When I first played Kingdom Hearts as a kid, I immediately saw the Yellow Trinity in front of the block Phil tells you to push and went "Ah, I can't do this world yet" and left. I was extremely confused as I continued through the game and eventually beat it without ever unlocking the ability to do Yellow Trinities. Olympus Coliseum was like this special forbidden part of the game that refused to let me in, like my own personal Stop 'n' Swop
I feel that the "World Order" concept primarily exists to serve as characterization for Sora. The rules exist so Sora can break them. The Alice in Wonderland scene is probably the best example of it. Sora was told just moments ago not to meddle, but the moment he sees somebody in harms way, he intervenes regardless. He shows disregard for these grand rules because no rule outweighs the value of a life. Sora's attitude on this matter reflects on Donald and Goofy as well. Early on, Donald's reluctance to do anything not directly related to finding the king puts him at odds with Sora quite often. Spoilers ahead, but you see how Sora influences his new friends through his unflinching outlook on this matter- they ignore the kings orders to side with Sora over Riku, regardless of who has the keyblade. Further into Hollow Bastion, when it comes to releasing Kairi's heart, Sora is quick to sacrifice his own life for hers. While "don't die" isn't a written rule for the wielder of the keyblade, I'd argue it's implied! Sora is most concerned with doing the right thing- regardless of if he is doing it the "right way," if that makes sense.
Regarding his actions in Olympus, as another commenter pointed out, I've never seen it as meddling for him to participate in the games. As you point out, a Moogle in Traverse Town mentions the games, and as they pointed out, Leon & Yuffie later join in! Cloud is a competitor clearly not from that area, and the heartless are in the games as competitors - it appears that being from Olympus is not a pre-requisite for participation. At least that's how I've always seen it!
There's definitely an argument to be made that, since the Heartless are invading from outside, acting to counter their meddling is defending the world order. But, yeah, the practical impact of the "world order" thing is that Sora never tells anyone where he's actually from.
I gotta say, this series is really giving me a newfound appreciation for Kingdom Hearts 1. I'd kinda written it off as something you have to sit through to get to "the good part" but I'm realizing there's a lot of love and care put into this game that I initially took for granted. (Although, to be fair, I think it was mainly the endgame that made me think so lowly of kh1. But we're not there yet)
I love KH1 personally. The combat is fun if you utilize all its mechanics. Slower and heavier than later games yes, but that doesn’t equate to it being bad. For example, magic is really fun in KH1 in comparison to later games. The world design is more interesting than later games too. (good and bad admittedly.) endgame has its low points, but they landed very strong with the ending. Overall I think the game is great, and the vibes are immaculate too
Definitely check out Novayon's KH1 videos if you haven't yet. The amount of care they put into the world, enemy, and keyblade designs is remarkable. The closer you look the more you find.
This is the single best Kingdom Hearts video series ever produced-- the insights you provide on everything from stage and asset design, to script writing, to gameplay mechanics, to source material adaptation, offers so much more insight than I've ever even thought possible in commentary on this series. I hope you keep making these videos!
Nice! Colosseum was always one of my favorite worlds as a kid! It was nice and simple compared to the “mazes” that made up the other worlds. I was really bad at navigating as a kid.
Takes a lot of time to navigate places with fresh eyes. I really remember being stuck at the Boo Release room in Luigi’s Mansion cause I couldn’t notice the button on the wall. The Mickey Mouse mirror game also for Gamecube would have possibly spun your entire brain had you tried that game. Point and click like Pajama Sam was among my favorite childhood genres, eureka moments did happen or I asked for help.
You're wrong about one thing. In the Cerberus Boss Fight you can stand on his back, well his shoulders, and making sure you're locked on, attack his middle head. That's how I've beaten him every time I went through that World. By doing this strategy you dodge all his attacks. Just make sure to jump when he rears up for the earthquake slam or you'll fall off and have to wait until you can Get Up On The Cerberus Back to continue to damage him. Spoilers for a future boss fight down below. Though I will be purposefully vague for those who haven't seen it yet. Did you know when in the Dragon boss fight you can stand on the vines around the arena and lob thunder spells at it to fight at a distance.
