Human Evolution: Crash Course Big History #6
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 чер 2024
- In which John Green and Hank Green teach you about how human primates moved out of Africa and turned Earth into a real-life Planet of the Apes. And the apes are people! John and Hank teach you about how humans evolved, and the sort of tricks they picked up along the way like complex tool use, big brains, and fighting. Our ancestors adapted to the grasslands of Africa and went through several iterations including Australopithecus, homo habilis, and homo ergaster/erectus. Our ancestors tamed fire, made pressure flake tools, and eventually smartphones.

Who else binges these videos just for the love of knowledge and not for finals😂
The best thing about the Internet is programs like this. I am a retired grandfather with a 2 year old grandson. When he gets a little older,we will be watching these courses together. And maybe have some cookies and milk too!!
That's great!
Brian Garrow awwww that's so adorable
Brian Garrow came for the learning left with the feelings
He may need to be older than that to comprehend this subject.
Love it!

Please do a whole mini series on human evolution! Its fascinating, and tells us A LOT about ourselves. Paleoanthropology is rich with interesting information. If entire university degrees can be dedicated to the subject, I'm sure a series could be figured out. Just something I would love to see!
Claire Haggett yesss
Hi Claire - I'm currently studying Evolutionary Anthropology and am going to be trying to make some podcasts or vlogs on human evolution over the next few weeks, it's not going to be Crash Course level of professional/ awesome but if you're interested in learning more about this send me a message on youtube and I'll send them to you as and when I upload them :)
Scarlett Marshall
"Over the next few weeks." It's been about 9 months.
Sad that new breakthrough human evolution discoveries are made every year that completely invalidates previous notions on the subject. I'm starting to believe we'll never know nothing about our origins
when i was in school, i got detention a LOT. and in detention, you were only allowed to use computers for “homework” so to entertain myself during these two hour long blocks, i’d watch these crash course videos as they technically counted as “homework” these videos saved teenage me from perhaps hundreds of hours of boredom. i may have been a regular in detention, but i was definitely the only nerd in detention. thanks crash course
6:17 Omg we've come a long way, I mean australopithecus had a hard time communicating and now we're hearing Hank speaking faster than I understand😂
"Humans are amazing."* looks at comments section *"Nevermind..."
+sune olivier Looks at the comment section any other animal have made ...... oh..... nevermind! Human stupidity is still way smarter then any other animal. Heck dogs are about as good in thinking as a 2 year old. Just having a painting that show a object and connecting that painting to a real object is far more advanced then most other animals can even dream of. Only the smartest of dogs can do that (pretty much the only other animal apart from humans) and just about every human 2 year old can do that.
sune olivier No you didn't. You dismissed that idea.
Never read the comments. Thats rule no. one.

