Chrollo definitely isnt a sociopath he deeply cares for the troupe members. I see it as a lack of value in his own life and a inability to see that they care for him.
I always thought he was a complete sociopath who deeply wishes to at least pretend he's not. His orders and his actions all come across as someone who both understands the shape and idea of attachment and emotion, but who doesn't get the heart of it whatsoever. He will get revenge for Uvo, but doesn't chase it with Nobunaga's passion. He cares for the Spider, but not in the emotional way Pakunoda does. He likes fighting, but not in the sexual joy way that Hisoka does. He always came across to me as a sociopath who realized he wasn't normal at a very young age and spent the rest of his life trying to act the part
The thing is, they don't know the kind of person Kurapika is. He can easily just not honor the deal and get Pakunoda AND Chrollo on top of getting the hostages back The point of these orders from Chrollo is to not put the rest of the spiders at risk. He's just expecting them to be rational

I mean he's still able to mute his empathy for the majority of other people automatically because of the fucked up shit he's been through, but he's not able to completely turn it off. Hisoka is a genuine psychopath and funnily enough he's slightly closer to the ideal Chrollo is chasing than Chrollo himself. Chrollo wishes he could just have a singular goal (the spider and its purpose) and keep himself locked away from everything else including emotions in the pursuit of that goal, much like Hisoka does, but he can't because as opposed to Hisoka he feels for others even if only in specific circumstances and for very few people. Chrollo's empathy can come out strongly in some situations and I don't think he's faking. Just because he expresses himself in a muted manner doesn't mean his emotions are fake. He's just as calm as his role needs him to be. He certainly didn't start out that way. If anything his calm with occasional bout of emotions even (and especially) when no one relevant is watching is why I think he wishes he was a sociopath. He tries to think like one, but he doesn't feel like one.
The way Kurapika sky rocketed in my list of favorite character in general when he closed the call on Phinx. Gotta a love a revenge driven king who gives negative f*cks

I don't quite agree, but it's very close. I know that it's also from their own sense of loyalty, but the fact that nearly half of the group is willing to let Chrollo die, and that Chrollo doesn't understand that most of the group would follow the commands for his sake, puts em a little behind the straw hats in my opinion. Again, I know it more so comes down to a sense of duty for the spider than it is about their bond, but it doesn't feel right to put them at the same when I absolutely can't see anyone in the straw hats leaving anyone to die ever, and I also don't see the straw hats misunderstanding each other like Chrollo does here with the rest of the troupe. Well except for maybe Zoro, but that's only if he feels they've betrayed the straw hats
@@Charley-ju6yg The specific dynamics are different but the loyalty aspect seems comparable, they are loyal even if it kills them precisely because it's the same adoptive family as the Strawhats. Chrollo doesn't have Luffy's emotional intelligence but he does share his charisma, they are practically the anti-Strawhats, mirrored but still fundamentally similar.
I love that even Chrollo is annoyed by having to deal with hecklers in public spaces and try to avoid eye contact! "use bite" even better. Gon & Killua got her monologuing. Evil's fatal flaw thwarts the villain's plans yet again xD "Oh she put her strings in her own body" Nah, she just has mad abs. I also love the part with Chrollo near the end. It's a perfect example of what we discussed last time about intelligence. Chrollo is a very smart guy, for being the troupe's boss and having the ability he has, it's a necessity to be smart. And yet this is one more example of him being completely wrong. He has value as a hostage in the end because there's a difference between the troupe's ideals and the reality of sacrificing him and he's discounting that reality.
Anyone that haven't watch the old version, I highly recommend this part of the arc. It had a full episode dedicated to Pakunoda thinking what to do and it was great I FORGOT ABOUT PHINKS GETTING SASSY AND KURAPIKA HANGING HAHAHA
I think that the whole old anime is just plain better. As a matter of fact, I would actually recomend to watch that one instead, at least till the last episode of the old one and then make the jump. If I am being frank, the new anime just feels lacking. It seems to me like a recap of what actually happened in the manga/anime than telling a story. The events just happen too quickly without the drama or power that they old anime had in each scene.

I consider Senju from Yu Yu Hakusho to be the prototype for Chrollo... in case you forget who that person was they were the main antagonist for the arc after the Black Tournament. He was part of a seven person crew and had Psychic powers. If you never saw Yu Yu Hakusho all the way through then do not worry I left most of the twists for this excellent antagonist unmentioned. Look up fan art at your own risk as it would reveal his looks and ruin the moment of discovery in the anime. Then the other possible prototype was the dude that funded the Togoro Bro's in the Black Tourney. Either way I see their personality in Chrollo to some extent.
