- I review, breakdown and explain The Boys Season 4. I discuss episode 4 with Homelander returning home and seeking revenge on the people that caused his trauma when he was younger. I react to why his inclusion was perfect, Antony Starr’s performance, Frank and Marty’s death, the ending with Barbara and the deeper meaning of what it meant for the character. I analyze Homelander's future and give my theories and predictions for episode 5.

Do you think this was Antony Starr's best performance as Homelander? Making us sympathise with the character for the first time in four seasons is no easy task and I think he did great with that! Let me know your thoughts below!
It was very good, you should look up anti-social personality disorder, also one of the best treatments for cptsd is ideal parent figure protocol, understanding a child deprived basic emotional needs is a hot mess, its very difficult to move past unresolved childhood trauma, the best way i can explain it is all the little traumas build up and it becomes a kind of mental log jam that can only be untethered bit by bit, every single traumatic event put under a microscope, it's a lifetime of erasing the trauma, nobody is really "healed" or "cured" and having such an insane childhood totally deprived of any parental bonding at all sounds crazy but happens a lot. .
Antony Starr deftly encapsulated the shame and trauma from adolescent, which most of us repress as well. On the flip side, the actor also projects Homelander as the embodiment of raw Freudian id. His most impactful scenes are ones where he liberates himself from juggling his sexual/aggressive instinctual drives versus the more rational, ego & superego mediation instilled by societal upbringing.
Perhaps as children, we've also fantasized punishing those who have wronged us in the past, be it schoolyard bullies or guardians. Homelander's retribution rage was a reflection of our collective displacement. Lurking only in our darkest imaginations.
It totally was. I really need to watch banshee. I liked antony star a lot in cobwebs too.
I can’t empathize with him. We already knew his childhood sucked. Same thing the Russians did to Soldier Boy. Of course Homie was a kid and it fractured his psyche. Literally splintered it in to dissociative identities… That somehow communicate with each other. Even his mental illness is super powered.
@@videocongrel Banshee is one of the coolest one of the most unique shows where you’ll never ever learn the main character’s actual name. People will tell you it’s Lucas Hood. First episode will show why…
Starr deserves a goddamn Emmy for this, he has reached Heath Ledger Joker and Dafoe Green Goblin levels of peak
I think Chace doesn't get enough recognition for his character, he does a whole lot of more intimate acting with his face and small gestures, like being truly creepy with a blooming onion takes a lot of understanding how to be creepy with a blooming onion. His scenes with Susan are gold, they work really well together.
Okay
Fax
Yes
I kinda think he is better
This episode Homelander showed everyone that he is a bigger person, by forgiving the dude he played paper basketball with.
I think the point is he didn’t. The guy deserves his fate, but he isn’t truly forgiven. This is contrasted with Hughie forgiving a train for real
Wooosh
I think this is about him shedding the last bit of his humanity. The memories he carries that hinder him from being who he needs to be. He's still oppressed by his past. He is shedding that.
@@KyleWallPuncher the monsters got your brain firing on all cylinders figuring that out 😂😂
@@TaterTotsNFanta Im literally shaking rn i cant stop
"It was perfect, PERFECT. Everything, down to the last, minute details."
Didn’t know scarface is a big fan of the boys 😂
Hello scar face did ya miss me
Vought hired the “best” psychologists, and instead of teaching him empathy, they turned him into a neurotic with a bottomless need for love that he can never be satisfied. No way that could ever go wrong.
They handled it pretty accurately to real life. When have humans ever used destructive weapons humanely?
If someone like Homelander was created in real life you bet the government would treat him exactly like the show
You can't teach empathy. And all supes has very low empathy, thats can be planned by Voight. Just for them being killers.
A lot of credit to Anthony Starr not just for acting but for understanding the character. Kripke initially wanted Homelander to come down and be far more cruel and blunt to the scientists, Anthony suggested tgem taking a far more nuanced approach with Homelander being sentimental and almost nostalgic at times.
