doing well in the kpop space. From what I've seen their videos don't have that blackpink vibrancy, but you know not everything is going to be for you. It is how it is, you might like other songs or not. That's okay kpop has a lot of groups to pick from, Chung Ha is has some really interesting music.

You now have reacted to all three of the "BIG 3" 4th Gen monster rookie groups (IVE, New Jeans, Le Sserafim). Appreciate your honesty. So don't worry about that. I would suggest to try "Ditto" from New Jeans next (watch both MVs, side A and B, together because of the storyline!). Its a bit different and my favorite by far.
New Jeans is without question hugely successful and the girls are very charming, hard working and talented, but their releases for me personally are a mixed bag. I especially loved "Ditto" and "OMG". I also liked "Attention" and "Hurt" in their debut lineup. Sadly what they put out in 2023 wasn't really for me (although I'm not the target audience anyways) and their debut had some controversy (surrounding their young age as minors combined with some lyrics in one of their debut songs and some marketing choices by their producer) which might have unfairly tainted my initial impression. Of course I wish them all the success in the world and love that they have their very own unique style within K-Pop staying true to their own identity. Many people connect with that and they have a big influence on K-Pop because of their somewhat different approach.
Btw. there is a great show on UA-cam called "Lee Mujin Service" where members K-Pop idols sing live in a very stripped down and raw setting. So you get a really good feel for the artist and their vocal capabilities. EP46 was with Hanni and EP75 with Danielle, both from New Jeans. I especially recommend the episode with Hanni. Of course there are a lot more great episodes with members from other K-Pop groups (I would for example point out EP26 with Rei from IVE or EP72 with Winter from aespa as two of my favs).

I just watched the Lee Mujin episode with Chaeryoung from Itzy and felt guilty I had never really appreciated her solo voice like that before.

These girls are very talented despite their young age, there is no doubt about that, but the truth is that I can't connect with their music, I'm not saying it's bad, it's just not my style.

I've listened to all their hit songs thus far and they have enjoyed great success with this concept. They are without a doubt very talented with a bit of a retro style which is fine, but to be quite honest, they haven't done anything for me to make me consider them "the next big thing" in k-pop. I agree with Mrs Coach, their music right now, is for a younger demographic between the ages of 10 - 18 . I'm waiting to hear some more new music from them to really see and hear in what direction they are going.

Despite their comeback after two years, Blackpink did not even reach the level of NewJenes' debut song. And what global record? UA-cam views? The difference in the Billboard 200 is only 2 weeks. Also, there are 0 awards for Blackpink and 9 for NewJeans at Korean awards ceremonies.(Daesang)

Keep going through their releases so you see their quick growth. Attention is their least impactful song imo but still a good debut release. Their concept initially was also that of scholars trying to have fun the way scholars do. In a non-traditional k-pop way. They're very authentic that way and unique. Especially given they are all underage. Also, their music videos are VERY cinematic. They all even have post-credit scenes. Their videos are not about being flashy but about telling a story or giving light to a topic like "fans obsession with idols".
Love watching your reactions, I definitely recommend watching "Ditto" by newjeans, it gives very sad nostalgic feel and recently won "Song of the year", love to see what you think about it.

They were extremely skinny and then bell-bottomed. In Korean K-pop, for example, extreme skinny like girl crush was popular. Young people these days have grown up only looking at the skinny pants era. But for some reason, a new style of bell-bottom pants that is strange but attractive has come out. These aren't exactly old bell-bottom pants. A style that exists somewhere between skinny pants and bell bottom pants. It will feel completely new, right? Of course, people who lived in the 1990s know this. This is retro. But for the generation that didn't live in that era, it's just completely new.
This is the girl group New Jeans.
This is the generation gap.
I am also of similar age to you. For us, this stimulates nostalgia for that era in a different way. So it covers all age groups.
This is why New Jeans is top in Korea. In Korea, the younger generation has become so accustomed to the girl crush style that they are now fed up with it. For the younger generation, this is retro, but for them, it's something completely new that they've never seen before.

