Ontario SP10 Marine Raider: "I'm a Raider Fan Now" by Nutnfancy

- Wow...this is one impressive knife. And it costs just $65 . Looking at Ontario SP10 Marine Raider knife in pictures does not do it justice...at all. In fact I though it looked kind of goofy. I'm glad I gave it a chance. Seriously, you have to handle this HUGE blade to appreciate the heft and the potentiality of it all. Yeah it's heavy but when it comes to hacking, chopping stuff down, and wood splitting... heavy is good. It minimizes your work in the woods and helps prevent shock and vibration from wearing you out. If your system can take the weight, you will be glad you have it. Specifically the impressive SP10 cranks the scales at 27 oz but still weighs less than the also excellent Ontario RTAK II (reviewed). As I've said before, nothing will perform as good as wilderness "woodworking" than a big, strong blade like this. The 1/4" 1095 blade is a classic Bowie shape: sharp tip, good sweep, angled for better cutting, and strong. Look for my wilderness trials of this blade in the months that follow but I suspect it will hack, split, and chop with great efficiency. Also it is a very formidable combat knife that easily lop off an arm...no kidding. Other features include: Kraton polymer handle on top of the full tang, an interesting Cordura/Leather sheath that looks to be durable, a pivoting belt attachment, and epoxy blade coating. Minor downsides would include the lack of a full flat grind (FFG) and the cumbersome sheath required for the blade shape. The Marine Raider is a serious and intimidating blade that looks like it will excel in the woods...and it's cheap. Now I'm a Raider fan.////////////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 9 out of 10 (price considered)

Bought one of these at least ten yrs ago & I have to agree. This knife has held up extremely well with some hard use in different environs for me. A great camp knife for chopping and batoning. Back then I paid $40 at an Army surplus store. But truly even for $10 or so more it is well worth the money.
Great vids btw. Can't stop watching them.
Got it. Love it. Use it to pick through ice on occasion when setting rods ice fishing in -20 to -40. Really thought it would break the tip off early on, but it's proven me wrong for a few years now. Thumbs up on this one.
Not just high value, but high value made in america fuck yeah!
I think saber grinds are more effective than full flat, u get that wedge action earlier than with the full flat. Also I heard the unground portion of the saber grind absorbs the impact of the baton rather than having the tension transferred directly to the edge which can increase risk of blade breaks.
oh and btw man thanks for these videos they really help a lot cause there are so many crappy knives being sold out there and with these videos i got a really good idea of what to buy, thanks again
just got this knife love it thanks for the review
I've been close many times to purchasing this one. But I've always held back. I think now I'll go ahead and order one. Thanks Nutn!
I was thinkin about getting an SK5 Trailmaster. But you know what? This is supposed to be the same size, but Made in USA. Cheaper, and US made... that fucking rules!
Just ordered this blade (after your reveiw) from Ontario-knife-store, great price/ship'n and great service from Amy. thank you Nutn.
Been using it for certain things for many years.
just received mine in the mail today =]
It is a really good blade for the money. i got mine for $60 shipped.
Great review nutnfancy!!!!
cool really cool knife, nice review again
Just got one of these love it!
my dad always complains i need to use a hatchet around the farm to chop. but i love my raider to much! i took the origional coat off and tiger stripped it black and polished an area for reflection in a survival area! but the raider is a beast of a knife!
I bought this knife last year and I have used it to chop limbs off of trees, chopping 3 inch logs in half, and yes, batoning through said 3 inch logs. This is a great knife for the price, and will fit the role of a small hatchet nicely. I carry mine on a molle thigh rig and a small survival kit. Fire starter, light, flint, vaseline/cotton balls, two whistles and para-cord. Anyone considering to buy this knife, really listen to Nutnfancy because he knows what he is talking about. Great video! TY!
oh well,so... i will see what i can find there, so thanks a lot for the info, man. I really apreciate it.
Hey nutnfancy i just got the Ontario sp10 today in the mail, It's Simply Awesome!!!!!!!!!!
That's a nice looking knife!
I have this knife and love it so far. Buy it!
thanks a lot bro, well now i think i'm gonna buy the sp10, again thank you :)
Watching in 2015, ordered one just 2 days ago, got it now, and damn, it is manly!
Do not regret buying! :)
Got one of the new ones that are lazer etched on the ricasso instead of stamped. Not sure if this makes any real difference, although the look of the stamped is slightly more appealing.
I have a version of this knife from Ontario and I LOVE IT! Full tang, high carbon steel, great grip. I sharpened mine to a razor and it's held up to some pretty good abuse. I do agree that the sheath is not the best. For the price, you'd be hard pressed to find better...
Very cool knife. Good comparison with the Ka- Bar. Nice review.