There has been a time or two I've used Fire (at whatever level) and a particular summon against that boss you mention to stay safe in the weeds. Thunder magic may do more damage per cast, but, late game, you can cast half a dozen times as many Fire spells as Thunder spells from full MP.
Better yet - if you have enough elixirs and goofy's MP gift and enough MP you can repeatedly: Jump, Cast Stop, Jump, Cast Gravity, Jump, Cast Gravity, and then repeat until you run out of magic you can kill Dragon Maleficent without her attacking once. The reason for the jumping is because when Sora lands it cancels whatever animation he's in the middle of doing, allowing you to jump and cast another spell immediately. So really to simplify it you'd just jump for these spells: Stop, Gravity x2. The reason this works is because gravity does a percentage of the enemy's current HP. If they're frozen, their HP freezes and the damage you to do them will get "cashed in" once they unfreeze. Dragon Maleficent to my knowledge is the only boss weak to both Gravity and Stop magic though 🤷🏻♂️
When I was but a wee lad, I thought you couldnt progress through Olympus if you couldnt push the stone brick. Didn't even think about talking to Phil again. Went all the way to Ansem looking for the yellow trinity. It was only at the last save did I decide to go all the way back to Olympus and talk to Phil again.
15:26 Actually, there is a tradition in Greek Myth that Hades is the younger brother. The logic being that because all his siblings got eaten apart from Zeus and then they were regurgitated backwards they were "reborn" in a sense and thus Hades ended up becoming the youngest of the siblings with Zeus being the oldest which is used as a loose explanation as to why he's the top god despite being the technically last born child of Rhea. I'd like to think the writers did a basic study of Greek Myth knew this but I feel it's more likely they just made the assumption without thinking aside from the fact that Zeus is the top god.
Maybe a bit early but when you get to Monsto and you're supposed to find Pinccio, you can talk to Gepetto up to 4 or 5 times. Eventually he will even give you a hint how to get deeper into Monstro without getting lost.
I’ve been eagerly awaiting this one; Hercules is my favourite of the Disney renaissance films, and based on your other world breakdowns, I couldn’t wait to see you elucidate all of the little details squirrelled away in the Coliseum’s corners. This is, absolutely, my current favourite series on YT; I’m so excited to see what kinds of stuff you turn up once you get to covering the later entries in the series, especially KH2 and KH3. Thanks so much for taking the time to make and share these with us; keep ‘em coming, and I’ll keep enjoying them! :D
I read "fight to your heart's content" as more "fighting is not the same as winning", kind of like telling Hades he's just treading water rather than making real progress like Maleficent is.
Hades is arguably doing the least useful work of anybody in the villain group, so it definitely reads like Maleficent is looking down on him for screwing around with coliseum tournaments and trying to beat Hercules and not helping her and the others more.
Shocked that it was mentioned, that Hercules in this game alone is voiced by sean austin (aka samwise gamgee) in the midst of the lord of the rings trilogy. Though it might be saved for a deeper dive inot hercules himself when returning for the hercules cup.
I’m being dead serious, please see this series as far as you’re willing to go! I can’t tell you how much I love looking forward to each one. Perfect dose of nostalgia with an added edge of newfound detail - I thank you.
I allways did Olympus last, so I allways had cure for the games and I don't think I have seen Cloud almost killing Sora, that scene really gives him more character
You put so much time and effort into these that not only have I started and finished my playthrough of KH1 between traverse town and this episode. I have also finished Re:CoM and KH2. Your eye for detail is much appreciated!
about the world order stuff: i always thought that the games were a well known thing amongst people who know about other worlds, since we see other characters like leon and yuffie enter them. they never ASKED phil what the games were, after all, he just started telling them. that being said i def agree that they really don’t follow the world order rule lol
You mentioned how you can press Triangle/Y to order your companions to attack your focused target. But if you don't have focused anything they actually come running towards Sora, not attacking anything in the meantime. Preventing your companions from doing anything is obviously only very rarely useful, but it is an option if you just spam triangle while NOT using lock-on.
Something I always found interesting about Hercules in this game is his voice actor being Sean Astin, presumably due to Tate Donovan not being available to reprise the role (at least in this game), which might be the only example in KH or really any Disney project where the replacement VA is arguably a bigger name than the original.