Not trying to be mean or dissmisive but whered you hear this? Would be cool to see an interview about this scene. Just wouldnt expect one to already be out since the episode literally released yesterday idk lol
@@boozledbamboozeler3822i really hope he replies
@@boozledbamboozeler3822here' s the link of the interview. Starr changed a lot of things from the original draft that made it too good
@@pheonix6908 I think UA-cam deletes links for whatever reason so ill quote Kripke from a ScreenRant article,
" The original draft had Homelander coming down there and being just cruel top to bottom. It was very much like he was coming down there to torture those people and basically pull the wings off flies. Ant called me and he said, 'That feels wrong to me. This is like my home. I think there would be moments where I would be very childlike and sometimes confused. I could be cruel, but then I could feel bad about being cruel and I could just be this mess where you never know how I'm going to react next.'
Man, was he right. What makes that story is he comes down there and he almost becomes that kid again. So it's really remarkable and it's terrifying. "
Thank you hero @boozledbamboozeler3822
The one thing that keeps getting brought up is the fact that at ANY moment, Homelander had a chance of actually coining out better person. If any of those scientists had a conscience, like he said; if any of them said ‘this was wrong’, he would’ve probably became slightly better. But he was never ‘John’ to them, he wasn’t even homelander.. he was just a product. The scientists try to appeal to his humanity by calling him John, but they already ripped it apart from him years ago.
People like to compare him to the joker and green goblin, but imo he reminds me more of Ramsey Bolton from GoT. Everytime he's on screen, you feel the fear everyone else has of him
That's a good comparison!
yea u instantly get that bad feeling when hes on scene
Definitely Ramsay Bolton. I had forgotten about him. He was a special kind of villain.

Still Homelander. Plenty if children get burned alive in ovens and they never became ruthless terminating machines. Probably because they didn’t survive the burning…
The real enemy is Starlighters!
He was fantastic. The tension was great. His facial expressions and mannerisms were amazing
His performance was just incredible
I really don't understand the people saying that the show lost its touch and has too much going on in its plot. I don't know about anybody else but episode 4 literally had me at the absolute edge of my seat the entire time I was watching it. And all of the characters stories seem to tie into a central theme of dealing with their past in one way or another.
This is by far the best season yet, the writing, choreography, acting, are as strong as they've ever been. The fight scenes actually look good this season instead of cut cut cut every second. It's mainly anti woke peoole criticising the show for being too on the nose
@@joebond545 nah frenchie and kimiko plots are ass.
@@stachpema452Agreed tbh, could have been better
@@Bap-lt4ms they should not even be there. Those plot could have been used in 2nd season but not in the 4th.
Good episode but the other 3 were mostly weak and it's due to weak subplots that there was no build up for and they also make little sense for the characters and they don't advance the plot either. This shi Advanced the plot. Who knows what Homelander does in the 2nd half of the season
5:23
Anthony may get an Emmy for performance, but that's how you get one for writing,
and the smile at the end? No anger, all satisfaction.
He's The Homelander, and he can do anything.
the way homelander’s blood-covered smiling face resembles patrick bateman on the front of american psycho is incredible
Makes me sick that Starr, even Urban have not been nominated yet they just had to nominate every single person in every single HBO show every single time.
I mean House of the dragon is also phenomenal let's not get it twisted lol
Definitely deserves to be in the conversation!
I agree but I don't think the Emmys take shows like The Boys all that seriously.
@@naturistfredbecause those execs at the pointy end of the Emmys are Vought in all but name.