This knife is awesome. My go to survival/woods blade.
I've had mine since 2005, used it extensively far above the polar circle and far below, during my work in the army. I love it to bits! it has never failed me, it has not seen anywhere near as much rust as other knifes of my colleagues, and proven to be an all out durable tool.
the ONE thing I dont like is its sheath. anyone have a good idea for a new sheath?
Looks good, I will have to pick one up, I'll prolly end up making my own sheath for it though.
I got one of this. One thing is to see it in the video, and another different thing is to see it on your hands. It is a great knife, high quality.
Love your videos. You the man. I would love to see a comparison/reviews on the kabar heavy Bowie vs Ontario sp10 marine raider Bowie. Thanks
i had it for close to five years and it hasn't broke. it looks exactly the same as when i bought it.
I always enjoy using this knife. Besides how good it works I feel like Crocodile Dundee without the croc's
Thank you for your reply! couldnt seem to find any sheats in a quick google search, or on ebay though, any tips?
OMYGAWSH this is a cool cool knife! :D oh nutn.
looks nice and meaty yesterday i bought a buck strider fb tanto and that thing is a beast the only thing i dont like about is how the serration comes about halfway up the blade
It looks to be very similar if not a continuation of the Western W49 Bowie.
Just noticed.
own it, love it!
Fricken awesome
I am looking for a good chopping knife bc my older one broke. i havent been looking at new knives and was wondering which of these is the best chopper: Sp10 marine raider, coldsteel trailmaster, or rtak 2? Thanks great vids
They're similar. Both are a type of Kraton. My Ontario gives me a great grip. I would totally recommend Ontario.
hey man, been watching your vids. very interesting. Which branch of service are you in? you got another subscriber by the way.
Eagerly awaiting the test in the woods, I want to see how she chops and how the blade geometry works in real life. Also, try Breakfree CLP for rust protection, once I started using it, there was no going back. Guns, knives, swords ect.
I love that clip point
I have the SP19 TaskForce. It's similar to this, but a bit smaller, more regularly-shaped, and has serrations for the first 2 inches.
I know what he means when he says you need to hold this knife if your hand in order to appreciate it. It's big, thick and heavy. Almost like a mini kukri machete. You will feel like Rambo himself when you hold it.
I keep mine hidden behind my bed and sleep well at night.
fantastic
i agree that this is a nice blade especially for the value ...
damn right, that bear be tryin to touch your skippy!
Question guys. I just bought one. How come the tip of the knife is super pointy, unlike this one in the video?
Great Knife design, but I think it would be much better in the 5160 Steel, that steel preforms great with larger knives, like my Ranger RD-9, which was bent alot, and straightened right out, and another beast of a knife my SP-53, but if you say the 1095 is good steel In that knife, I trust you, Thanx NutN.
If I'm looking to lay my life on a single knife, LOTS of batoning, should I go with this or the Large Heavy Bowie by Kabar? Duribility being the deciding factor, not ease of chopping.
hello... do you think the sp10 is better then sp5??? what wold be the best pick???
Hello nutnfancy, you mention that this knife can hold it's own against any custom knife out there, I'm interested to know how you think it will compare to the cold steel natchez bowie knife?
I received this knife by accident. (I ordered the SP6). Seems alright. But it's not really turnin' me on. Maybe if I get out and beat on it a little, like my (now discontinuted) Kukri from Brigade Quartermasters. Love that knife. My only beef with the Ontario knives is their shoddy sheaths.
looking to buy one of my first survival knives, on a budget so i can't buy a trailmaster :'( but i'm down to either the SP 10 Marine Raider or the Ka-Bar Heavy Bowie. would like some input becuase as far as i can tell they both look awesome. thank u Veri and Nutn
hey nutnfancy! I enjoy your reviews, I am a big fan of ESEE blades. Please review the ESEE JUNGLAS.
thanks
where did you get it?
because of your review and tree chopping video, I bought it from cheaper than dirt. I got it for $33.30!!!
yeah. I know he's an LtCol. But I saw the shooting range one, and it was mostly army, but it was a multi service one, so it may be.
Is the SP10 a hollow or flat ground blade?
what about this versus the heavy bowie from ka bar?
I love my sp10 ive EDCd it for over a year in a half batoning wood and everything ive thrown at it eats up like nothing
Also I find it throws well (blade) if your experienced
The black paint is a rust protection coat and is great for tactical use so your not shinning sun rays around. ALSO MADE IN THE USA.
Would you prefer this over the Ka-Bar Heavy Bowie?