@ if i’m not mistaken KH1 was the first time Sephiroth ever had an English voice actor so Lance Bass technically IS his original (English) voice, though it is also interesting how Square/Disney actually shelled out for recognisable celebrities to voice most of the FF characters in KH1 when they could easily have just gone with a more typical anime dub cast.
About the scene with Hades and Maleficent: I always felt like this scene was awkward, that he was overreacting to what she said. After playing the game several times and thinking about it a lot, the best explanation I could come up with was that she was treating him as childish for "fight[ing] to your hearts content" over his silly little personal grievance while she and the others focused on the big-picture goal of acquiring the Pricnesses of Heart. He understood her meaning as diminutive toward him, and that's why he got pissed. The heart thing is...an interesting idea. Not sure I really follow it, but I'm interested in hearing more about the idea. Also, I'm guessing Sora heard Hades when he released Cerberus when he said "Accidents happen" and pieced it together. Sora in KH1 is generally more clever and puts things together more quickly than in later KH games, as well. Just my thought. Also, someone suggested Cloud didn't use dark powers, but his moves sure look like black energy is involved to me. Anyway, I LOVE this series more than i can express, and I'm so grateful you're doing it. You're criminally under-subbed, and I hope it changes sooner than later. Also I love your sense of humor; it was totally on point in this one!
The two Rule 8s do sound pretty similar in theme, so maybe it was a translation change from English to Japanese back to English. In-game, maybe Phil decided to just simplify the rule.
The entire first game is about breaking rules and how rules are sometimes arbitrary. Like most of Phils Rules for the Cups are just made up none sense. Sora looked at the "rules" and disagreed with them. Sora is actively not trying to uphold the rule in any regard. They only mention the rule so you know Sora is willingly breaking it everytime he helps. I'm not sure why the Fandom thinks it actually mattered in a way that was critical to the plot when they explicitly showcase the rule is dumb and is actively letting innocents get harmed. King Triton was the final example of why the meddling rule doesn't make sense. If Triton left Sora alone he would've sealed the Keyhole without any trouble. But because he was "Protecting his world" by upholding "The rules" he actually almost destroyed his own world. I have no idea why people think the rule actually mattered. In KH2 he just tells them the answer to their questions and lets them try to sort out the information themselves. In KH1 they're still not sure how to handle traveling across worlds. In KH2 he's a lot more direct about his mission.
I loved the Mario Sunshine videos, I've been loving the KH videos, and you also spent the first couple minutes ranting about Greek Mythology?? I think we're just the same person Phoenix. So excited about the new video today!
Correction: The coliseum does appear in the movie. It's where Hercules meets Hades for the first time, where he and Phil have their falling out, where Hercules gives up his powers in exchange for Meg, and where he found out that Meg had been working for Hades the whole time. It's actually quite the significant location in the movie given that it was the location where shit actually was starting to get real. Now granted, I have no idea why Square made the implication that it was located somewhere on Mt. Olympus, but given that Thebes is right outside the coliseum entrance, and the coliseum itself doesn't make an appearance in Kingdom Hearts III, I like to think that the coliseum was destroyed during the Titanomachy in that game since the entire city was literally up in flames during this time.
Yesss!!! Your videos are the best! Always love the dalmatian puppy updates! And looove Rhapsody in Blue from Fantasia 2000 too! It was essential info for the video 💙
This video came at a great time. One of my favorite Disney movies and my favorite game series. Had a rough day at work today so this was a great wind down.
The Cerberus fight is so incredibly nostalgic for me. Brings me back to the original commercial, showing Sora confronting the good boy. I can feel a little bit of that magic still just reminiscing. This game truly helped define part of my childhood. In 2002, I was 11, just got my first PS2 for Christmas. Begging my parents to take me to Walmart to get Kingdom Hearts with my Christmas money. My dad was so annoyed 😅 but he still gladly took me. If only I knew back then how impactful this series would be. The next 4 years after that, I had a handful of friends die, and I started going through a major depression. This game and its many positive messages truly helped me through. Even just yearning for Kingdom Hearts 2. The story helps express emotions I don’t know how to put to words. And ignites some feelings that have no words.