If u compare it with boys in terms of character arc writing and especially if u take acting.. c'mon Maan..no way house of the dragon is half a mile close to the boys lol..this Homelander guy alone did an Oscar worthy performance in the show..how cn u even compare such an impeccable acting with a show full of straight bland Stern rock face characters who only gets recognised cuz of some jawline..makeup and sound design 🤷🏻♂️🤣@@joebond545
The thing is that Homelander will never get over his need for love. Not only is this a basic human need that he was born with, but it was extremely amplified through trauma and psychological/physical torture. It is ingrained in his mind and he is being delusional (as usual), when saying that he doesn’t need it anymore. I think what actually happened is that he tried to cope with trauma by hurting his abusers. It worked to some degree, but it’s only temporary. His only defence against the trauma is the delusion that he is not human (he is) and his own mortality is a constant reminder of that. So he can’t escape that. Unfortunately, the only way it can go further is insanity
more V or better V? Stormfront and Soldier Boy seem to not age at all or at the very least extremely slow and non-humanly. The next logical move would be for Homelander to go find his father analyze his blood and artifically extend his life with Vought scuentists. Also to clarify Soldier Boy isn't immortal he's just extremely durable and can't die from natural causes like normal humans and modern supes
The fact that homelander is schizophrenic really shows the trauma that was caused to him by simply spending time in the "bad room".
His performance was right up there with heath ledgers joker. Terrifying and yet intriguing into the psyche of a villain.
It's even beyond that to be honest.. Homelander is a more complex character than joker to act on screen.
You certainly felt for Homelander regarding his traumatic childhood. As a viewer you get why he is the psychopath we know him as.
Yes, every villain has a sad and traumatic past.
Really? that's just an excuse for murderers and gangsters. He's nearly indestructible.... he was already a beast out of the room so damn testing him and making him even stronger now works against him? Nuh... he's upset that they made him world leader?
The way that Anthony Starr has portrayed homelander is incredible. You can see his decent to basically madness from the 1st season until this latest episode, but this episode and performance was PHENOMENAL. He has put on one of the best villain portrayals I have ever seen. He DESERVES a Oscar at this point
Hater been quiet since this episode dropped.
Because episodes 1-3 were just okay. This was a legit 10/10 episode cause homelander baby
@@CaleebTalib the main complaint of those episodes were they were making fun of one side. Episode 4 completely disproved that if people weren't so easily offended they would have enjoyed the episode more.

his performance was perfect. Perfect, everything down to the last minute details
The Frank scene was absolute perfection. The axe forgets what the tree remembers. I absolutely loved this episode and how everytime we feel bad for John, we remember he’s Homelander. Hearing how he was a threat to humanity before he was even out of the womb was just perfect. Antony Starr deserves all the praise and more.
Homelanders scenes in the lab were the most uncomfortable ive felt watching the show so far. One of the best episodes of the series.
100%!
Thousand percent agree unreal acting he was incredible played his role to perfection. Anyways appreciate these discussion/theory videos pal, whilst waiting for the next episode they keep us going, the wait is long! Stay blessed ♥️
homelander landed on his home
His 'engineered' psyche and accelerated (or even just normal) aging makes Homelander seem like far more of a 'product' compared to supes like Stormfront, Soldier Boy, or even Black Noir.
In a tragic sort of way.
It was a great episode but I NEVER want to rewatch it 😂
COME ON MARTY! PUT YOUR BACK INTO IT!!
Your life is literally in the palm of your hands
Homelander isn't a villain.
But he isn't a hero either.
He's just... Human🤷♂️
Don't tell him that!
Good way to get yourself lasered saying stuff like that.
I think anyone who was put through that as a child would turn into a complete psychopath. Honestly Homelander almost seemed he turned out astonishingly well surprisingly considering how he was treated as a child.
Hold up, Homelander is the Bad Guy?!
hahaha
But he saved my granny from falling off the Grand Canyon
Fake news! Homelander was there for us always. He was even there when my cousin committed suicide! He tried to save her but he couldn’t catch her before she hit the ground
Starlighter nonsense trying to destroy our America.
its probably butcher
At least he gave them food before tearing them to pieces..Wont wanna die on an empty stomach now would we??
I honestly think reading the comics and seeing how well the show adapted and reworked so much actually adds a layer to the whole show. IMO idgaf what other people’s opinions on the comic itself is, as as “shitty” as it was, I still enjoyed what it was as a whole. That plus seeing the show, I find having that background reading, makes everything better. Knowing the characters from the book and seeing the expansions taken place story wise is amazing. Homelander has went from a POS 1-2 note character, to actually having some depth behind him, still being a POS but having further insight elevates the experience.
100% He's an incredibly talented actor!
