How to Order Coffee in English at a Local Coffee Shop Like a Native

- Eight years ago I had a new one-on-one English student. We met in a local coffee shop for our first class and I immediately noticed that her English level was quite high. I was impressed.
But she couldn’t order a coffee. She was completely stuck and too nervous. Her English level was high but she couldn’t speak.
After a couple of classes, we met at the coffee shop again. This time, she ordered a coffee for the first time.
She cried. I did too.
That’s right. It’s the small things.
It’s the small things that make us so angry, embarrassed, and frustrated.
But it’s also the small things that makes us feel like we can do anything we want.
I believe you can have the freedom to say what you want in English. And I want you to feel the joy that happens when you can do something you really want (something really simple) in English. Without stress. Without fear.

When I visited America for the first time, one of our professors took me and another girl in the class to a cafe to talk. I truly didn’t know how to order coffee because I did not drink coffee very often at all! I remember saying something like “I want a coffee with many milk...” which sounded very dumb... But at that moment the professor spilt his drink and everyone forgot what I just said. Now he was the person feeling embarrassed lol!
Hey Annemarie, more one sensational video. It looks simple but it sometimes can be a nightmare LOL. I'm living in New Zealand and there is a tiny difference when we order. It was pretty nice learning with those differences that you taught us. For example, usually when the counter asks us if it's drink there or to go the counter says " have here or take away?". I have two options when I go to a Coffe Shop. If I go to order to go, I usually order tea, Earl Grey tea or Breakfast tea. But if my intention is to stay for a while in the Coffe Shop, I often order a typical American coffee with a piece of Lemon cake or blueberry muffin.
In my country, we enjoy drinking coffee. Mostly, regular coffee that is served in a cup of tea. We love drinking coffee with some typical food. We do not have the custom to order coffee to go. We prefer to taste the coffee when we are seated or at least stand on the balcony,

I’m going to coffee shop with local friend today. I’m ready to order.
I love flat white.
I’m originally from Japan and live in Singapore. Singapore has a lot of choices for local coffee.
“Kopi” is the most typical one and it means sweetened white coffe. Very sweet for me.
I like “Kopi C Kosong”. It means coffee with evaporated milk without sugar.
I like the slightly sweet, nutty-flavored coffee. So I always ask the staff in the coffee shops to spread some ground of pecans or hazelnuts on the foam of my latte.

Hazelnut almond latte with cinnamon rolls does wonders for me.
The other go-to option will be iced caramel macchiato

Well, I am a coffee person too. My favourite kind of coffee is latte. I ´ve been living in Spain, but I am Brazilian. In my country, I love having a "café carioca", it´s mean a short and not strong coffee. This is a fantastic way to start my day.

It's good to keep trying , but better of that is to achieve a goal !
My drink of choice is a frapuccino chai (venti or grande size) especially on summer and if the weather is too cold I ask for a hot chai spice tea.

What i love about English speaking clients is the effort they make to order in French instead though i speak English fluently 😁
Ps: English speaking clients and tourists are more polite than our French clients 🤷🏻♀️

We agree on the love of coffee. I say a coffee when you´re sad, when you´re happy, alone or in company. It´s the best option when you wake up. Without coffee the live would be worse.

I prefer drink a cup of black coffee in the morning but not always. Sometimes I don’t do it and i drink a tea. If i were in a coffee shop i’d ordered a coffee who been wrote in the first line of the list. I’d prefer to try all of these

There are four kinds of coffee in Taiwan. they are cappuccino, latte, mocha, caramel,and american coffee(black coffee). I like all of coffee.

What do you think about the level of English when you can listen to an audiobook at a high level and not using the text of this book? Here in Brazil, coffee is usually drunken for breakfast and also for dinner. We're really coffee junkies.
Hi, Annemarie it’s been a while since I participate in your videos. I hope you are doing fine. Can you please also make an video about how to place an order over the phone I always get nervous to do it. My choice of coffee will be mocha latte. And I think I pronounce Mocha differently :) Maybe that’s why sometime they don’t understand when I order a coffee.

When you buy food at restaurants or food markets in Singapore, they always ask "Having here or take away?" instead of using "Is it for here or to go?". I wonder if these expressions are common in the US, too.
Those are not as common in the U.S. but they may be used in another English-speaking country.
