I'm a veteran and absolutely love this movie. I understand what you were going for here. I don't think the lighting needed any changing, but making the audio more realistic is definitely an improvement. I'm glad to see there's someone who loves this movie as much as I do. Good job.
An epic war movie as cross of iron is should be restored so many generations to come can see the raw reality of war. Evendough it’s destructiveness it has a beauty in it, the friendship between the soldiers, the surreal landscape and the slowmo scenes are amazing to watch.
could be the best war movie ever , no Hollywood BS . Just the horror of war with a super cast .It is sad they ran out of money and had to change the ending and improvise the last part of the film .
I'm really impressed with what you've done with the sound. Personally, I'm not keen on the "look". It's a bit too dark for me, but it's a personal thing. Thank you for uploading and sharing.
Peckinpah was a total perfectionist! The new pictures are way too dark and have lost the DOP style. The only improvement is the Machine gun sound. The mortors on the original are way better. Nice idea but Peckinpah would probably have shot the colourist😀
I completely agree! Way,way too dark! I would suggest shipping the colorist to siberia and Stefan too. The MG sound and the explosions are far better and more realistic but the rest is B A D bad!
I like the improvements. This is a war movie way ahead of it's time except the sound technology is not. Back in the 70's all gunfire sounded like spaghetti western gunfire. The new sound completes the cinematic brilliance.
Richardsen I'm did it in awareness of the season, winter or spring, rainy season and cloudy so not full on sunlight. So the tint is for the weather effect
As others have mentioned it: The modern sound is awesome... closer to the MG3 I shot in the German Bundeswehr (although the MG3 has lower cadence aka less RPM) Great job! Well done! It is too dark! 😉
Good machine-gun sound but the restoration a little dark and came close to turning it into a sepia or even black and white film. Impressive effort though.
I remember when I was fifteen on about 1982 and VHS recorders were still a luxury item, at least here in Finland. Even CD players cost about 2000 euros ($2200), discounted to today's money. Some specialized stores were selling films on prerecorded VHS tapes and this film was one that I recall. They must have been super expensive at the time, even blank tapes cost a small fortune.
Don't you think Peckinpah would have done it even better if he would have made that film in 2021? Ofcourse you can remaster a film made in 1977,even if it was made by Peckinpah. Better tools, better product.
Well i think it looks very 4kish. A little dark but very distinct and sharp. There is better depth as a result. This is my favorite movie i must have watched nearly a 1000 times.
Certainly gave the sound much more depth & made the MG42 sound more realistic to German standards. Easily the best War film ever made, it deserves to be re-mastered.
This is a fun idea but there's really no need for this. It's a pretty perfect movie and some stuff, like the added vertical camera shake on the explosions isn't an improvement, it just makes it look like a low budget TV movie. A more interesting thing might be to take the Blu ray version and try to make the colours more like the older classic DVD, as they washed them out a bit, although the film still looks fantastic.
Indeed, a great movie. I think the intro is one of the greatest ever! Hänchen klein, that song combined with those pictures! By the way, in the video version there are a lot of very bad cuts made in the scene before the tank battle starts, when Steiner releases the Russian boy... That had to be fixed. Oh yeah, and of course the language. Germans speak, uhm, German. Even in The Longest day Germans spoke their own language.
Much improved sound (MG42 machine gun sounds like the buzz saw it was, along with the slight clink of brass piling up). Visually, not so much. I'm sure in the bunker candlelight will only show so much, but above ground, far too dark. Nevertheless, Great job! Thanks for paying any attention to this often ignored film. Subscribed!
This "restoration" overall is NOT an improvement because the image has been darkened. The sound is improved but the colors and lighting are better on the original.
Solid Tube Audio true in that regarding the picture. It's Russia and partly winter time though. Yes, light has to be brighter but the color suggests rainy ugly weather. Redid things since and added more light 😁
Pretty good, especially the new sound effect's. The only thing that I don't like is the camera "constantly" moving and with the zoom in and out, feels confusing and uneccesary.
Solid Beard thanks. Some shakiness is the actual film. The zooming is supposed to reflect an amateur camera man who is "caught in the moment ", I have since re edited and taken out some of the zooming
@@MultiMihaescu I tend to think the "hand held" effect is a bit overused these days. It works in certain situations, but not others. For example, it works well in an action scene with lots of movement in all directions, but in a scene where two characters are just standing still and talking, I think the original steady shots are much better. In a still scene like that, a constantly moving camera gives the impression of the cameraman urgently needing to pee.
Great piece of work especially liked the MG 42 sound, heard a lot of veterans speak of it's distinctive sound which your piece matches in my mind anyway have you or do you have any plans to re-do whole film? such a cult classic
You’ve made a dogs dinner of this. How was this rewarding? You’ve screwed Pekinpah’s vision and turned it into a sepia muddy mess. Sound is an improvement in every aspect
Don Novicki honestly once I do finish I can’t really post it because I have no rights to it. It’s more for me to have a guys movie night. Hopefully I can upload it on UA-cam
@@MultiMihaescu So fellow namesake, do tell if there is anyway that you have this on download somewhere? I'll pay, I don't care. I'm from Serbia btw and I'm impressed how our actor ( the little Russian prisoner - Славко Штимац ) fits well in this restored version. 🙂 And yes, Stefan so sieht aus, wenn er in Kyrillisch geschrieben wird. 😉 Kind regards.
Nah Peckinpah version is better. Soldiers are monochromatic after being in the dirt. Battlefields can be fog filled , rain sun , whatever .. hence the effects Sam was filming. This movie needs no help. Would you redo Mona Lisa ?
It seems to me that you removed a lot of the haze and tweaked the contrast, mid tones and blacks but should have lightened up the shadows a little bit after the aforementioned tweaks that you did...otherwise, you did an good job.
I think you pushed the restoration too far. You have lost the information in the shadows when you increased the contrast. You also lost those wonderful blue forest highlights where it was dappled with sunlight and haze. you sacrificed the atmosphere.
1977 is not old and the quality of films did not change all that much. Actually 70mm film has resolution surpassing most of digital cameras. As for your “improvement”, you seem to miss the point that the fog in the opening sequence was intentional. Stopped watching after 1:30 mark.
No I’m not impressed…. There’s a reason why classics have that 70’s emotion to it - IN FILM. Digitally remastering them KILLS it’s origins. Best left alone.
You darkened the footage too much and your camera zooms are rough. If you want that zoom flow, slow the zoom down and have the zooms start and end at each cut. Also I'd leave the movie as it was, a time moment in time from when it was made in the 70's
D.O. F.T no honestly, they’re a mix between various explosions and effects out of different movies for one... someone compiled the saving private Ryan explosions and I was able to take the sounds and mix them with other explosions to make them pop more.
Ah ok, thank you anyways. I make stop motion animations on my other channel, Mickamations, in case you were wondering why I was so curious about these sound effects.
HeilZorak64 there’s a noticeable shake when an explosion occurs. I exaggerated a bit so will pull back a bit so it’s not that strong. But yeah. Actually the read explosions in saving private Ryan look shaky is a mix of both the tremors and the fact they removed the filter from the camera so the explosions don’t look soft.
I know it is. I have the original. This is just for fun to mess around a bit. Fun to see the difference before and after. I’ve actually done the whole film and cut out tons of the effects after doing this one. Speaking of original, there’s tons of stuff that sadly got tossed out. The romance with Eva, etc
I'm a veteran and absolutely love this movie. I understand what you were going for here. I don't think the lighting needed any changing, but making the audio more realistic is definitely an improvement. I'm glad to see there's someone who loves this movie as much as I do. Good job.