I don't want to emphasize my particular tastes and preferences to others. It is completely normal and natural for people to have different tastes. However, if you focus on the 'new' part... it will become easier to understand why it is the undisputed 'top' in Korea. The journey is just beginning. Every outcome has a good reason. Of course, this is only the result within Korea. It means that they are top in Korea and Koreans understand why. Of course, people in other countries may have different opinions and that should be respected. Just like the generation gap, it varies from country to country.

I have to say when i first heard NewJeans songs i didn't get the hype either, all very calm & low key wasn't expected from a kpop group, but they convinced me especially after hearing "omg" & "ditto" more often. Now i think those are some of the best kpop releases in recent years, funny how we process music like that.

I agree with you guys. Attention is my least favourite of theirs. Good thing, this song was not my first song I heard from them. I personally like Ditto, Hype Boy, Super Shy, God, Cool with You and Hurt. Like you said, their songs may appeal to a more younger audience but I’m in my 40s and I still vibe with a lot of their songs. They are very catchy. I’m glad you’re sharing your honest opinion. Also, their youngest member is only 15 or 16 so they can’t really have any mature themes. They got criticized for Cookie because many deemed it was not appropriate for their age. One more thing. Last time I mentioned that their A/B side for Ditto and Cool with you were great…but they may confuse you. Based on your reaction to this, maybe watch their performance videos instead.
Very interesting. We're certainly able to see the talent, and just because one song doesn't catch our attention (no pun intended) we plan on doing another at some point to see if we like that better. No one can deny the work ethic of all these groups.

It's a very personal opinion, but I think the success of New Jeans's is due to the huge influence of BTS fandom. In this respect, it's the same with LE SSERAFIM.
Of course, it's definitely refreshing to see that NewJeans has brought a new genre to the KPOP industry. Even so, its popularity was very high from the start, which in turn can be explained by its fandom power. Same goes for YG's BabyMonster.
We have no doubt that company affiliation plays a role in how quickly some groups rise to popularity. Good observation.
I was never really into NewJeans to be honest.. but their collab with Riot Games on the song "Gods" was awesome and very different from their usual songs.

The only song I like from them are NEW jeans- God, New jeans OMG. I don't really watch them much or have bias in any of them but I do know they are the biggest girl group trending. They been out almost nearly 2 years now and they having breaking kpop world record right behind blackpink and some of the achievements also surpass them. I am not trying to compare, but just stating facts because they achieved famous status very fast. They also dominated the asia and south korea charts 2023 hence artist of the year 2023 and song of the year 2023. 2023 was basically their year. You don't get that biggest award by being in a big agency only. Millions of people have to buy your album also. You can say they are at the top of the most famous girl group actively.

New Jeans does have some videos where there's a plotline, mostly unnecessary, which I think its a distraction from what is very good music and vocals... There is a wonderful youtube episode of "IU's Palette" where you can get to know them more, but IU is Korea's most beloved soloist, actress and icon in Korea that maybe you should visit. She has a massive discography and diversity of styles, so you can't pigeon hole her with any one song. But check her out.
IU is on our to-do list, as we've heard that she is a must-listen.

Im more into IVE but my favourite NewJeans songs is “Hybe boy” and “OMG”
And a lot will tell you that “Ditto” is their best song but i have to warn you that Ditto is more of a soft song, not “Strong/ addictive” beat like other songs you may like, and people love it for the message, its not “bad” but personally its not my cup of tea and even borderline boring.
If you ever react to it, i hope it will be fine so you wouldn’t be disappointed, dont have huge expectations. It got song of the year award, but it doesn’t have that “Song of the year” effect when you actually listen to it.
If hope you will react to “love dive” and see why it got song of the year lol, like there is difference…
I think „Hurt“ would be more your style. It’s on the same album as Attention but it shows more of their vocals 👌🏻

I'm actually with you coach. I don't "vibe" with New Jeans and a few other Kpop groups like Dreamcatcher, or Treasure. For me it's Blackpink, Stray Kids, Twice, Le Serrafim, Aespa, and Itzy songs before and including " Loco" ( After Loco, Itzy songs haven't been as good for me ).
We all have our own taste when it comes to music, so it's OK if you don't like some of it.

Speaking of very distracting videos, Billlie’s Ring Ma Bell is one of my favorite rockier KPop songs, but the official music video has a ton of bizarre animation which people tend to fixate on.