Yeah he deserves the recognition for sure!
You know, in reality, those scientists would have shot themselves up with V after seeing the results.
Homelander just being Homelander
Literally
Love this Episode and Starr’s Performance, although This makes me wonder if this makes John more Human or has he embraced the Monster that Homelander has Become.
Watched it last night. First time I felt legit sympathy for homie when it showed flashbacks of him in the oven. Dude just wanted a family. Those people legit deserved what happened because they unleashed that on everyone else, it was their just “desserts” lol
I felt he wasn’t acting 🎭 he was doing it for real 😮 it was extremely realistic and unsettling at the same time.
thanks for the video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing video. Amazing performance by Starr. Honestly though, he intimidates me even when he isn’t acting. Maybe he’s just that good.
Glad you enjoyed the video!
i understand homelander but i don’t feel bad, because of how he went about it.
Give the man an Emmy!
Homelander series I don't want to end ever
Such an iconic character
Homelander doesn’t like a madman because he wants to be loved, but like he said in season 3 he would settle for being feared if he lost his chance to be adored.
If Voght actually treated him like a person and a leader in the making he would have had his good side be fully developed. Sure he would still be a bit of an egotistical prick but Homelander has shown an appreciation for real loyalty and love and would reciprocate.
He is just too broken and psychologically crippled to be that man.
This episode hit home with what Vogelbaum said all those years ago. "You needed a family and love", Vought could have had Superman instead they have Frankenstein's Monster and the monster hates them
So, this was the death/conquering of his human side, right? Now he's just a Supe. A god. Homelander is now free, and completely psychotic. That was my take as soon as he smiled and laughed in the elevator, covered in blood and gibs.
I am curious how this show ends; how Homelander ends. If they kill him, or strip him of his powers to live as a pathetic, weak human.
This is one of those shows that is consistently great. I'm glad they're calling it after 5 seasons instead of running out of steam and becoming crap (like Lost).
Nah..That Human side is still very much there...He will end up dying saving Ryan or something
@@mekareactsandreviews3026I doubt it, I think the worst ending for Homelander would be His powers being gone and him having to live a “normal” life

Anthony Starr is an absolute revelation as Homelander
The perfect casting!
@@BrainPilot Yes perfect indeed !
The conflict homelander has inside him is a reflection on all his beliefs and makes this episode crucial to understanding him, we get hinted throughout the series and know that a child raise by vought wouldn’t be raised in any stellar condition but this was it. Homelander doesn’t want to be human or equal to humans due to never being treated as one in childhood. Never given any grace or human love. His conflict is that he can’t beat that ingrained need for human acceptance which in his mind is his final link to humanity. I hope for the sake of entertainment that this was like his final attachment and he beats that need to be likeable to humans. I think true villainy will ensue after these actions.
Anthony Starr is absolutely, terrifyingly good. His performance in The Boys Season 4 Episode 4 was surreal. You just never know how he's gonna do something horrific to someone, and his ability to switch emotions at the drop of a dime, make him even more scary. Anthony Starr definitely deserves a nomination for an Emmy.
Yeah he definitely does!
Just as the show was arguably getting tired, we get this ❤
I remember watching the first few seconds of the elevator dinging down and I instantly thought it was gonna be homelander and when I saw he had the cake I thought it was gonna come back to him in there with everyone dead and I didn’t think they would go into that much detail that soon
The one thing that was absolutely bone chilling was his laugh after he lazered off the one guys, uh, dirty bits. We’ve seen him laugh before, but it always felt haughty and fake. This one not only felt real, but scary. You can hear the pain, anger, and sadistic joy in how he’s cackling at the suffering. It felt like watching the Joker torture someone with an echoing and ear piercing laugh.
It ain’t the boys it’s the homelander
I love the boys so much I truly don’t want it to end :( I do have one small complaint about the episode. Why would John’s(HL) childhood tormentors be in that same room practically waiting for him to arrive? I get the point of the episode I just wished they planned that a little better.
