For those who are not familiar with the movie - she's dancing in 2 different ways here - one as Ganga who has no dance practice and the other as Nagavalli, a local legendary character and was the royal dancer. Ganga in her schizophrenic state makes awkward moves while in her imagination she dances exceptionally.

As gangai she has no finise, but as nagavalli she has that and much more.
But yes even as gangai her dance is beautiful, but I think that mostly comes down to direction. I mean it is a movie and we meant to be amazed here with this transformation. If as gangai she were to just plainly suck at dancing, the transformation would'nt be as powerful to audience. Rather it would come of just funny if she was bad at the dance.

I knew that Ma'am Shobana herself choreographed the dance but my argument still stands.
Had she danced horribly the power of the transformation would be ridiculed.
The audience would just end up laughing rather than being at awe at the transformation.
So yes she can't and definitely shouldn't have danced like a complete novice.

But yes I can make an informed opinion as to who was better.
Besides the topic here was never-who was better. It was about how this particular actress (ma'am shobana) performed.
But since you bring up the other performance. I must say, I agree that it looks too animated. I'm sure the other actress(jo) is talented, but here she kinda fails and comes off slight ridiculous. But the blame is not entirely her fault. I'm guessing she did what she was directed to do.

@Sonal RanpiseI think because of Rajnikanth that movie was made in a very commercial manner. Just felt it lacked the psychological and supernatural elements. Rajnikanth himself playing the King and the doctor whereas in the Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi version the doctor's friend and the husband of the girl on whose body the ghost has inhabited plays the King's character.

ghost, as seen in other remakes. Her expressions and body language convey a range of emotions, including confusion, sadness, ecstasy, and vulnerability. Her portrayal shows the psyche of a troubled person rather than a typical "chudel. And mayalum industry is so very forward in talking about mental illness at that time!! In the 90s!! Like wow🙏
Soundarya did not act like a possessed lady It was Vidya and Jyothika who acted like that
I'm a Tamilian and I will say Shobhana ji's performance extraordinary and fabulous. This is an art of perfection 🙏🙏🙏🙏 her dance, her elegance, her expressions WOW. Everything about this song is extremely beautiful and deserves 100s of National Awards! I really hope my dear Tamil people will start appreciating arts like this more. I agree Jyothika's performance in Chandramukhi was entertaining but it's far from being called as an art. This is an art. Shobhana ji is an apsara descended from the heavens.

I am from Karnataka. This movie was a masterpiece. I don't know Malayalam but still I can feel the awesome dancing performance by Shobana in this song. Kannada remake Apthamithra was also good with good dancing by Soundarya but Shobana was the best undoubtedly👌👌.
