      So silly. Tell that to all the stupid foreigners who spend $100s of dollars on Jordan shoes so they can scalp them later or praise Kobe Bryant like he's Nelson Mandela. People like stars. I'll give you one thing, though. I bet a lot of people who weren't from America wouldn't even think to watch such a one sided game (that this was supposed to be) unless they were Lithuanian.

    The narrator calls the Russians the USA's "old enemy" (in reference to their Olympic rivalry with the USSR team) but Lithuania was just as much a part of that "old enemy" as Russia. Lithuania made up less than 2% of the Soviet Union's population but contributed 5 players to its 12-man roster when they won the gold in 1988. The country has always been fanatical about the sport. Lithuanians are born with basketballs in their hands.

      Ditto. Man, that would have been epic. Honestly, I was happy when our Dream Team got beat in 2004. The Olympics lost something when the professionals were officially allowed to compete.

    • @kut52
      @kut52 7 років тому +9

      Not really, Olympics should always be about the very best coming toe-to-toe. It may not always add to the competition, but it also does not peak interest if you know that the best are not involved, somewhat like what happened in Pyeongchang 2018 in hockey - Germany ain't one of the two best teams in the world.

    Watch closely the game clock and the shot clock before Lithuania's Sarunas Jasikevicius would have taken the 3-point shot at the buzzer. The shot would not have counted anyway even if it had gone in because time already ran out. Anyway, it was a thrilling game that Team USA won't ever forget. Kudos to the Lithuanians who nearly scared the life out of the stunned American NBA players.

    Ramunas Siskauskas was one of the best to ever play in Lithuania, but he had issues hitting those last-minute free throws. He missed not only in this game but the Euroleague final as well for 2 times I think. Anyway at these Olympics Lithuania showed that even team USA can be shaken and a few years later that's what happened when the USA only won Bronze. I think it's for the best as now Americans take the Olympics a bit more seriously than before.

    I was at a bar in New Jersey watching that game. If you didn't have a drink in your hand in those last few moments, you weren't going to get it right away. The bartenders and patrons alike were riveted to that tiny television. When the Lithuanian got that final shot off his fingertips barely beating the buzzer and missed, a huge collective sigh of relief went through the place. Moral of the story, no fair contest is guaranteed, which is why you play the game.

      I am looking at that moment repeatedly, and clearly Lithuanian player do not have any attempt to pull Garnet or put hands on him. He is trying to come closer to ball but Garnet is sitting on floor and attempting to stop opponent by sliding on floor. Is absolutely clear that is Garnet who is making foul on opponent player. Incredible that is called foul against Lithuanian player.

    Even though Team USA still won gold that year, this game ended up revealing the growing cracks in USA basketball that would end up revealing themselves in the FIBA 2002 World Cup and most famously the 2004 Olympics: their complacency and their habit of underestimating opponents.
