But some of those Bb4s definitely show that she is on her way. C5-D5: This is where they start to diverge. Lara's vowel shaping and placement start to overwhelm Ailee slightly. Ailee's resonance lags quiet a bit behind Lara's here. Interestingly, they seem to be most equal at the D5 as Fabian Fans chose Lara's chestiest D5s for this video. Eb5-F5: This is where Ailee's chesty mix starts to really kill her. A lot of tension from her, even though the notes are supported. Lara's lighter mix allows her to preserve ease and massive resonance, especially at E5. Lara clearly sounds more open and vibrant. F#5-G5: Nothing to say here. Ailee does NOT support here; Lara resonates here. That's all.
I just want to add that Ailee's first G5 and second F#5 are supported...it wasn't really intentional, it was a fluke, but supported nonetheless. Other than that everything above F5 is strained yea.

I think the Korean public demands displays of virtuoso high singing at the expense of vocal quality and transmission of emotion. They are given what they want by Ailee and Sohyang. Early in her career Lara had a somewhat harder tone, so Ailee's voice may also soften over time.If so, she will be very good indeed.
Frank Birch For Ailee, I think it was a lot to do with her chesty mix. From A4 to B4 she sounds very bright, warm, and open. As she ascends 5th octave, she starts to push more and that creates some tension. Her notes are well supported till F5 nonetheless but the technique is not ideal; it tires her out and produces this sharp sound you mentioned. As for Sohyang, her belting technique is flawless. It's probably just her tone that some people can't stomach.

Even when theyve sung classics like I have nothing, bridge over troubled water, etc. I love the songs by the original singers, but not the covers of these two respective vocalists. When I listened to Lara sing Je suis malade, however, the VERY first time, I completely broke down. It could be her incredible ability to really emotionally connect with any song she sings, but her vocal ability is the purest definition of 'music to my ears.'
IMO it's not true that Korean public demands displays of virtuoso high singing, it's just some youtuber experts. Some of the true vocalists/singers that are well-known and loved in Korea are Yun Bok Hee, Deul Geuk Hwa, Lee Sun Hee, you may want to check them out

Definitely Lara, her voice just don't sounds so pitchy in all her range, fully rounded voice (control) and deep powerful tone. the G5 at broken vow climax best demonstrate her techniques where it is consistently supported and rise till that note, compared with Charise one moment in time G5, that is how it is like demonstrated by Ailee. Maybe Lara is a soprano so it takes not much of tension for her to execute that powerful G5, I prefer her tone more, in terms of emotion I will give a vote for Ailee.
I suggest, the next video you should compare mid belting between Lara and Morissette Amon, vocal type is same, and their resonance is out of the planet! Im sure! But this video Lara wins 100%

Her only very developed register is her head voice, the girl can go off in that department , if we compare her head voice in Korea is on top not everyone got B5 . Both's mid-belts are comparable. However, when it comes to higher notes, Lara sounds headier but with more pleasant open throat sound. Ailee sounds chestier in higher notes but with more narrow and forward bright sound which is less pleasant and pushy.
Lara's mix is brighter and she uses more head resonance, she's not necessarily heady. Ailee has distorted vowels and an overly chesty mix which blocks her from resonating property in 5th octave.
Fabian Fans Lara's high notes are not really bright after her prime. Yeah, for me, she sounded brighter and more forward with head resonance during her Carpe Diem era. She indeed sounded very chesty and pushy at that age. Nevertheless, her high notes have become headier and headier with her age to preserve vocal health. At Pure era, her mix was still quite balance and bright. However, after that she started to sound more headier than ever but with muffled and less brighter high notes, which is pleasant and unsatisfying to hear than before. I think all these have to do with vocal compensation or trade-off if you get what I mean. We may need to perform spectrum analysis to further support the points.

BAZISSINO 94 Lara's voice is not bright doesn't mean she mixes with her chest. I never meant that at all. It is totally irrelevant. The reason why Lara doesn't sound bright to me because her placement is not so much forward and narrow as compared to most of the Asian singers, typically we can hear from singers like Ailee and Sohyang. Being honest from the bottom of our heart, do you think all these twangy belters sound pleasant to you? Yeah, they do belt with proper vocal technique, but some of them sound screamy and distortedly bright. In other words, too much emphasis on upper harmonic which is around 3000hz and above can cause ear fatigue to us when we listen to these high frequencies as our ears are particularly sensitive to higher frequency range. Lara doesn't have this kind of issue. Her mix is headier and that's what makes her to have optimal resonance without sounding twangy. Besides, it is also because of her open throat technique that dilutes the brightness from forward and narrow placement. Moreover, Western singers are born with larger vocal anatomy that allows them to sing like a drum or horn. Unlike Asian singers who sound more like trumpet or flute or piccolo.

