- Luz, Amity, Grom night! It’s the episode Lumity shippers have been waiting for! Grom Night is here, and while it’s not exactly the traditional prom night we know and love, it’s definitely an important event in a young witch’s life. But the dance floor isn’t the only place with twists and turns - this episode has some major plot developments that I didn’t see coming, so we’re going to unpack them all together! I’m Whitney Van Laningham, and today we’re breaking down Season 1 Episode 16 of The Owl House, Enchanting Grom Fright.

I don’t see the blight twins trying to stop amity’s crush on luz, more like teasing her (as siblings do) or even try to help her.
It might even be possible that telling their parents about it is a step to far from them, at least if they know what happened with Willow.

They do seem genuinely cool with Luz so I don't think they do anything beyond teasing Amity, it's there parents we should be worried about.
They forced Amity and Wilow apart, I don't want to imagine what they'll do when they find out about Amity's friendship with a human like Luz and her being friends with Willow again.
I feel like their trying to help but I’m sure they’ll wanna keep it low key since their parents probably won’t like amity with a human which if they show that I’m sure that will be a metaphor for homophobia. Over all I’m glad their treating it like it’s a normal thing unlike other shows like vultrons character.
They'd probably find out, use it as blackmail. Then just tease Amity about it.
Is no one gonna talk about how Amity drew the spell circle with her feet because that was BADASS and I need to see more of it
On a related note, though far more subtle, when Luz activates her ice glyph to attack the Internet Troll an actual spell circle forms on the ground around the card and is maintained into the next shot. Most of the time the circle is based on what Luz actually draws, but this time it appeared on its own as an enhancement.
That is part of the fun with a more loose magic style. Since the Islanders dont have to physically create the circles it leaves openings like this for fun animation bits.

I feel like luz feels like she doesnt deserve it because in the end she couldnt overcome her fear.

I honestly felt like it was so weird for her to just toss it away, but then I realized it was probably because the tiara meant different things for Amity and Luz. For Amity, it was a symbol of how she sort of stood up against her fear and also got to kinda go to Grom with Luz, so for Amity, the tiara was something positive and something she wanted to keep. But for Luz, that night she had to face her mom and it wasn't really something that she could easily feel better about. Amity felt better about her fear after Luz asked her to Grom, but there was nothing anyone could say to Luz to help her feel better about it. IDK just my theory.

Part of me feels that she did that as others wrote because she ran from her fears plus the night reminded her of how she is lieing to her mother. This she was happy to help Amity she wasn't feeling great about how things went or now having to admit the real fear and self guilt.
Amity also was affected by fear but I feel a critical part was the real Luz was there for Amity so even after the Grom shown and displayed rejection the real Luz was there to comfort and make Amity comfortable. Amity however didn't tell Luz the full details of her fear and when asked Amity tossed the paper instead of admitting (still fear inside of rejection and hide the full details).
I wonder if the real trick to beating a fear monster such as Grom is teamwork/friendship/partners to help empower the other plus sharing the burden vs going alone.
Eda DEFINITELY got chosen as Grom Queen. If you take a look at this episode when Luz tells Eda she's going to volunteer as Grom Queen for Amity, after laughing at her with King, Eda goes deadly serious and it kinda scared me. Stating that being Grom Queen is not something that Luz wants and I get the feeling that Eda experienced Grometheus first hand due to this being the most serious we've ever seen her act, and it was such a sudden flip of mannerism from joking to serious too! I'm not sure how this changes things but I think it's an interesting point. Thank you for reading, have a nice day :)

I actually think it was Lilith chosen as Grom Queen and Eda had to jump in and save her. I think that's why she was expecting to have to come to the rescue, because it's happened before. Plus idk who would've chosen Eda considering she was a troublemaker. Lilith on the other hand was a lot more popular and probably ahead of her grade considering she got into the Emperor's Coven

Two things: one, if you look closely at the letters, the font differs from each one
So it’s either multiple people or that one person trying to figure out Luz’s handwriting. (It also mentions “I made a friend” so it’s someone close to Luz or a spy)
Two: Edric and Emira’s greatest fear. I know it’s not relevant to the plot, but it develop their characters ever so slightly, and may come up in a later episode.
Edric: being alone forever (since we don’t see them hang out with anyone else, it’s clear he’s worried about Emira leaving him and possibly not finding an S.O. or another friend for...reasons, which is confirmed by Emira’s fear)
Emira: being stuck with you forever (It’s clear Emira loves her brother but is clearly afraid of just being one of the Blight twins and wants to be her own person)

