Then he dug through the bag w the fake ones in it and even looked at the receipt, and went as far as to ask her what color she got because the receipt didn’t say exactly what he wanted, instead of letting her surprise him. He didn’t decide gifts dont matter until he saw how bad he made her feel.

Clancy, sometimes if a mistake like this happens with the sunglasses, if you call or email customer support they’re usually really willing to work with you to get you the product that you actually want! I would give it a try!!
Hi Clancy, I have a tip for the next time. When he says he wants something - order it with him! I know you may think that's boring, but a LOT of people actually prefer it that way because, like he said, he wants what he says - not a variation of it. I know that's not how you roll, but it's his birthday and his gift so it's best if you just respect his decision instead of trying to do it in a way you'd want to recieve a gift. THEN, buy a smaller gift that he wouldn't know about - that would be a little surprise. That way he would get what he actually wanted, and you could give him a suprise aswel.. (since the secret gift is smaller - it'd be ok if it's a total fail.)

Call Oakley and tell them "I wanted a custom pair and I accidentally ordered the base model" there is NO reason they can't exchange them if they're NOT actually customized and they sell that black pair normally... One of my friends has made requests before for gifts (she always asks us if we have any wants before purchasing for us) and I'm always nervous that I may end up with the wrong thing when I try to fulfill her request. She knows I don't like buying gift cards, but sometimes I buy one from wherever she wants the gift, so she can make sure to get what she wants. To be clear she is not picky, she likes my creativity in gift giving too. She knows by the time she mentions a request, I probably already have a gift for her.

I used to do similar things for BF bday until I realized it’s not about me…it’s about them and their wants and need to feel special on their day. Trying to put the focus on what a great gift giver you are or set up a prank or huge surprise puts the attention on you versus them. It took years to learn this but I finally did and life got so much easier.

My boyfriend and I have been together almost 6 years. A few times I’ve surprised him with things like a new iPhone X, trips away, Webber BBQ, camping things, a cartoon drawing of us and our two dogs… things I know can’t go wrong and I’m 100% confident he’ll love it. If I’m 50/50 on a gift or not 100% sure what he wants, we’ll buy it together and obviously I’ll pay. He wanted a canopy that attaches off his car and I wasn’t certain on the brand or size he wanted so we bought it together and he was still super stoked. Even though it wasn’t a surprise, I love giving him a surprise and him not knowing what it is and being happy about it but sometimes it’s best to check in to make sure you get it right for them :)

I really hope Clancy sees these comments and goes to Oakley's customer service to email or call them! For reference, I use Shutterfly/Tinyprints (a CUSTOM website for putting photos on blankets, notebooks, etc) and I've talked to them about CUSTOM products I've gotten that was wrong for XYZ reason and I've gotten a refund or correct reprint so I can't imagine another store being not accomodating. PLEASE PLEASE DO THIS CLANCY ~

Do any non-Americans out there share my confusion when Americans say ‘I’m going to bake a cake’ ..... then they pull out some cake mix!!!? I’m British and it confuses me so much- ‘baking a cake’ usually means you actually get the flour, get the sugar etc!!
From scratch is more 'making a cake'. Baking is what ideally refers to box stuff. But truly, it's all semantics.