Another thing as well, when you utilize the triangle button to make Doorknob and Gawrsh do something, their portraits will flash and you won't be able to do it again until it stops flashing. Essentially that acts as the cooldown for that. Also Geronimo can do crazy damage if you set his shield attack move to always. Stickman sham calls it "Gawrsh Arcanum"
im loving these videos! even already knowing a lot of this stuff, i love the way you present everything, and i still end up learning a few new things every time!!
You can parry Cloud's Sonic Blade making him open for roughly one air combo before backing out. That's how I usually beat him. His Sonic Blade is basically free damage if you're good at parrying.
New upload les go. Im not into kingdom hearts at all (found you bc of the sly game breakdowns) but man your videos are so intertaining I'm sticking around
I’m taking this from Sarcastic Productions but in a episode going over Hades Red mentioned that Cerberus roughly translates to Spot so flame head is a total Dork
21:00 It also forces them to use MP costing abilities/spells. Its why Goofy with only tornado equipped is so ridiculously strong since you can just force him to spam it.
KH3 not having a true coliseum equivalent will forever make sad. I'm glad Olympus was a fun world since it was the first time seeing it so open after being stuck in the underworld and all in KH2 but...man...it would've been so cool.
Game Breakdown: truly "appointment UA-cam". Standout parts of this video: - No idea that Sora has two barrel-stacking animations. - The correspondence of the message of Disney's Hercules with KH's thesis statement. - The matching footage of the victory poses! Two thoughts: - Let's give Donald and Goofy some credit: this is the only game of the numbered titles that doesn't cheat by reducing the partners' damage output to 1 in every boss encounter, which really does reduce them to targets for the boss AI and extra item pockets to fuel Sora. In KH2 and 3, there is literally no way to improve your party members' performance against bosses. KH1 properly balances the fights with the presumption that Donald and Goofy are dealing the damage they're mathematically supposed to be doing, AND Donald casts exactly the same leveled-up magic as Sora, whereas KH2 and KH3 undermine the core idea that "my friends are my power" in every boss fight. - The note that Sora impossibly intuits Cloud's collusion with Hades shines a light on the weak writing of Cloud's subplot in general: What do Sora and Cloud mean by 'dark powers'? Cloud doesn't use the power of darkness at all. Moreover, the conversation with Hades just implies that Cloud has to beat SDG, but the cutscene where Cloud wins implies that Cloud is going to KILL Sora after Sora collapses in defeat, a totally unmotivated action. This world needed another editing cycle.
You could argue some dark powers being used by Cloud. The particle effects that surround Sonic Blade and Climhazard are on the darker end of the spectrum, being blue and purple rather than red and white that is often used for Light. He also can sprout a wing and fly around for a short while, similar to Sephiroth, and also Genesis and Angeal. And since KH uses Sephiroth as a personification as Cloud's darkness, I feel this similarity was intentionally chosen to illustrate the darkness Cloud both harbours and uses. You could also simply argue superficial aspects as being signs of him using darkness. The clothing, the bandage on the sword, the cold, almost cruel way he approached situations. In the scene where Cloud is a victor he calm and steadily walks up, ready to end Sora. Plus the stoic cold voice. It's a far cry from how Cloud was depicted in FF7, who was more energetic, prone to both anger and compassion. Just as willing to tell a joke as he was to tell someone to eff off.
1: Cait Sith is a scottish demon so it's pronounced more like "Ket Shee" (think of a banshee) 2. Sora's third one is a reference to Zidane. Not only does it look the closest but they were all references to protagonists, since Sora is the protagonist of this game.
