As an African, I hate to hear this, but it’s the God damn truth. Not all African countries of course as there are some bright spots. Take Somalia where I am from: the Italians left in 1960 and handed over a beautiful viable state with adequate infrastructure to build upon. Fast forward nearly 50 years later, Somalia is an utter hellhole with death and destruction everywhere you go, a country with not even a single operating factory as they have been destroyed and looted, the people who are starving on fertile lands (in the South), a corrupt, inept, tribal “government” which barely controls the capital city with the assistance of African Union troops and a country rampant with armed gangs and terrorists labelling it the most dangerous country in the World. Extremely sad.

One thing I respect the Chinese for, is their “it will take generations to make things right” mindset. Too many third world countries are immigrating to a functional system instead of fixing their home. He's grossly oversimplifying things. The Belgians, like other Europeans in Africa, went to great lengths to not share any form of education with locals. Any infrastructure that was built was done solely for the purpose of extraction, not national development. On leaving the country, they undermined local leadership by having a promising Prime Minister assassinated in coordination with the CIA, and then propped up puppet dictators that were no different in practice than the thieving Europeans that preceded them. There are so many factors working against the Congolese people, but I guess it's much easier to just blame them for their own situation.

    • @yeeyee5057
      @yeeyee5057 25 днів тому +31

@@yacobz Bruh the Chinese had it worse what do you mean. The Europeans fucked around in China, imported several thousand tons of opium into the country and extracted billions of wealth out of China with the unequal treaties, but since they "technically" didn't colonise it like Africa they didn't even bother developing the place before they left. Even worse was that during the early half of the 20th century China was plagued with famines, civil wars, floods, and warlordism, and Japan then invaded and killed as many Chinese as the Nazis killed Soviets. Then when Mao finally won he fucked up so bad around 50 Million people died from his inept policies. China only really began to grow after he died after 1976.
You can't honestly believe that African countries, which were relatively quiet with few wars during colonial rule, and were granted independence around 20-30 years before Mao's death, were unable to improve, and in South Africa's case, gotten worse?

We're creating even more problems that way and neglecting discussing the real issues, wasting our energy on trying to solve all the wrong problems.
Nothing will be achieved if we keep sniping at eachother from a distance, bringing up past grievances, blaming everyone else and then insinuating everyone is a racist. As a Vietnamese person, after every period of colonization or war in Vietnam, the country has examined and adapted what those experiences had given them and that’s why there is such a stark contrast between the Vietnam of just a few decades ago and the Vietnam of today. Sure, being colonized or imposed on by a foreign power is never something you’d be looking forward to, but there’s always something one can gain in even negative situations such as that, and I think countries such as Vietnam, China, India, etc… have understood that well and been rewarded for that.

It also wasn't his fault his parent's generation destroyed all that technology, infrastructure, agriculture, industry and law the colonists left behind, but that doesn't mean he can just ignore that fact. They sang and danced and celebrated but the next day they ate the seeds from the bags instead of planting them. My teacher's team sent furniture for the local school, the africans sang and danced and celebrated but they never assembled the furniture and ended up using the planks as firewood. They sent a motorcycle to help them travel long distances to other villages, they sang and danced and celebrated but one of them took the wheels for his handcart. Finally they sent a solar powered pump for the well, they sang and danced and celebrated but at some point the button became disloged and fell into the command box. All they had to to was open the box and put the button back in place. They never did. I am a Chinese working in Filipino for years, have to go back in last month since you know our countries had some "disagreement".
Filipinos always think they are so open-eyed and open-minded, but from what I know, they are so close-minded, sometimes make you speechless, even a few Filipinos go outside of their country, see things, know things, they either stay there rarely go back to Filipino or go back but choose to do nothing about it.
When I was there, my company build so many hospitals, power plant, power grids, the Filipinos we train know how to maintine them, but they never improve or learn from the projects they are working in.
I say these because I still love Filipino people and all my friends there, but ffs please do some real changes, your people and country could be so much better.

Didn’t y’all cry about the United States not respecting y’all’s freedom or something back in the 1800s? Yeah I found some kids homework while at work and the lesson was about how our president at the time, and I’m not making this up, was being oppressive and all the bad things because (as a white man) he said that the Philippines needed to be protected and governed by the United States (summarizing) and how the Philippine whoever was like “nuh uh, we deserve to govern ourselves, you’re being racist” and the kids answers to the questions were “president is saying they shouldn’t belong to themselves and the Philippine guy is cool and against colonialism” it was the wokest trash ever and if that’s at all the attitude the Philippines has towards them being lifted out of 3rd world country hood by the United States, that by all means maybe they just deserve it. They been doing it to themselves for hundreds of years it seems

In Chinese culture, if you like people then you are honest with them. Even brutally honest. So in the Chinese guy's head, he _is_ being kind to him, because he's telling him the truth. The fact that the truth hurts is not a reason not to say it: in some ways, it makes it more important to say.
Think of it this way: if your friends don't tell you that your new hairstyle looks bad then you will go out and strangers will laugh at you. It's important that your friends say "No, this is a bad haircut and you look stupid" so that you will not be embarrassed by others.
He is being kind. Just not necessarily in the way you'd expect.

The movie maker deliberately distorts the translation in order to convey what the movie wants to say about Africa, through the mouth Chinese, instead of reflecting what it was actually being said by him, so the Chinese gets the blame of not being politically correct and not the Belgians making this movie.
Throughout the conversation, the guy was being respectful while showing genuine regret that Congolese people didn't grasp the opportunity after their independence to achieve greatness. There wasnt any sarcasm or scolding at all.
I first watched this muted and only read the subtitles, and I had the same reaction as most people in the comment section. "Man this guy is not holding back anything roasting the poor black dude, brutal". But then I couldn't resist knowing what was actually said, being fluent in English and Chinese, I watched video full again, this time listening what they said, and it shocked me. It was so different from reading the subtitles.
Instead of roasting, the guy was actually telling the black dude "you guys had a much better start than the Chinese people, and had great opportunity, but you guys didn't take advantage of it, and it was so unfortunate. One of the reason could be that you guys have different mindset for consumer spending, but your dance was really nice tho".
I hope more people that got selected by the algorithm can see this instead of being the victims of the nefarious agenda hidden in this movie

Among the (mainland) Chinese, there is no such thing as being political correct. They say whatever they want about other people (unless it e.g. concerns their own government or other people holding the purse strings who are higher up). This also makes them terribly direct and honest. This is the characteristic about that, which I can appreciate. People sometimes need to be confronted.
