I used to work for a woman who was general manager at a restaurant, I was just an assistant manager. She WAS Captain Janeway in nearly every possible way. I didn't watch Voyager at the time, so later when I started binge watching it streaming, I watched in amazement because I couldn't see anything but my old boss. She was a damned skilled, exceptional leader.
The show was amazing because of Janeway although when it first came out, I didn’t get to see it, but I did hear a friend of mine who was one of these big Trekkie types who I mean, she has her her own thing, including a blog and everything else that she was doing at the time when voyager came out and her comment was yeah it figures they make her a woman and then probably get her to get lost because obviously a woman couldn’t hold it together her attitude was that they made this female captain who is obviously she gets them all lost in the Delta quadrant and they were pretty pissed off because it seemed like anytime they ever showed females in charge of anything. They were always the ones who messed everything up the ones who got lost the ones who end up don’t ask most of the women that I knew, especially this who had her, she was really known as one of the before you know having these channels on UA-cam and she had this big following. I don’t know exactly how but she was saying how Star Trek has become a male chauvinist racist, etc. etc. and I didn’t. I hadn’t seen the show so I had no idea what she was talking about and I didn’t pay attention to what she was talking about time passes and I get to see the show mostly admittedly in reruns and I can’t help thinking wow this is better than any of the ones I have been watching certainly better than next generation and it’s better than deep space nine in many ways but I do see her point when she says it’s very male chauvinistic and racist but it took me a while to figure out the worst problem is a lot of these guys don’t even realize what they’re saying is chauvinistic and racist. They don’t realize they’re being sexist pigs, they don’t realize that they’re being racist either and I wish they’d listen to their own interviews and really pay attention to what they’re saying. I mean ensign Wildman I mean, she gives birth on Voyager and is on the ship for seven years and is still at the same rank and so is Harry Kim while Tom Paris White dude gets moved up in rank after a couple of years and even when he is knocked down in rank, he soon very soon afterward is moved once more up in rank not so either Kim or Samantha Wildman how is it that after seven years on board that ship they were not given a field commission, which they could’ve been given just like Tom Paris was and the answer is that Samantha Wildman when she came on board was only supposed to be on board for a short period of time and she was pregnant when she came on board now you could say that she didn’t move up in rank because well she had a kid and that must’ve made her not be able to do her job well enough well that’s a bunch of baloney if you haven’t been watching the show because we know that she is doing her job and that and others take the chore of keeping an eye on her daughter while she is busy doing her job. But if you want to do it that way and say that’s the reason what’s the excuse for not giving Harry Kim who is on Voyager for seven years who has more than one occasion save the damn place a field commission to Lieutenant it doesn’t make sense that he is a part and parcel of the main bridge crew, but he doesn’t even get the rank. He deserves in order to be part and parcel of when it’s the officers that have to have a meeting he’s there but he’s only an ensign (the lowest rank )so it doesn’t make sense that he is there in the first place.
For Robert Picardo to be there for her on the last day of filming, especially what actually happened, showed that Mr Picardo is 'a real class act', and a darn good man and friend.
In an interview with Kate Mulgrew discussing her last day on set, the actress was there alone, in character, with the director getting Janeway to say various lines the editors can use. When they said, "Ok, that's a wrap." after she had put so much emotion into those last clips for the editors, and the film crew literally started dismantling the Voyager set, her workplace of SEVEN years - then suddenly Kate Mulgrew was 'just another out of work actor' - it was quite emotionally powerful for her. Robert Picardo was waiting in the wings, unbeknownst to Kate Mulgrew, wanting be of support to her. Picardo wasn't being paid to be there. He'd already wrapped a day or so previously, but he had such compassion for his fellow actors that he wanted to be there for her. Robert Picardo said to Kate Mulgrew, something like, "Comeon Mulgrew, let's get drunk." when everything was being taken apart, "because the gig had finished and the crew were just doing the job" of getting the stage for the next production. I've only been doing film and television for ten years, as a background actor mainly, but when I've had the chance to 'walk the stage' when everything is gone, I have felt quite emotional.
@David-Graham Parker that is a well told story, thankyou! I always like Picardo, he was in so many fun movies from the 80s! Had a lot of fun watching him
@@RA10H56 I agree about Robert Picardo. I think his role in "China Beach" (1988-1991) where he played a grumpy doctor made him an easy choice for Voyager.
Captain Janeway was masterfully played by Kate Mulgrew. What a wonderful legacy! I sure hope she gets an appearance on Star Trek Legacy, she needs to have at least one interaction with Captain Seven of Nine!
I love her as an actress. I remember when I first saw a female captain i thought . Am I going to like this? Well ended up loving it .Voyager is my favorite of all the shows
Good interview/presentation. Janeway really was the BEST ST captain. My daughter and I started watching the series together when she was around 9 years old. Her name is Jane. I need not get into what it meant to have your daughter watch Capt. Janeway every week.
I reiterate and restate my previous comment posted on part 1: what an exceptional actress, what an exceptional human being--pure, unadulterated class at the very highest level!! Kudos to you, Kate!
Kate looks and sounds so similar to Katharine Hepburn that she could have been her daughter. I didn't get the chance to see the play on Broadway and was pleasantly surprised to find out that she was performing it in West Palm Beach, FL. I was home for the holidays and went to see her there. It was a one woman play. Due to the small size of the theater, it was a far more intimate theatrical experience than if I had seen it in a Broadway theater. It was also one that I will never forget. Kate was fantastic, she's a good actress.
For me, the first Star Trek was the best, but then Star Trek Voyager started and I love the seven seasons. Seven of Nine's character was a brilliant idea and then Star Trek Voyager met the real stars. Voyager will be seen by many in the future ... long after we all become dust. Mulgrew did something only a very brave actor could do in that situation: she didn’t run from the feminine nature of Janeway. She didn’t try to avoid being a woman captain. She didn’t try to be Picard. Instead she made Janeway a mother to her crew. She showed how a woman can lead as a woman.
I'd love to see her do a film of Voyager on the big screen or three and eventually get home to earth at least for a while before she grows board and must get in Space again! When will Voyager the movie be out with this Star? She would take the role quickly imo and much of the same cast would likely be there too.

however: for some reason, voyager did age a lot better than DS9, for my taste. in todays world, to just enjoy the occasional trek episode you had forgotten about, the focus on good standalone stories of voyager has become its strenght. im much more entertained watching some super entertaining standalone voyager episode than part 23 of some long story arc on DS9 where i know how its going to end.
weird how that works. anyway, its great that voyager aged that well.
@DarthYotho Ah Endgame... The most inspiring of all! Great episode, too bad it didnt have one more season where they finished off the borg!
Typecast...I was a giant voyager fan and watch her as Red and she was lightyears away from Janeway...
She's Titania/Fox's mom
in Gargoyles.
BEST CAPTAIN OF THE STAR TREK SERIES
Interesting. The woman whose first name is Katherine, played two iconic roles - both women named Katherine/Kathryn.
Sorry… the fact that Kate was jeleous of Jeri, and Diva’d to that end, helps me get over Kate Mulgrew. Not invited back to Star Trek Picard. No surprise.
So... When is the movie coming out? There had better be a movie coming out. Paramount? Hello? Do you recognise the potential here?!
@ramonasno What I meant was that the yaahyak comment was reported as spam, while it wasn't spam..Not that yaahyak said anything about spam itself