Great work! Really loving this series so far. Excited for the journey through this game to continue. Something that I think will make for a good inclusion in a future video: beyond a couple keyblades that are references to final fantasy weapons or other things from final fantasy, there are also shields and staves that are weapons from final fantasy. I imagine you already know that, and that you're saving that for later, so as to not interrupt the flow every time a new weapon is available, and it's probably more well suited for some sort of trivia section at the end of the video series, but I thought I'd mention it just in case. I wouldn't personally consider these weapon names to be spoilers, but will still hide it in case anyone else does. (not an exhaustive list, just a couple examples, though there are only a few more in this game, and some of them aren't direct references to weapons, but are still likely references to FF) . . . . . . . . . . . - Morning Star, which is just a real type of weapon in real life, but as a recurring weapon in the Final Fantasy series, the reference was probably intentional - Defender, which in Final Fantasy is usually a sword that has *something* to do with defense, like casting Protect when used as an item, or being a weapon that also boosts your defense stat. In KH it's of course a shield, and the more obvious piece of trivia is that it's the shield of the Defender heartless from later in the game. - Save the Queen, one of Donald's staves, is a reference to the recurring weapon of the same name, which is *usually* a sword (or a knight sword, in games where that's a different category of weapon), and is associated with knights in some way in a lot of the games, though in Final Fantasy VIII it's actually one of Quistis's whips. Goofy has an equivalent shield called Save the King, which doesn't exist in FF, but is clearly meant as a counterpart to Save the Queen, so it's sort of just the same reference but modified
when the time said 40 min i thought you were coverin all olympus, but you did jus the first visit while squeezin a bunch o info. i really enjoy how you cover these maps.
10:36 I'm willing to bet that the double-barrel thing, and the invisible wall, were both solutions for the exact same problem. Maybe made at the same time! A programmer could have seen it be possible so they made the walls, then another programmer said "why not just not let the player stand on two barrels?" and put that in. Who knows?
I always end up doing Deep Jungle 1st only grabbing thunder before dipping for 2 worlds so I've never had issues beating Cloud you usually have an extra 2-3 levels and more importantly cure. It's interesting to see someone not do it that way makes him much more trouble.
Maybe it's just me, but I always interpreted Hercules' line on wearing Cerberus down to be true based on the fact that the rematch you have is with him in the Hades Cup gives him higher stats. The game seems to want you to complete the first visit during the first ring of worlds, which would be before rescuing Kairi, and Cerberus has two stat spreads before and after. You could arguably fight the same version of Cerberus twice, but it seems more intentional you fight the weaker version, then fight the higher statted version in the Hades Cup later in the game. Hercules could also probably have taken Cerberus on just fine if he didn't have Cloud with him, seeing as he's not a big obstacle in the movie and Cerberus is also unable to throw barrels.
3:01 I never knew they at least gave the area out there some consideration as early as KH1. I believe KH2 literally just sticks the entrance to the underworld either inside or outside the doorway which I always found silly. But only until BBS do they give it a small area that leads to Thebes. Which makes me a little disappointed that we couldn't at least visit the colosseum in KH3 considering it was that close to the town the whole time.
about Cerberus' tail - it seems that this specific Cerb is based on a Doberman breed, which often get their ears and tail clipped for this signature look. if neither of those are clipped, the ears go floppy, and the tail is long and slick due to breed being short-haired - exactly like this one. looks like Hades decided to keep the ferocious look in the front, but slacked in the back xD
As a kid I would always lose the fight with Cloud and struggle with Cerberus but now that I'm an adult going through KH1 on the switch I've thus far kicked their asses the first time around. I've come so far.
I think his reaction to the "Fight to your heart's content" is more about her demeaning his efforts. Obviously you would not say "Fight to your heart's content" to someone you thought would win. But the heart theory is definitely interesting, I absolutely love how KH1 puts the classic villains in the actual antagonist role, something later games got away from too much, imo.
Hmm... Just looked at original Japanese version, and there Maleficent says, "好きなようにおし。勝てるまで続けたらいいさ。", Suki na yōni oshi. Kateru made tsudzuke tara ii sa(Do as you like. Just keep going until you win.), which does seem to suggest that she knows Hades is not gonna win or at least it's gonna take a very long time.
Sora wanted to prove he was a hero to a condescending stranger. I don't think it would be meddling if Phil was using heartless as his contestants. In KH2, there was an audience in the collisseum even though we never got to see a render of them. I think the same can be said about the audience in KH1. So Phil is the meddler here. And Hercules is a Disney movie, so it was made for English-speakers even though it was set in Greece. Phil's joke literally is that it's never 2 words.
Love the video but goddamn Square really fucked up the textures with the AI upscale update that released concurrently with the Steam release. I much prefer the ones from the original HD releases over those smudgy messes (most noticeable when looking at... well anything I guess but wall-textures and text especially). I do believe there's a mod to replace the original PC textures on Nexus, thank god(s).
