How to find a stud without a stud finder in less than 10 seconds

This might be a silly question, but are the nails always in the middle of the wall stud? After finding the stud with the magnet do I need to drill a few 'test' holes to the right and left of the magnet to find where the stud begins and ends?

I do the same thing except i glue abt a foot of fishinf line to the magnet and let it dangle to the left or right of outlets...outlets are usually installed to the right on the stud so its an easy rule of thumb to search the left for magnetism. :) Good shit guy, good shit!
