I worked at a sandwich factory for a run of 8 miserable summer weekends about 25 years ago when I was a student. The process hasn't changed, and it's just as bleak and depressing as it looks. I remember things like the smell of cold hamburger gherkins, the monotony of scooping egg mayo onto a slice of bread hundreds of times over, my hands freezing despite our disposable gloves as I pulled handfuls of chilled diced chicken from a blue bag, and only getting two 10 minute breaks a day where we could have vending machine tea or coffee, and a free surplus packaged sandwich. I wanted to quit after one day, but my mum told me it was only for the summer and to stick it out. It wasn't till after I'd gone back to uni that she confessed she'd once taken a part time job there and walked off after only 3 hours.