I think the hindquarters look more cat-like because of the shape of the tail rather than its length; dogs dont really hold their tails in that curly fashion. The legend holds that cerberus has a serpent for a tail due to being the progeny of many other snake-headed beings, which is my best guess for why they made it look like that. They either forgot or didn't have time to actually add a head, or perhaps it was even something that ran afoul with Disney and its established character design for the dog, which doesn't really show its tail all that prominently.
Isn't it confirmed that Dooble and Goofer are looking for Hades in the KH4 trailer? Maybe we'll get more insight into him in the kingdom hearts universe
SPOILERS FOR FUTURE PARTS OF KINGDOM HEARTS 1: An interesting element of Kingdom Hearts 1 is that several worlds are optional, and the order especially is, and cutscenes are changed or removed to account for what players have or haven’t completed. Olympus Coliseum has the first such cutscene. If, for some reason, you don’t complete Olympus Coliseum’s story before defeating Maleficent at Hollow Bastion, the final cutscene with Hades cuts off the ending when Maleficent appears.
Very interested to get to deep jungle to see how the "it's fairly intuitive when the expected move is to turn backwards" stands from there. When I played kh1 for the first time earlier this year I kept getting confused on where to go and checking guides.
Wait… opening the journal was what breaks Phil’s first scene? Huh. I’ve had it happen to me a few times and thought I was playing for too long or something On that topic, Halloween Town has a moment where this can happen too. Wonder what causes it there…
maybe someone has already commented this but the whole "no meddling" thing that preceeds the trio goofing around and meddling to hell; i think its a Star Trek reference lol. the first rule of star fleet (the Prime Directive!) is "No interference", 'a guiding principle of Starfleet that prohibits its members from interfering with the natural development of alien civilizations.' to quote wikipedia. Often Kirk would be reminded of this right before inciting a revolution/falling in love with an alien queen/they get trapped in a cowboy time loop/infiltrating a nazi planet lol nomura is a classic fantasy/scifi guy and all his games are loaded with homages (so much of later kh is his thoughts on the star wars prequel trilogy....) so i genuinely lean on this lol. but here is this thing: in the kh trio, who is the Kirk, the Spock and the Bones?
I love all the names for Dolan and Gooby I mean Gonald and Doofy I mean Doggle and Goosey I mean Daffy and Scooby McDonalds and Gucci Donphan and Grookey Defoko and GUMI
I'm pretty sure the "world order" thing is mostly an excuse to not have scenarios where characters from different Disney series can interact with each other, since Disney was very strict on that.
You may say this elswhere, but literally the only point of the world order thing is to defend the writing from explaining why Aladdin, Hercules, etc, so on wouldn't follow Sora and why most disney villains don't all jump Sora the second he arrives in Wonderland. The concept has massively diminishibg returns and, given the statements recently about wanting to soft reboot the series, they could have done better for sure.
There's definitely an argument to be made that, since the Heartless are invading from outside, acting to counter their meddling is defending the world order.
But, yeah, the practical impact of the "world order" thing is that Sora never tells anyone where he's actually from.
Perfectly put!

What about the endgame is it you don't like? A lot of peoples' favorite part of Kingdom Hearts 1 is Hollow Bastion which happens around the endgame
@@Kalernor I mean like the very very endgame. I got so stuck there I ended up putting the game down for like a year
Definitely check out Novayon's KH1 videos if you haven't yet. The amount of care they put into the world, enemy, and keyblade designs is remarkable. The closer you look the more you find.

There has been a time or two I've used Fire (at whatever level) and a particular summon against that boss you mention to stay safe in the weeds.
Thunder magic may do more damage per cast, but, late game, you can cast half a dozen times as many Fire spells as Thunder spells from full MP.
This, I also remember climbing and hacking multiple times back when I was a kid XD
24:05 The strongest magic user in all of the Square-verse is doing the same arm crossing animation as Tidus.
Oh, and Bahamut too!
You are way too underated for the great videos you post. This is coming from both this seiries and sunshine too
I read "fight to your heart's content" as more "fighting is not the same as winning", kind of like telling Hades he's just treading water rather than making real progress like Maleficent is.
OMG I HEAR IT
I’m being dead serious, please see this series as far as you’re willing to go!
