    Practice Notes 35
    I had the great pleasure of inviting a very special guest onto this Practice Notes video. I wanted to find someone that could improvise (in the jazz idiom) on the Chopin Nocturne in E-Flat Major. His name is Mario Romano and he is one of my close friends and mentors, and a very accomplished musician. I think his musical mind is quite genius and although it took some convincing for him to play in front of the camera, we finally did it.
    *Please note that some of the labeling/analysis bits with text is not so accurate... they just represent how I was trying to understanding it while editing the footage. Also, the full track was over half an hour long and Mr. Mario requested that I do not post all of it publicly. Show him some love in the comments and I will try to bring him back for another one :)
    Hope you enjoy!

    The mixture between classical and jazz is sometimes called "third stream" and I love that sound. Too bad there isn't more music of this realm. Chopin, Satie, Liszt, Ravel etc to me is ripe with improvisational possibilities. The marriage of jazz and classical music is a beautiful thing! Great channel!!

      Adam Fager Debussy is whimsical in a way that reminds me of jazz. I'm actually a baroque Bach guy but I love Debussy.

      Adam Fager Ive heard that some harmonic jazz theory was actually first used by contemporary composers like Ravel or maybe Debussy/Gershwin. Dont quote me on that I think my teacher said something along those lines.

    First of all, this video is really, really well done. Very cool idea, beautifully performed and well edited.
    For folks who are into this type of thing, I recommend checking out a record Dick Hyman did with Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen in the 90's called "Elegies, Mostly". It contains a jazz improv on Chopin's Waltz in C# minor that is really, really awesome, as well as some other tracks in a similar style. It's not on UA-cam as far as I can tell but is REALLY worth seeking out.
    Cheers!
    Josh

    It's amazing how much of his character Mario puts across in so few words. It's like he's a personified version of the snarky yet hilarious Italian (grand)father with a little Jewish chutzpah for good measure. Very very nice video.

    As a classical pianist I've always been intrigued by the harmonic understanding of jazz pianists and to think it comes to them improvised as well. Those extended chord techniques are no joke, I fully tilt my hat to this gentleman in the video, he really started getting into the groove halfway through the vid, really amazing stuff. Its a shame the improvisational element has been lost to an extent in the classical tradition. Great analysis too nahre!

    The music makes my heart beat faster. Seeing it played makes it even more exciting for me. Snarky Puppy brought me to Rick Beato. Beato brought me to Adam Neely. Neely brought me to Ben Levin and Bent Knee. Somewhere along the path someone brought me to Brian Auger (Beato?). On to Jimmy Smith, Grant Green, Mark Lettieri, Brother Jack McDuff... and I ended up here with Nahre Sol, Mario Romano and more!
    Something happened to my mind while watching those Beato and Neely videos. It was a good thing.

      @saulguud3999 6 років тому +153

      learn all your scales and modes. and as above use them to get chords and arpeggios down. and then enjoy learning and practice, most importantly, practice when you don't feel like it. sometimes the best things happen when we are resistant to the moment because the music wants you to be its voice

    • @TheJofisean
      @TheJofisean 6 років тому +65

      Namnam54 learn a lot about how predominant-dominant-tonic motion applies to seventh chords, and get comfortable in every key. This requires a solid foundation in theory, scales, arpeggios, and most of all melody. Jazz is crazy in that it can really go anywhere any time harmonically. For example, a “C7” chord, depending on context, could be C9, Cb9, C#9, Eb/C, F#/C, any combination of those, or any number of other substitutions that I didn’t name! It’s all about freedom while staying in control

    Wow, what a player! Nahre, great and funny commentary, and it's comforting to see that a genius like you sometimes loses the thread! It's also fun hearing his old-school Italian "breaking my balls" bit - I bet you don't hear that expression in a classical conservatory too often. :)

    I was literally thinking of this idea, except for the Nocturne in Bb-minor, in more of a swing format... I had neither the skill nor patience to relearn the song in a style I was unfamiliar with... Glad to see someone also heard the potential in Chopin's music to be jazz-ified. Splendid work!

    Mr Romano strays a lot further than I might have done from the original tune - nothing wrong with this, I'm envious! I suspect that my first chords might have been Dmin7 (b5), G7 (b9, #11) Cmin (maj7) and Cmin7 instead of Eb, Bb7 (b9) Eb... I guess we all have a different approach, which is what makes life interesting!

    It's cool to see (and let) Mr. Romano try to find his way, instead of a finished performance with, perhaps, a pre-meditated arrangement. In my view, true jazz is about the journey, not the end result. Which means you sometimes hear the musician think "How about this? -Nah, let's go back and do something else."

    This has to be one of the most important videos. on all of youtube. in regards to pianist relevancy; The piano should be mastered, and if mastered with improvisation it is even more intricately beautiful to witness being played, as it is played with impossible freedom- making light of any finger laid upon the ivory.

    Ha Ha I love your sense of humour Nahre. It's nice you having a guest pianist. Wishing it was me... If I could play well...

    What is extremely impressive is that 2:53-3:03 he goes to oblivion with the harmonies but at 3:05 I was able to get back into the theme without getting lost.

    Mozart and Chopin were improvising all the time. It would be nice to hear them do it live.

      I once read that Beethoven was at his time more famous for his piano improvisations than his compositions. Anyone knows more about that?