Her coordination is stronger, her vowels are rounder, and the overall depth she achieved is quite a lot more impressive than what SSY or Haeri could manage with their brighter approaches. Don't get me wrong, they're two of the best belters in Korea and definitely up there with the legends but when it comes down to it, Lara' depth is hardly comparable to anyone.

Ailee is a singer in progress. lara is an ARTIST. Thats the main dofference. Amd also Lara almost never fails in her entire career, Ailee goes out of tone few time is this video. ;)
Both's mid-belts are comparable. However, when it comes to higher notes, Lara sounds headier but with more pleasant open throat sound. Ailee sounds chestier in higher notes but with more narrow and forward bright sound which is less pleasant and pushy.
Lara's mix is brighter and she uses more head resonance, she's not necessarily heady. Ailee has distorted vowels and an overly chesty mix which blocks her from resonating property in 5th octave.
Fabian Fans Lara's high notes are not really bright after her prime. Yeah, for me, she sounded brighter and more forward with head resonance during her Carpe Diem era. She indeed sounded very chesty and pushy at that age. Nevertheless, her high notes have become headier and headier with her age to preserve vocal health. At Pure era, her mix was still quite balance and bright. However, after that she started to sound more headier than ever but with muffled and less brighter high notes, which is pleasant and unsatisfying to hear than before. I think all these have to do with vocal compensation or trade-off if you get what I mean. We may need to perform spectrum analysis to further support the points.
yongsua1989 it just normal after a certain age sopranos change a bit in their ration of mixing it nature the cords age as well... She even talk about it in interview, Sohyang do the same currently.
For the brightness I don't get what you're trying to say it a placement of she's not bright it means she's placing her mix to low in her chest like Ailee which is not true, Lara has always been bright
BAZISSINO 94 Lara's voice is not bright doesn't mean she mixes with her chest. I never meant that at all. It is totally irrelevant. The reason why Lara doesn't sound bright to me because her placement is not so much forward and narrow as compared to most of the Asian singers, typically we can hear from singers like Ailee and Sohyang. Being honest from the bottom of our heart, do you think all these twangy belters sound pleasant to you? Yeah, they do belt with proper vocal technique, but some of them sound screamy and distortedly bright. In other words, too much emphasis on upper harmonic which is around 3000hz and above can cause ear fatigue to us when we listen to these high frequencies as our ears are particularly sensitive to higher frequency range.
Lara doesn't have this kind of issue. Her mix is headier and that's what makes her to have optimal resonance without sounding twangy. Besides, it is also because of her open throat technique that dilutes the brightness from forward and narrow placement. Moreover, Western singers are born with larger vocal anatomy that allows them to sing like a drum or horn. Unlike Asian singers who sound more like trumpet or flute or piccolo.
yongsua1989 wow I didn't expect that length of response but I totally agree Sohyang use much twang and emphasize her upper mix but when she try to belt an B4 it sound weak not resonant compared to her Eb5-B5 , Lara /Whitney /David Trained their mixes with more depth more openess more rounded vowels
TBH I'm not much fan of the twang I feel like it doesn't allow much freedom and cause distortion in intonation it really Free sopranos above a certain note but I don't think it should be relied on that much, it nice to see there's people who really knows what they're hearing in all those Strain stans.

Ailee has a C7, and i dont think that this video make justice to ailee tbh the lara's notes are long but ailee has impecables transitions when she change of register. And you put several times the same note that she reaches in a performance but to Ailee you only put a piece where it reaches the note I think it´s not fair for people who dont know her. Lara is better than both, at her best. Her coordination is stronger, her vowels are rounder, and the overall depth she achieved is quite a lot more impressive than what SSY or Haeri could manage with their brighter approaches. Don't get me wrong, they're two of the best belters in Korea and definitely up there with the legends but when it comes down to it, Lara' depth is hardly comparable to anyone.