@general38
I think the blade would rather explode than bend... The carbon makes it VERY hard and more crispy than other steel types.
where did you find it for 50 i've only seen them for 60
Does the thumb guard dig in your hand?
well yes.. I got the sp5 and sp10 but i have only used the sp5, and it do the job very well...
thanks :)
thanks.
Good rib seperation capabilities!
hey what do u think of this knife as a combat knife
Is this version better than the Ontario sp5?
im not sure whether to get a sp5 or an sp10
yes, i know, we are all different so its a matter of taste. Anyway, I know Ontario and Ka-bar gives much knife for their prices. In deed, I am now searching for a marine raider to buy and try it, so i can compare it with my high end survivals like my Busses, and with other cheap stuff like Ka-bar Heavy Bowie, but is much out of stock anywhere.
i like good wieght to my blades, used to collect ever since i was young, a muela is surprisingly the best knive i;ve eve owned i love ontario knives
its not that they have wider spines, its that the width of the spine stays full right up to about last inch where it tapers sharply into main point.
Mine comes in the mail on monday on the 8th
is this a full tang knife ?
could that full guard be easily converted to a half guard??? I love the look other than that full guard.
just bought one 2nd hand...........missing the belt loop on the sheath, but I'll soon cobble up one myself. Reminds me of the old US Bolo Machete, even though the blade shape is different..........the 'concept' is the same. Both have 1/4" thick blades, a substantial double guard, and a hooked grip. The overall length is about the same, however the blade on MY Bolo has had a hard life, with evidence of substantial hammering on the spine.....I suspect to baton kindling ? And the blade profile is different, more like an axe grind......which should be no surprise as Plumb was one of the contractors who made these big knives. The handle scales are held on with Bondo and the guard has been belted forward, but it still cuts well despite being at least 70-80 years old..........I suspect the Spec Plus Bowie will do just as well and last just as long ?
@Slowboy123458
Rtak II is about 110 bucks, the SP10 is 59ish and the CS trail master (if you can currently find one) is about 130-145... I almost put down the 140 dollars for a CS trailmaster in SK5.. Until I picked up a SP10.. Frankly I can't see the SP10 doing any less of a good job then the Trailmaster. I really do feel like I can clear a forest with the SP10. Also Ontario seems to have updated the blade coating it is no longer just paint but paint and epoxy.
Thats a tough one. Ka-bar should be a better batoner since its full flat grind, ontario will chop better, it seems to have more weight up front and its 5/8 inch longer. I dont know about durability, by a look marine raider seems tougher, but i cant tell because of heat treatment and tang and other variables. Nutn will know, he tested both of them. And since he loved them both, i dont think choosing either one of them would be a mistake.
Get crazy on the tip. And it will break. Is it full tang. Again I ask where is Bugget.
I like big knives and I cannot lie :)
Unfortunately the UK has much stricter blade laws otherwise I'd have one of those in a second. Ever tried making kindling with an axe and a 2inch swiss army knife?
Great value for the price. But i dont like that clip point for survival.I preffer drop points. They´re more safe and dont take out weight where its most needed.I like full thick spine all the way thru the blade if its posible. 1/4" thickness if its posible. Of course we are talking about a 60 bucks knife, but i don´t think this Ontario can outperform my Busse FHS in any way.Even beeing a longer blade.
Do you still like this Blade Nutn ?
specially if the SP line is discontinued it cost me $130 bucks to get one in the UK.. review / test vid soon
whered could i happen to pick one of these bad boys up?
i have to say that i prefer my sp-11 over the ps-10. I think it's the leave shaped blade that i prefer. Having said that i far prefer my kukri to my sp-11 especially when it comes to chopping, it's got a far better weight to it, it holds an edge like you wouldn't believe and it can be used for a myriad of other jobs.
but as with everything, every-one's view will vary. different strokes for different folks and all that.
The tip looks a bit narrow. Like to see you baton this through some hardwood.
awesome!!! awesome awesome
@vjanda1 - Cold Steel makes excellent knives. The 12 inch bowie machete by cold steel (as reviewed by nutnfancy) is one such knife. But as a general rule, machete's are thin blades and usually not good for batoning through logs. If you want something that is just tough as nails, look into this SP10 the equally impressive Ontario SP5, Cold Steel laredo bowie, etc. Any of these would be a suitable (and stronger) substitute for a machete, but they will be heavier.
i must have one
have you ever had a custom?
whare can i buy thi knife
check out the cold steel trailmaster and recon scout. There you go!
You posted this in 2008. It's now 2013. Still have this knife as your most favorite for chopping wood?
i bought a knife that looks like that but it dont get smaller toward the handle it works GREAT for me and i only paid like $5
I just bought this one and another ontario bowie
damn. Straight 6mm? try out 6.5x55 swedish mauser. pretty beastly haha
is it a collectible or a work horse