Dude, I marathoned all of your other KH videos. These are great! Keep it up!
i appreciate the use of kid icarus uprising music
Something I always found interesting about Hercules in this game is his voice actor being Sean Astin, presumably due to Tate Donovan not being available to reprise the role (at least in this game), which might be the only example in KH or really any Disney project where the replacement VA is arguably a bigger name than the original.
Would Sephiroth being voiced by Lance Bass of all people in KH1 count too?
@ if i’m not mistaken KH1 was the first time Sephiroth ever had an English voice actor so Lance Bass technically IS his original (English) voice, though it is also interesting how Square/Disney actually shelled out for recognisable celebrities to voice most of the FF characters in KH1 when they could easily have just gone with a more typical anime dub cast.
About the scene with Hades and Maleficent:
I always felt like this scene was awkward, that he was overreacting to what she said.
The original rule 8 was a TV show exclusive one that showed up after over 100 episodes so I kinda doubt it the kh devs knew there was a og rule 8
I don't know...the way that the two rules seem to basically cover the same topic makes me wonder if it was a translation mix-up of some kind.
18:59 - that is the cutest scream ever.
Get up on the Hydra's back
Another banger KH video. Such a treat to watch each episode of this series as they come, great breakdown man!
im loving these videos! even already knowing a lot of this stuff, i love the way you present everything, and i still end up learning a few new things every time!!
You can parry Cloud's Sonic Blade making him open for roughly one air combo before backing out. That's how I usually beat him. His Sonic Blade is basically free damage if you're good at parrying.
I absolutely love thr series. You've convinced me to esentially play along as these videos come out.
The joy I felt seeing this pop up in my feed.
I'm like an addict in between these vids man, fiending for a fix.
New upload les go. Im not into kingdom hearts at all (found you bc of the sly game breakdowns) but man your videos are so intertaining I'm sticking around
These are so good at helping me appreciate design details that I would never consider.
I love the kid Icarus music in the bg this episode, very good music taste wise and thematically wise!
I’m taking this from Sarcastic Productions but in a episode going over Hades Red mentioned that Cerberus roughly translates to Spot so flame head is a total Dork
21:00
It also forces them to use MP costing abilities/spells.
Standout parts of this video:
- No idea that Sora has two barrel-stacking animations.
- The correspondence of the message of Disney's Hercules with KH's thesis statement.
- The matching footage of the victory poses!
Two thoughts:
- Let's give Donald and Goofy some credit: this is the only game of the numbered titles that doesn't cheat by reducing the partners' damage output to 1 in every boss encounter, which really does reduce them to targets for the boss AI and extra item pockets to fuel Sora.
Just as willing to tell a joke as he was to tell someone to eff off.
very excited for deep jungle breakdown, thank you!
Lets go!, I was hooked on this series of videos I hope he keeps on making these.
I am LOVING these videos!! so excited for the rest of the worlds & hopefully kingdom hearts 2!!! :D
1: Cait Sith is a scottish demon so it's pronounced more like "Ket Shee" (think of a banshee)
2. Sora's third one is a reference to Zidane. Not only does it look the closest but they were all references to protagonists, since Sora is the protagonist of this game.
GET UP ON THE HYDRA'S BACK!
(not an exhaustive list, just a couple examples, though there are only a few more in this game, and some of them aren't direct references to weapons, but are still likely references to FF)

- Morning Star, which is just a real type of weapon in real life, but as a recurring weapon in the Final Fantasy series, the reference was probably intentional
- Defender, which in Final Fantasy is usually a sword that has *something* to do with defense, like casting Protect when used as an item, or being a weapon that also boosts your defense stat.
It only came out after KH but Save The Queen is also an Emblem in FF13 used by Snow.
when the time said 40 min i thought you were coverin all olympus, but you did jus the first visit while squeezin a bunch o info. i really enjoy how you cover these maps.

Oh, the irony. 😁
that sword really is a lightning rod

I'm willing to bet that the double-barrel thing, and the invisible wall, were both solutions for the exact same problem. Maybe made at the same time! A programmer could have seen it be possible so they made the walls, then another programmer said "why not just not let the player stand on two barrels?" and put that in. Who knows?
Omg the art once again is amazing!!!!!!!!