@@naka8919 Chimpanzees are dumb and unsuccessful as a species though. Humans are slightly smarter and develop cities, have agriculture, make medicine, and developed more and new kinds of ways to kill their own species.
@@naka8919 you should probably take a primate course
@@naka8919 well chimpanzees are a more "successful" species than bonobos I guess but that's because there are several factors that contribute to that that are out of their own control. Like habitat, for one. There is more habitat readily available for them to take control over. Bonobos on the other hand are on the other side of the river and have a limited amount of land and face major population loss from humans that live in the same area. The killing and hunting of bonobos has been sanctioned by the military of the Congo, and it's the main reason for their population decline. But bonobos are not "dumb" nor unsuccessful, it's just different adaptations to different ecological situations. I won't argue that Chimpanzees are more successful, but being "dumb" isn't always a very educated claim on another species decline. The chimps have a slightly larger brain capacity, but it was the Bonobos who outperformed the chimps on the theory of mind scale and they at times have scored higher on intelligence tests. At the same time, Chimpanzees have outperformed in some areas and appear better at tool use. All I'm saying is that Bonobos aren't "dumb", there are socio-ecological pressures at play and they are important for shaping the differences between the two.
Humans are amazing, after millions of years we came about and so far we have come up with a lot of great ideas and inventions.
Then someone created the UA-cam comment section and negated all of that.
+HopperTheMCDoctor "Great" ideas... Well maybe if people would learn from mistakes things would be great D:
could not agree. more about UA-cam comment section
HopperTheMCDoctor no one is a human, and not everyone is great. some are.
Espaço Oculto "No one is a human".... Take those morning pills again, buddy.
First off evolution deals with the change in heritable traits of a population over successive generations...a biological population. That has nothing to do with socialism which is an economic theory. Stalins Soviet Union didnt even teach evolution and Hitler certainly didnt. North Korea doesnt. Apes does not refer to a single species. Our closest relatives are chimps and bonobos. Bonobos are peaceful. They dont ever kill...ever. One of our defining features is that we go to war with each other to kill each other. We are the only species that create weapons on a mass scale to kill one another. The twentieth century had 2 world wars where tens of millions of people were killed.. Humans are the most violent species on this planet in terms of large scale destruction. Ya we have an amazing ability to love and care for one another but lets not pretend we arent violent. No other species comes close to us.
I can't comprehend how this can possibly offend anyone. I feel empowered and inspired by my connection to the rest of life on Earth.
Seeing our actual place both in the large "map" and the even larger timeline of the universe can frighten a lot of people and make them feel small and unimportant.
I am more on theside of Neil deGrasse Tyson, i find it awesome that bits of the heart of stars now forms bits of MY heart and might go on to do so for billions of other lifeforms before the universe runs over with entropy and every process simply stops.
It's 2019. Still no James Franco
Saw the Sapolsky reference... mad respect.

I don't know why people argue about evolution. It's a fact. Theory's in science are not speculation they have massive amounts of evidence backing them up. Why would we argue about evolution when we have lots of evidence saying it's true?
BUT
BUT
THEORY
IT'S A THEORY
THEORIES AREN'T FACT BLAHBLAHBLAHBLAHBLAHBLAHBLAH
People argue about it because they don't see how it complies with their religion. They're confused, so just be patient with them.
heres an answer to that one: gravity is also a theory, i dont see you flying off into space - or…. you say "evolution is just a theory", i hear "i have no basic understanding of science"
The simple fact of the matter is that none of us have been there. Both sides provide a vast amount of evidence, however, on the internet the majority is young people. The majority of young people are humanists (atheists), making the opinions you see, very one sided. One of the best supports among creationists is archaeology. There have been close to zero finds of apes/man. Any that are, are quickly debunked as fakes. Where as the other side has carbon dating. This has been known to fail in the past but sides with evolution. For many people, this discussion hits home on the center of what a person lives for. I ask you to be respectful of each person's beliefs nerdfights. dftba
+Zurt, are you talking to me? Because I agree with you and believe in evolution...

@@jonathanjones770 In population genetics, fixation is the change in a gene pool from a situation where there exists at least two variants of a particular gene (allele) in a given population to a situation where only one of the alleles remains.
The most favorable numbers for evolution are that human and chimpanzee FIXED genomes differ by 30 million. Divide by 2 to get 15 million.

Honestly I can't believe some people still don't believe in evolution
I know right I think because most religious people are born into their religion so its hard for them to accept it is false
Not necessarily true. For your information, it wasn't Darwin that discovered the theory of evolution. H merely discovered the process by which species evolve. The theory was actually formulated in the 14th century by a Muslim scientist by the name of Ibn Khaldun.

If those guys back then could believe in it, then i don't understand why other religious fundamentalists cant believe in it. It's perhaps mainly their ignorance of science (quite obviously).