Who Evers writing the letters also spelled luz name wrong and had to correct him or herself. This also means that it probably wasn’t a coincidence that luz ended up in the demon realm and someone’s pulling the strings. Some one who knew where the demon realm door would open that day

Shivang Parikh well she will probably have to temporarily go back and face her mum. Or she may be trapped there at the end of the season. Or she may need to get answers from her mum about her past. Ether way those letters are probably going to lead to something big down the line
When i first saw those letters, the first word that popped into my mind was "Doppelganger"...like you never know maybe when Luz entered Eda's magic door into the Boiling Isles the universe probably created a magical doppelganger of Luz to replace her...at least that's my theory.
The initial misspell is likely a way to make sure we know it's not Luz writing the notes.
Possibly, but Luz says that she thinks her mother means texts, so that wouldn’t really be necessary.
It’s also not a future version of Luz sent back in time so it’d be like she never left.

First thought, Eda sent a Luz clone to camp, like how Gus makes one of himself to take notes in class.
Second thought, Luz is sent back in time to the moment she left.

7:14 I doubt that Ed & Em will discourage Amity’s feelings for Luz (other than mercilessly teasing her), this episode we also got their greatest fears. Ed’s afraid of being alone forever and Em’s afraid of being stuck with Edric forever (which could just be some sass given they spent the entire time at Grom together, or that could be part of the twins in depth backstory). They truly seem to care about Amity (& Luz!), and want her to be happy, plus if it’s Ed’s greatest fear why would he want to inflict that on his younger sister?

I think the form the Grom took, before it changed into Luz's Mom, is meant to represent Eda. You can see parts of her hairstyle in it's smoky black appearance and Luz did say that she was afraid of Eda underestimating her earlier in the episode. So, I think Grom was latching on to that fear, before it decided to transform into something else.
The Grom's true form is probably that thing with a bunch of eyes, pointy horns and that huge mouth that we saw near the end.

Whitney might be thinking a little too close to home on this one. I think the most likely explanation for who's really been sending Camilia the fake letters is the boss or a staff member of the "Reality Check Summer Camp", where Luz was actually supposed to be spending the summer instead of a parallel universe. I figure that the manager is possibly corrupt and when Luz didn't show up at camp, he/she assumed she ran away and started forging the letters to her mom to as a cover-up and also to buy some time for them to look for Luz. This whole letter situation probably has nothing to do with someone on the Boiling Isles and will most likely be revealed in the season one finale; and to a very furious Camilia no doubt. ✉

That honestly makes me so happy. Me being bisexual myself, it feels nice to see a character with a different sexuality other than gay or lesbian. Don't get me wrong, it's great to see gay and lesbian characters but i also think it's important to have other characters who are bisexual, pansexual, asexual, etc ☺️

The chemistry between those two was so adorable! And the dancing scene with Lumity was the best animation the show has had so far! My heart soared when I saw them together. I hope their relationship continues to grow, even if they never get romantic 😊

Yes the Grom starts off as owl Eda but once it fully forms it becomes her mom. Possibly meaning Luz is afraid of owl Eda but knows and trusts Eda enough to be a fully developed fear.
Amity and luz are adorable and i love how their realtionship grew. Those two queens rule ❤️. Also luzz is learning more magicc. Its so great shes going out of her way to find glyphs hidden in the natural world around her. I wonder if shes the only one who can see those glyphs. Maybe its eda sending the letters? I just love the mystery behind whats happening. I cant wait for the next episode. I hope luz realizes amity’s feelings for her.

