Oh I loved this album when it came out, it was like an antidote to the crappy nu metal that was flooding all the metal clubs (at least here in the UK). \m/
The Art of Self Defense (2000) is High On Fire's best album. A Doom Metal classic. Another essential Doom Metal album linked to High On Fire singer and guitarist Matt Pike is "Sleep's Holy Mountain" (1992) by the band Sleep. In this Doom Metal classic, Matt Pike is the guitarist...
yeah, I love the first two equally, followed by BBW, DitC was pretty great, everything from that point on had some highlights here and there, but nothing beats the organic sound of those first few records.
One of my all time favourite High on Fire tracks. The pounding drums and dirty grinding guitar with that awesome riff is just metal heaven. To me the remastered version loses the rawness that made this version so awesome.
Love High On Fire but this is Des before he hit his stride. Check out some of the newer stuff off Lumineferous or Electric Messiah. He's become one of the best metal drummers on the planet and he's quite unique to boot. Great content brother.
I love all periods of High on Fire, but many of us appreciate his earlier style up drumming. I lack the expertise to really articulate the difference, but his kit got more complex, the tempos often became more thrashy, and the production values less organic and analog. For me, I think the song Bloody Knuckles might be the best bridge between those two periods, and maybe my favorite drumming performance from Des all around. I'll probably request a response to that song and a few others down the road - Turk, Fury Whip, etc.
I was going to suggest the next song on the same album "10 000 years but I see youve already reacted to that one 👍 there is a redone version (not sure if its remastered) thst is a lot cleaner, some like it some dont 😮 "Rumors of War" is a good one. Once again Matt Pike unable to find a shirt that fits 😂
Brand New High on Fire album released last month and its GREAT Burning Down is a great song In the studio version Matt Pike seems to have discovered A: Shirts B: Dentistry ,trust me his teeth were a mess 😂 C: A new Drummer 👍
Last comment 😅but Andrew, it would be interesting to hear your take/comparison to this first album’s drumming versus Des’s drumming on the one they won a Grammy for - Electric Messiah 🤘
Hey man, love your content! Please oh please check out band called Bela Fleck and song Magic Fingers! You will absolutely fall in love with there sound! Greetings, Fellow drummer

@@gratuitousfootnote1183 Agreed with Bloody Knuckles. That album in general is when he started to cement his style.
Devilution too
The best HoF song. Yay!
I think this might be the song I have listened to more than any other, period.

Not really my thing but the retro feel is kind of cool.