Yeah it did seem weird
What's so strange about it? They work there... Also, one of the tormentors wasn't present and had to be called in, so your thesis isn't even true. If you want to look for plotholes, there are much better ones, they forgot that Homelander had x ray vision when he was trying to shoot Hughie for example an episode prior ;)
@@jadzia666the vents have zinc so that’s not a plot hole either
@@dirtydra123Tbf they don’t really mention it often in the show, so it makes sense that people are confused
@@dirtydra123 And the vents also take away flying, superstrength, superhearing and the sense of smell from Homelander? The ice rink scene literally made zero sense, it was retarded and they added it for the schock value only because they thought Jesus slicing people with ice skates would be cool. If the vents had zinc inside, why didnt he fly towards the noise in a second and just crushed Hughie? You can argue as much as you want, but this moment is really non-defendable. And it's not even the worst culprit when it comes to things that make zero sense, the worst one is Maeve surviving from season prior. It just invalidates the whole season and makes Soldier Boy useless as a character. He was supposed to be a nuclear weapon that can kill Homelander. Not only did it not kill Maeve, it took away her powers and she survived falling from a skyscraper as a human afterwards. What was the point of Soldier Boy then? I can already see the same downhill path as in Game of Thrones in season 5, where they started sacrificing consistency for "scenes that might look cool" and I'm really worried
Thank you
You're welcome, John
Absolutely brilliant performance, up there with the likes of Heath Ledger
Honestly all respect to Ledger but this is taking it to the next level. Ledger did all he could in a couple hours of screen time. But the Boys basically have seasons of time to characterize Homelander and his motivations. They can slowly peel back the layers and show the layers of fucked up that Homelander truly is.
It's even beyond that to be honest.
I'm curious if there's any cameras in there that will come up later
He disabled everything, its shown from the start
He destroyed them all before coming down.
something I think people miss is that homelander did see these scientists as family. There little things like how stares longingly at the picture of him with the scientists.
For homelander and his fucked up world killing those scientists was probably in the same ball park as cutting off toxic family members
Its 100% clear why he called it the bad room. I have no questions.
There is no show without Homelander...u can't say that about most of the characters on the show.
Very true!
He needs and deserves his flowers definitely
The first three episodes were so weak, But episode 4 was perfect.
Episode 4 was so good!
john, your story is a sad one but it doesn't excuse your actions
Homelander is now centered, making him even more dangerous.
In my humble opinion, Season 04 Ep 04 was Anthony Starr's peak performance as Homelander. As of the writing of this comment (maybe he outperforms himself in later episodes, I don't know), there has not been a better display of acting skill, surpassing even the plane scene. While I was watching the episode, I found myself wanting to go back to the lab everytime the plot moved somewhere else. The guy truly deserves all the recognition that is surely going his way.
We just found one weakness that can take him down. If a story comes out in that show that embarrasses homelander to the whole world and everyone turns against him, it will be the beginning of the end for him. Because he will be shunned and ridiculed at the same time. The worst kind of social death. His relationship with stormfront could be that thing if her dna helped create him. Mommy issues indeed.
It’s been da best in every season
And now he is going to find out that hurting the people who hurt you doesn't actually make you stop hurting. May God have mercy on everyone within laser eye distance of him when he realizes that.
Out of every attack, experiment, and everything else that has been inflicted upon Homelander, Barbra has definitely done the most damage.
Guess I’m the only one who liked him better without the back story. Just seems like more melodrama on top of some already melodramatic plot points this season. How many topics do we wanna cover? Mental illness, pregnancy termination, Kimiko’s past, whatever the world is going on with Frenchie, racism, trials, Butcher dying, Hughie’s mom, Hughie’s dad, and i’m sure there’s more. Any one or two of these could’ve been the focus this season. But they wanna do it all at once.
Hughies Mum is Homelanders Mum. She has super senses and laser/xray vision from compound V and thus why Homelander is hers and Soldier Boys son with a mix of there powers. It makes sense seen as she could see through Hughie that he was hiding the compound V. Homelander is Hughies older brother and his Mum had to leave Hughies Dad due to reasons pertaining to Homelander and safety etc.