I don't think it is honestly. I don't think the camp would do this. Besides why would they? To avoid a bad reputation or to keep the money Luzs mom spent on the camp? Honestly I sure HOPE the camp would be more concerned about a child's safety then those two thing. Besides with how important they impiled the letters to be , it would be very disappointing if it turns out that was really the case ((in my opinion anyway.))
I'm thinking its Emperor Belos , who I believe might be Luz's dad. I believe that he found out Luz now in his world and for some reason doesn't want her too leave so since he knew her mother wouldn't allow this and he knew she would start getting suspicious if she wasn't hearing from Luz . So he decided to start writing her letters to make it look like Luz was actually at camp instead of in his world.
Beside if this is true and Emperor Belos really is Luz's dad, that would explain why she has the ability to use magic especially in the way that she has too. Since she's only half a witch she can't use magic the way full witches can so she has to use it the way that she does because of that.
@@taylortonkin7253 It's entirely possible that the camp normally sends fake letters to the parents, taking away the kid's phones when they arrive. I'm afraid not every camp has the best intentions of their campers at heart and some teaching them to be mentally disturbed, causing them to often committing suicide or die of OD. Naturally such camps wouldn't advertise that part and likely wouldn't want the kids telling their parents about what goes on there.
Just want to point out that when gorm is blowing up, and Luz and Amity are holding hands, you can see a heart shape right below their hands.

I think this refers to Ida the Owl lady and her sister. They were once good friends the torn apart by different goals. Ida has a owl curse and it could be possible that her sister has a curse that we dont know about.

@@jascrandom9855 you know... it most likely will. Disney has made HUGE steps in the right direction with LGBT representation, and this episode is the prove of taht but... I really don't think they would go that far, because even if this episode had a lot of high key gay subtext, it can still be interpreted as a really close friendship so... yeah I really don't think they would that far and confirm it in the season finale. Plus Disney seems to like slow burn romances anyway, just like in SVTFOE and Kim Possible.

Edit: that dance scence is remarkable and Amity's interaction with Luz is so sweet that its make me diabetic. Overall a very well done episode in tearm of character development and plot progress, and its certainly sastified us, shippers. Well done Dana, well done.
‘Mud’ could also mean ‘bad history’ in that lore /riddle. And the dance Scene was amazing, so Smooth and Fluent. They were incredible with the Animation.
It has to be Eda, she’s definitely grown attached to Luz as she constantly refers to Luz as “her kid”. However I think it’s because Eda cares about luz and maybe sees herself in luz because they’ve both got in trouble for being different and different opinions on things. So if Eda is doing it I think it’s purely for Luz so she can continue to learn magic and be with people who understands Luz’s eccentric mind.
When I first saw this episode I got really freaked out that maybe it is all a dream or a story Luz is making up and Luz is actually at the camp after all. However, when I looked at the letter, it seems very unlikely to be Luz: the misspelled name and how she’s “enjoying it” especially since she was “learning about mortgages”. Which is another reason it’s more likely to be Eda - she knows most about the human realm and so can make up actual things that would be realistic.
The last idea I had was that it’s someone inside the camp who is pretending to be Luz, maybe they’ve known Luz before, or they like Luz’s mom and pretends to be Luz to make up for their own parental issues. It’s possible but I can’t imagine them having another character from the human realm
I think it being Eda is unlikely as I don't think she knows what a mortgage is or enough what human camps are like to fake such letters. If you paid attention to how she labeled her "products" it's clear she doesn't really know about human stuff and part of why she needs Luz is to tell her what these things are.
Narutonarutonaruto85 fair enough, I am inclined to agree with the latter part of your statement. However there are some things that appear in both worlds, I feel like that would include mortgages, taxes, certain jobs, and lessons. Also, Eda is one of the few people who actually know that Luz was supposed to be at the camp. And because of the leaflet that Luz had in the first episode, Eda could have easily read it and used some of the things in there to describe what’s happening in the camp.
@@ziggyzoo9335 True. I have looked into the origins of mortgages and they have been around for a while. I could see them being a thing on the Boiling Isles. Although Eda doesn't strike me as the type of person to pay mortgages and taxes. There are some other things Eda might not know is normal, such as kids chasing birds, which was in one of the other letters.
Although I can't completely rule out Eda sending the letters. I'm still not up for the theory that Eda intentionally lured Luz into the portal, but if Luz can only get text and WiFi while the portal is open that means Eda had opened it that first night after Luz decided to stay.
Still there is the issue of the camp not calling Camilla when Luz didn't show up. They likely should of done so before Eda would of thought to act.
While there are some parallels between Earth and the Boiling Isles I question Eda's understanding of the human postal service enough to work the mailing system. A best she would send Owlbert to deliver the letters Harry Potter style, but they would still need to know where Luz lives.
While it wouldn't be completely out of character for Eda to do it anyway there is the question of why bother? She could just have Luz write the letters herself as part of the cover. Granted this episode showed Luz was reluctant talk to her mother outside of emojis she was clearly willing to do so in the first episode. The letters also seem unnecessary as aside from the phone Camilla has no way of bringing Luz back home, and if she is aware of phone then that would be enough to convince her things are going well, aside from the camp contacting her. Still if anyone on the Boiling Isles was faking the letters it most likely is Eda.
Largely the issue stems from a question I had since the first episode. What happens when the camp calls and tells her they don't have Luz?
Man watching LGBTQIA awareness evolve while being an animation fan has been a trip. Going from the last minute reveal in Korra, to quick instances and a twist in the Loud House, to tons of LGBT side characters in Steven Universe, to the main characters in shows like this one. And what I like about Lumity and She-Ra is that it's becoming more natural.
The reveal wasn't a reveal because, "Surprise! She's gay!" The reveal was very natural. If you swapped either, or both, with a man, it wouldn't have changed a thing. Now, imo, the next step is a show where the main character rejects someone who's attracted to them in that way but still wants to be friends because they're not straight or they're not LGBT. I feel like it's a very realistic, and necessary, topic to introduce to family animation. That it's ok not to be attracted to someone because you can't help your orientation. Maybe even have an initial arc where they try to make it work.
Kipo And the Age of Wonderbeasts had a subplot like this :-) You should check it out if you haven't. It's really good!
Technically Luz didn’t friend zone Amity since she didn’t know that is was her Amity wanted to ask. Its comparable to saying your mom said you can’t go out to get ice cream without even asking her