The Before looks much clearer and better. The After is too dark and rough.

I’ve watched this film many times on a barracks day room VCR and TV and I guess that’s how I like it best.
Wow amazing work on my favourite war film
Apollogamer truly as you said, favorite war film. Too bad it's a maze to go through to get them to publish it in this quality.
I like the improvements. This is a war movie way ahead of it's time except the sound technology is not. Back in the 70's all gunfire sounded like spaghetti western gunfire. The new sound completes the cinematic brilliance.
Jack Sparrow thank you I appreciate that
I like the new sounds; I am not convinced on the darker image, though. I think the original is better, although in the need of more deinition.
Richardsen I'm did it in awareness of the season, winter or spring, rainy season and cloudy so not full on sunlight. So the tint is for the weather effect
@@MultiMihaescu Ah, makes that sense when you put it that way. Thank you very much for taking the time to explain.
Great 👍 work to a truly classic movie 🎥

wow the after is way to dark.
The film was that good it looks and sounds great in any format
well said
A great movie. It still stands up well.
an amazing piece work thank you so much
I consider this movie a masterpiece. I have seen it a lot if times!
This movie WAS restored. To coincide with the Blu-ray release, it was restored and shown in theaters at that time.

No real point on trying to remaster perfection, albeit the weapons sounds are far more realistic

Good work - the original was the most epic war film ever made, truely shocking and realistic. K
I don't understand why you made it shakier or darker. The sound effects are good though.
Because the darker makes it look like a colorized photo from ww2
Where i download this?

That MG 42 sound!!!
Awesome movie
Ide love to watch your fully resored version! Is it possible???
How does this compare to the Blue Ray version I have seen on Amazon?
Restoration failed a lot - a big mistake.
Peckinpah was a brilliant director and I cannot see much of an improvement.
a little dark...good sound of the machine gun realistic....thanks

sorry .. but it was one of the best films ever made already.. and exact sound quality does not really significantly improve that at all..
Still masterpiece
Was a bit dark in some shots. This and Lawrence of Arabia have always

IF ACTIVISION OR EA MADE A CALL OF DUTY OR BATTLEFIELD VIDEO GAME BASED ON THIS MOVIE IT WOULD BE BETTER THAN THE CALL OF DUTY OR BATTLEFIELD CURRENT.

The original is better, don't turn it into modern rubbish please.
Forest scene - original much better than this high contrast darkness which doesn’t even go with the birdsong in anyway - as the original did.
Leave it.
No point in "restoration".
The original was a Good movie. I thought James Coburn was a perfect fit for his part.
Nothing sounds quite like an MG-42.
awesome