It's because we have evidence, while they don't. Teaching lies as 'facts' and facts as 'lies' is what Creationist Christians teach to poor, innocent children in some American private schools. It's NOT okay!
TheTTVCrew you can't get everybody to sit down and watch an organism evolve can you? We can only look at things that have already "evolved" we can't watching something evolve right now and we can't wait to see if something will evolve later on so yeah
I don't know how it is in America, but back home in the Middle East, people are split in 3 positions. The first one (this forms the overall majority) is that evolution is real, but doesn't apply to humans. God only made it look like humans were evolved from apes. The second is that human evolution is real and the third (less than 1%) is that there is no such thing called evolution. I personally couldnt care less if evolution is true or false. I for example take a neutral position and say that science should advance further before we say anythings as fact. I say this only to appease to those creationist idiots, and although i believe in human evolution, i don't understand what is the point if people believe in it or not. It won't allow us to reach the moon so who cares id people think evolution is false.

Now it’s time to look through the comments for creationists
A little copy-pasta of my comment from the last CCBH video:
Comments in videos such as this end up having very interesting comments sections:
50% people saying religious arguments are coming
25% atheists calling theists stupid
10% people pretending to be young-Earth creationists to make fights
10% Old-Earth creationists arguing for both sides
5% Young-Earth creationists making fights
Seems biased or made up on the spot after a browse.....
It's made up and slightly facetious, but based on my years of being involved in science discussion in UA-cam comments.
gruntdetonators They are pretty damn accurate.
Dylan Shapiro 42.7 percent of all statistics are made up on the spot.
UA-cam comments dictate that number three will have the most highly featured comments despite only making up 10%.
I absolutely love your videos and admire the effort you put into making those 15-minute "documentaries". It's amazing how I learn way more from your succinct vids than I would from watching an hour long NatGeo docu filled with innumerable ad-breaks and cliff hangers. If everyone watched a CrashCourse video everyday, or any other educational/scientific/philosohical video (Veritasium, SmarterEveryDay or any other of these UA-camrs) I honestly think the world would be a better place.
Keep up the good work, guys. We really do appreciate the effort, even if we do sometimes (okay, quite a LOT of time) occupy your comments section to wage our UA-cam wars (but hey, it's hard controlling our adrenal glands with our puny prefrontal cortex!)

For your birthday I'll jive you a jift, possibly a joldfish or a juinea pij.

Yeah, I get the gist of what you're saying. But you could also go to a geriatric home (unless you have an allergy to the aged), or maybe to the zoo to see the giraffes (unless you illogically cringe around giants). Though, I suppose you could watch a movie, maybe about the vigilante, Batman, or maybe The Fugitive, with Harrison Ford. It doesn't take much imagination to see that letters can produce different sounds. At least, if your mind is agile enough.
Oh shit, I didn't even think you were gonna reply, but yeah, I also get what you are saying and yeah, makes sense, plus I did some research and there is no rule on the pronunciation of acronyms so technically we're both right.
Honestly, the only reason I pronounce it 'jiff' is because I read an HTML design book when I was younger, and it said the creator of the format named it after the peanut butter. But I agree that both forms are correct, or at least acceptable. I just like joking about people pronouncing it wrong because most people use a hard 'g' sound.

Denying the validity of evolution in 2016 is unacceptable. It is indisputable fact. I love how religious institutions have to increasingly create more absurd explanations as scientists discover more and more. They've won many battles, but they've certainly lost the war.
+Justin Hopkins No, evolution is not an indisputable fact. It is a weak hypothesis and it does not account for many actual observations in field of biology. You need to listen to what the other side is saying today.
+jbooks888 but they all speak gibberish about a man in the sky that has infinite power but feels compelled to tell us what to do with our bodies...

Shug Lordis That is a stupid flamewar anyway. It often gets nowhere.
Creationism believe in a supernatural source of things. That is to say a source that transcendends the natural order and gave rise to it. Given that some enthusiasts are contending that language can give rise to an “evolution” that transcends genetics, well,, the Gospel of John begins with “In the Beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
@@JRobbySh no creationism refers to a very specific group of Christians who reject evolution and think the earth is 6-10,000 years old
@@jordancox8294 No so. In theology the term belongs to those who believe that what the first verses of Genesis say is consonant with scientific fact, as are the first words of the Gospel of John: In the beginning was the Word. That mind came before matter.