Consider: Lillith was chosen as Grom Queen and Eda had to jump in and save her. I think that's why she was expecting to have to come to Luz's rescue, because she's had to do it before. It was dangerous enough that Lillith couldn't handle it on her own, which justifies Eda's reaction to Luz wanting to take Amity's place as Grom Queen. Plus idk who would've chosen Eda considering she was a troublemaker. Lillith on the other hand was a lot more popular and probably ahead of her grade considering she got into the Emperor's Coven.

i think the “mud and feathers” are the mud that luz and ammity fell in and the feathers ammity was covered in in the next scene.
There's a theory that the mud portion of the message refers to Lilith. Which would make the giant worm creature in the intro sequence Lilith's curse form.
I think hexide is the only school having to deal with grom, if i remember correctly it has something to do with the schools history

I am hopeful that they can make Luz and Amity a couple. Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network have a good list of shows that show great representation and progressive writing with characters and story. And now it’s Disney’s turn to be a part of that light take part inclusion for the LGBT. And here is a great opportunity, not sure what they would do for the Lumity relationship at the end of the series but we’re still on season one. I am not asking for a lot though I would like to see great relationship here. Luz and Amity have a great dynamic, and I want to see it grow. I’m very curious to see how Luz will grow her feelings for Amity, there’s definitely a lot to like about her. So Dana Terrence give us your BEST!💖🏳️🌈

I think that this series is amazing. Not only do they have good plots for each episode, and they know what they're doing with character development, but honestly the animation is amazing (And I don't just mean the dance/fight scene) the expressions that the characters have, their reactions are so realistic and truly show what they're going through right on their face, you really have to appreciate that.

i honestly believe luz is bi, i see a lot of me in her when i comes to those things. I'm kinda worried about the letters tbh. im definitely happy about lumity, but this new plot device has been living in my mind rent free.
I love how this show ramps up the animation for fight scenes. That dance was gorgeously animated.

I have a theory that if Ed and Em find out they might discourage the fact Amity has a crush on a human as a way to protect her from her parents. They might be jerks some times but they were generally helping Amity with her magic so they might just be teasing her as older siblings.
I really hope that the ship isn’t too one sided. Hopefully they’ll have Luz at least acknowledging it rather than it being totally unrequited

I don’t know if you asked since I didn’t finish the video yet but I think the thing Amity was afraid of was herself which is sorta like the LMP animatic. She’s afraid to be her true self and maybe she thinks she’ll lose everything she’s ever worked for if she was to be her true self.
I hope this isnt offensive, but in my opinion The Owl House is better than Stevan Universe.