Do you think this could be true?
That’s very out there but a cool take!
@@NONAM.E00 It’s probable and would make for an ever more interesting plot. I was the first person not being part of the show runners or cast etc to say that Butcher would take compound V but did not get acknowledged for it for reasons unknown to me. After I said it online I remember some article talked about it online yet did not mention the theory came from me. I am good at putting things together and I watch many films and episodes. I would love to star in the boys as a Supe.
@@NONAM.E00 just watched a little clip and apparently Hughie is hallucinating like Butcher is so his mums not real. that could be the case
I knew it was going to be a happy reunion when he brought a nice cake.
So true! Shame it melted
I’m surprised those scientist’s didn’t keep some trempV on hand incase homelander ever came back.
They still wouldn't have stood a chance!
There was like ten of them, of course they would’ve stood a chance.
Please give bro a emmy🙏
The episode starting and ending with the elevator the way it happened was amazing.
Definitely!
The new season sks so hard, dropped the show at episode 2
Watch episode 4 and love the treat lol
“Pure… clean. Like marble…”
Who is the lady in the red room?
Barbara. She basically ran the show in B6
Homelander is no more evil Superman, now he's become the Joker
He's working his way up to Big Daddy Stan Edgar😮
Imagine the scenes!
It’s wild the range in episode 5 between Homeland and Starlight. I mean Homelander had sooooOOOoooo many micro gestures displayed and then you have Starlight who I don’t want to knock so hard because I’m sure she’s sad for doing the plastic surgery…but she had equal amount of screen time but was soooo wooden because she lost a bit of facial expressiveness…sucks man. I almost think successful shows should create mandatory contracts that restrict actors from doing dramatic facial surgery’s if they want to stay in the show.
👍
This guy single handedly skyrocketted the whole season 4 to another level from those lame first few episodes..literal perfection and impeccable acting skills🗿🔥
Can always rely on Homelander to do that
The first 3 episodes were good but a step down from the first 3 seasons. But this episode killed it. Litterly.
Starr is carrying this show, hands down.
Yeah he's so good as Homelander!
And butchers actor too
Homelander is carrying season 4 HARD
And this is just the beginning of his mid-life crisis, wait til hes 60+ with bad knees😂
60 with bad knees and you're right. 😁 I feel so seen.
😂😂
I wonder if Ryan can kill him 🤔
That's a thought right there
I can see that being a route they'd pursue. Seeing as he was killed by a clone of himself in the comics and Ryan is his own flesh and blood (read: the closest thing we have to another Homelander), it would be in quite fitting.
We all know he’s great but atrains actor is too to show he has regrets and feels bad while doing bad thing is crazy
Yeah A-Trains story is great in this season as well!
I love Homelander
He's such an interesting character!
Starlights the true villain homelander is americas hero! (Theyre making me say this and leak hughies location or else they blast my head off)
Homelader out here being Vecna and shit
Anthony Starr just needs better material and he would win an Emmy.
He deserves an emmy anyway!
Starr has given a good performance and certainly has been the shows greatest strength. But these scenes added very little this far into the run and just seemed rote. At least this filler was better than all of the other filler that has characterized this season. Too much padding and subplots have dragged this show down.
I thought he called ot the bad room cause as a child he kept visualizing butchering all th ppl working on him
Why didn't he kill barbra ?
He respects her more than the others. She never feared him as they did. Homelander admires her courage, so to speak.
She will die from dehydration.
She was the one supervising the people on the lab that were doing vile things to him without participating directly herself, so in his twisted revenge he made her watch him kill all the people in the lab and let her slowly die there with their corpses just like she watched them torture him as a kid. Poetic
Dificult to Act.. respect..
Yeah he's so good in this role
Homelander got to get closure…. Luckiest “villain”
Yeah, but he killed innocent people that weren't even born yet when he was locked up in that lab.
Homelander is not perfected if anything he’s flawed even more now baraba told him the truth when she could of tucked tail… she repeats the same thing his subconscious mentioned next episode he’s not going to be perfect he’s going to be Tony Soprano season 4 with superpowers