Love this series excited to see more!!
loving this series!

"this symbol is on Merlin's door" *points to symbol that is roughly the same shape but not the same*
Can't say I know any of these english voice actors, but it's good to see that they are having good performances in that language too.
Yipeee! Was eagerly waiting for the new installment :D
These videos are the work of a hero
Oh man, what it takes to be a true hero, the kingdom hearts 3 ending, the feels
I gotta spruce this place up for the gAAAAAAAAAAmesss
about Cerberus' tail - it seems that this specific Cerb is based on a Doberman breed, which often get their ears and tail clipped for this signature look. if neither of those are clipped, the ears go floppy, and the tail is long and slick due to breed being short-haired - exactly like this one. looks like Hades decided to keep the ferocious look in the front, but slacked in the back xD
I have fond memories of the Herc animated series. Like Aphrodite's theme music!
As a kid I would always lose the fight with Cloud and struggle with Cerberus but now that I'm an adult going through KH1 on the switch I've thus far kicked their asses the first time around. I've come so far.
May I ask why you bought the cloud versions out of literally any other way to play this game?
I think his reaction to the "Fight to your heart's content" is more about her demeaning his efforts. Obviously you would not say "Fight to your heart's content" to someone you thought would win. But the heart theory is definitely interesting, I absolutely love how KH1 puts the classic villains in the actual antagonist role, something later games got away from too much, imo.
I always took it as a subtle threat - that indulging his passions would leave him vulnerable to the Heartless...
PEAK JUST DROPPED
I always visited Deep Jungle after Wonderland, so I was leveled up enough to never lose to Cloud, I didn't know that you could do that.
Also I hope for Deep Jungle you show the full Jungle Slider minigame and all the paths.
good timing!
Yippie I've been looking forward to this!!!
And thank you for covering the Gummi missions! They're so cool :D
Thank you for pronouncing Cait Sith correctly
Aw yeah, I've been waitin' for this
I think the hindquarters look more cat-like because of the shape of the tail rather than its length; dogs dont really hold their tails in that curly fashion.
Thank you!!
Isn't it confirmed that Dooble and Goofer are looking for Hades in the KH4 trailer? Maybe we'll get more insight into him in the kingdom hearts universe
SPOILERS FOR FUTURE PARTS OF KINGDOM HEARTS 1:
An interesting element of Kingdom Hearts 1 is that several worlds are optional, and the order especially is, and cutscenes are changed or removed to account for what players have or haven’t completed. Olympus Coliseum has the first such cutscene. If, for some reason, you don’t complete Olympus Coliseum’s story before defeating Maleficent at Hollow Bastion, the final cutscene with Hades cuts off the ending when Maleficent appears.
6:07 CENSTHRED?
"Get up on Cereberus' back!"
The coliseum with open seats is used in multiple fights, including ones you can repeat
Yeah but the barrel section was the most peaceful time to really look at it
Im sure you didnt mention it due to spoilers, but the Cutscene where Maleficent shows up does change based on where in the story you see it
Rest assured this’ll get a note when the time comes!
@@2CPhoenix Had a feeling, just double checking! Love the videos, legit some of the highest quality and best made deep dive videos on UA-cam
Huh. I’ve had it happen to me a few times and thought I was playing for too long or something
On that topic, Halloween Town has a moment where this can happen too.
Often Kirk would be reminded of this right before inciting a revolution/falling in love with an alien queen/they get trapped in a cowboy time loop/infiltrating a nazi planet lol
nomura is a classic fantasy/scifi guy and all his games are loaded with homages (so much of later kh is his thoughts on the star wars prequel trilogy....) so i genuinely lean on this lol. but here is this thing: in the kh trio, who is the Kirk, the Spock and the Bones?
question will you do worlds of other kingdom hearts game just wondering
I love all the names for Dolan and Gooby
I mean Gonald and Doofy
I mean Doggle and Goosey
I mean Daffy and Scooby

Defoko and GUMI
I'm pretty sure the "world order" thing is mostly an excuse to not have scenarios where characters from different Disney series can interact with each other, since Disney was very strict on that.
Is Goofy's jumping victory a reference to anything?
The most important rule in the gaaaaames is to have fun and be yourself.
Good stuff, 2C