My money is on Luz and Amity being together at the end. Luz is going to slowly figure out that Amity likes her, and Amity is going to give a huge FU to how her parents have been treating her. Things are not going to be moving fast, but I'm sure we'll see them together.
I also think a nonsense Valentines episode showing off the other couples would be cute. The Owl House is going to explore the complexities of a same sex relationship, why not a side quest to other couples? I wouldn't mind seeing what those boys do on dates.
Someone who has illusion magic, and who has access to the human world, Gus is amazing at illusion magic. He is also obsessed with the human world, and would probably know how they write letters and deliver mail. As for access to the human world he can steal eda’s door he’s one of luz best friend and can probably get into the owl house pretty easily. He goes to school with her so he can probably mimic her handwriting. But you got me beat on how he wouldn’t know how to spell her name.

My initial thought for feathers and mud was something symbolical. Like feathers representing something light/sensitive/fragile and mud something more dark/deep/messy/unwanted
I for one, completely feel Willow's fear of ladybugs. Once those little buggers find a way inside they take over! The windowsills in my house are basically graveyards for the things. I remember one time in high school a bunch got in and the whole west side of the building's ceiling was COATED. (It should be noted that this happened in a much smaller building separate from the main building, but the point stands.)
I want to rule out Willow, Gus, and Amity as suspects as it seems unlikely they would have access to a portal that would allow them to do this sort of thing. King doesn't seem clever enough. My first thought was Eda, but the letter mentions mortgages and Eda's knowledge of the human world seems sketchy at best. I don't think she would know enough about what that camp is suppose to do to fake a letter like that.
The most logical explanation is that the camp is the one sending the letters. They clearly haven't told her that Luz hasn't shown up, something they should of done on the first day before she sent that text message. Eda wouldn't of known enough to do that then. This might be a cover up to hide the fact they are missing a kid. However I'm worried the camp normally takes away all phones and other electronics to cut contact with the outside world, sending fake letters so the parents don't worry about them. Due to some error who ever is sending them didn't realize Luz was missing.
There could be some magic explanations. For example a shape shifter is fleeing the Boiling Isles and ran into Luz on the way to Eda's portal, magically copying enough of her memories to fake it. Another thing could be the camp is up to something shady for someone on the Isles, such has harvesting magic from kids. It's implied that Luz has a lot of magic. Maybe that's normal for Earth kids, but they lack a way to use it so they are unaware.
While it might seem boring, which means the show likely won't go that route, I do think someone at the camp sending the forged letters is the most logical explanation.

Not going to lie. LITERALLY just saw this episode. I loved both the action and emotional bits. But when those letters were brought to the table I lost it. It actually gave me serious chills unlike anything I have ever seen. The reason it creeps me out so much is partly due to the serious lack of info we have about them. More importantly I was not expecting that at all!
I just assumed the letters were written by the camp Leader so the mother won't asume she's not at camp😂
Random thing: What if Luz’s Mum was a witch. That would be cool and could also explain how Luz might have been lured to the Isles.

Well, one theory goes that Camila was actually the basis for the Azura books before deciding to live out her days in the human world. It's based in part on Azura having a similar skin tone to Luz's mother. It gives Camila a reason to consider sending Luz to a 'reality check' camp when the latter shows an interest in the fantastical. It would also, btw, explain why Azura's sidekicks look so much like Eda and King, because they ARE Eda and King. Lastly, it would give credence to the idea that Eda might be the one writing the letters to cover for Luz, and knows where to deliver them in the human world. But it would also mean that Eda knows more about Luz and her family than she is letting on, which might bite her in the ass in the second season when Luz and Camila both discover it.
This episode shows that amity probably has feelings for luz and some ones sending letters to luz mum. That means that it probably wasn’t an accident that luz ended up in the demon realm and someone’s pulling the strings
Them combining magic is basically a love confession like fusions in Steven universe also both of their magic was somehow enhanced when they were dancing together(the abomination was bigger and luz’s plant was a tree far from the small flower in the beginning)Also the animation was amazzzzing

Honestly I thought that the letter thing was that Luz went to the Boiling Isles but some manifestation of her is still in the human world, like 2 Luzs and the human Luz doesn’t know of Luz being in the Boiling Isles and when the Owl (Owlbert) took her book she got it back and went to camp. Like some dimensional crossing
I can definitely see Amity’s parents trying to put an end to Amity’s crush on Luz but for Ed and Em, I see them teasing Amity relentlessly and if Luz and Amity ever do get married, I can see Ed on the piano and Em singing the softer version of WAP while Eda vibes to it in the background :>
