In this video, Scott introduces a simple cycle pattern (1235) and explains how to transpose this pattern into all 12 keys. Cycle patterns can be used to expand your knowledge of the circle of 5ths, key signatures, and chop development.

Chop shop is a GREAT idea. Its what advancing intermediate players want. How to keep playing log lines and keep going. The pros when soloing just go on and on with these long non stop ideas and its what I want to get to.

I'm happy to add this exercise to my long work in progress which is going through all the major scales by thirds. CEG, DFA, EGB...etc. It takes a lot of time, but I'm keeping the faith that it will pay off down the road. It seems to me that this pattern will be very helpful to that endeavor. Thank you. What a cool hobby, but for those of us who don't have the time to dedicate our lives to the instrument (I mean hours everyday), we have to keep our minds disciplined to not compare ourselves to the professionals. Like playing tennis. It's fun to hit the ball, and play games.

Whew... you had me there for a moment. I thought you said psycho patterns. Your demonstrations of ways to practice proves a point many teachers make... that your practice should sound musical... even scales. I am a 70 year old late bloomer. I've been messing around with music all my life but now that I am retired I want to stop just messing and learn how to practice. Thanks for the video tutorials. Cheers bro

I thought you'd get a kick out of that.. psycho patterns. I wrote them out so I could practice them. I've been messing with a tenor for about five years. I have to start doing some work if I want to progress. I won't say I have mastered the flute but I play well enough that I can join in at the jazz jam. I won't take my sax though. What I usually do is turn on my favorite jazz station and play along. Lately I've been forcing myself to play scales also. Your pattern exercise is a good alternative to what I've been doing. Usually I just play the scales up and down and then the cord tones. Cheers mate.

This is a great exercise for me as a tuba player because this pattern is my basic ascending pattern for a walking bass line, I’ll just have to insert my descending pattern (1235 | 1765) .

Dope lesson on cycle patterns...bout to take a blank paper and write it out...of course use a metronome...nice point about running out of notes...I cant play that high on the register...lol...but of course if you showed me how to do it then that'll be another tool in the toolbox...plus this gives me an opportunity to smash the lower notes on the sax when you described to drop down in the register when you play the 4 as the new 1...I am definitely interested in skype lessons so I can learn how to smash out to r&b tunes, hip hop instrumentals, jazz standards that I cringe to but willing to learn that art, and reading notes on a music sheet like getting better on sight reading...I know...count to 4...but with all those dotted notes, 8th rests, and all kinds of black ink on the grid, my mind goes blank...thats what I wanna work on and cant go wrong with that...please keep sending vids like this and of course your lick tutorials...theyre dope too...and when I get the coins right in the bank imma sign up...keep up the great work and for inspiring me to open up my saxophone case and playing...literally in tears of joy sir...

Chop is a slang term for ability to play well and clean. "He's got great chops" ... .he plays really well with good technique.

This is way more cooler and informational that the triad vid..they are patterns to learn..ur chop vids are cool..have you thought about namm 2019? Some youtubers get sponsor n free trips just to play on their booth. I like face to face lessons..cause live sound..here is market yourself with other youtubers..you have the circle..keep using that..maybe simple chords..to harmonize..i just started playing..but played in h.s. been playing for 5 months..
I take courses with a 65 yrs old gangsta..lol..he keeps pushing scales n i want to learn patterns so I look around UA-cam...to figure out he's scales n I'll figure out patterns here..thanks..

For the cycle pattern, don't write it out unless you have too. Just think 1 2 3 5...4 (1 2 3 5). Start it off in easy keys like C, G, D, F etc. then when you are comfortable work on the harder keys.
This is a great practice pattern for the cycle of 4ths. Is there a pattern moving the other way for the 5ths? Thanks.
Yes, just go the opposite direction but start on the 5th and come down. So 5 3 1 (C) 5 3 1 (G) 531 (D) etc. You start on the 5 so you don't have a repeated note because the 5 is the 1 in the next chord.
Scott do you have any exercises that cover the entire range of each scale. I love this 1235 pattern for getting around the cycle of Fourths but leaving out some of the notes isn’t helping me get down my scales cold.

On the Alto Sax there are 5 half steps between each note shown when moving in both directions

Hey Gene. There is an F# & C# in the key of D. However, the C# is the 7th degree (note in) the D scale so it never gets played in this pattern, because the notes in the pattern are 1 2 3 5.
Only playing a couple of years and my music theory is weak, not sure i understand but thanks for your reply.

Gene, when you play the scale of D, the notes are: D, E, F#, G, A, B, C# and high D completes the cycle of 8 keys. If you play tbese notes, you will hear the familiar sound: do, reh mi, fah, so, la, ti (and) do. So, the key of D has 2 sharps (as I listed), F# and C#.
D is the first note in the scale, F# is the 3rd, A is the 5th. Hope this helps.

Your explanation on how to bounce between 2 different scales with this pattern is confusing at best
