Jeep has really lowered its standards if it's trying to compete with Land Rover which is owned by Tata Motors Group. Land Rover has a significant history of poor reliability so from that perspective Jeep fits right in. If Jeep is shooting for being a "status symbol" vehicle like Land Rover, Mercedes, BMW etc, then it's a huge mistake on Jeep's end. The Jeep brand has historically never been considered to be or categorized as a "status brand" and quite frankly they should avoid going down that path. Jeep was built on the rugged outdoors, go anywhere mentality something that really no other automaker could come close to. Jeep should go back its roots and build quality off-roaders that can go anywhere and stop mucking around in the status brand genre.

Thanks for your reporting - this confirms my suspicions.... To set this up; My son's 2018 Wrangler JLUR (Unlimited - meaning 4-door - Rubicon for those not familiar) has been problematic from the get-go. We bought it used w/ 47K miles for far too much in 2021 - the peak of used car pricing (price matched the mileage!). This was when he graduated college, and he needed new wheels to get to his new job because my old rusting Mazda 6 hatchback wasn't safe anymore. And, of course, he HAD TO HAVE A WRANGLER (was his life-long dream). It's all image to him - he'll probably never rock crawl with his new 35" tires and the electronic front anti-roll bar. Meanwhile, it's already had electrical issues, never mind the leaking right rear LED taillight it came with and eventually cost us $800 to replace. Starting out right away, we had an engine light where multiple dash lights came on, triggering many OBD II codes and system lockouts for stop/start, power steering, VSC and more. The Jeep dealer charged $350 to change a silly $20 CAN bus connector. I was convinced they knew what the problem was and fixed it in 10 minutes but charged us that much anyway. Grr! Had an engine light for "small vapor leak", and it ended up being the stupid charcoal canister purge valve. The canister on the older model JK was under the car, you didn't even need ramps. The new one requires rear passenger wheel removal, wheel housing splash guard removal, and pulling out the canister to access the valve. Another PITA. Had a random cylinder 3 misfire for a while. Changed that coil and plug, we'll see if that lasts. In the process of doing that I found oil seepage from seals around things poking out of the valve covers, meaning pressure build up, so I replaced the PCV valve (at about 70K miles and yes it was very sticky) which was foolishly located on the rear end of the passenger side valve cover, facing the firewall. That required lots of swearing, cuts on my hands, and an innovative use of pry bars and wood blocking to get enough forward pressure on the valve to compress the o-ring enough to be able to rotate the valve into position. TERRIBLE engineering. Oh, and I found a rodent chewed wire running from behind the battery toward the front of the bay. It was chewed near the positive battery terminal. The wires were wrapped in cloth-type electrical tape, and the red and orange wires inside were thin and the insulation fragile. Who knows what those wires were for. I had to strip, splice, solder and re-tape them. PITA. Now he's moved to San Diego, the engine light is back and so is the light showing a loose gas cap. I'm not there to work on it so off to the dealer if I can get him to actually make an appointment. We recently visited him out there, and noticed his AC was not cooling. He said "Oh yeah that started last week"... I poked around - the AC compressor spins by hand - with the engine off of course - so it's not seized. But the clutch does not engage even though the cooling system fans go into overdrive when the AC button is pushed. Seems electrical and it's not a fuse problem because I pulled the fuses specific to the compressor. The Jeep is at 75K miles now, and while poking around I noticed a flimsy little connector with thin gage wires at the compressor. Where the wires come off the harness, the weight of the short span of the wires causes a small kink where the wires are fitted on the upward facing end of the connector, and the wires are cracked and the copper exposed. Wiggling this wire with the AC on did not cause a change, so who KNOWS were the problem is. Anywho, there's a short synopsis of dealing with Jeep crap in a short 3 years. There's plenty more but no doubt most readers didn't get this far.

What's wrong with Jeep? They lost their way. To me, the last usefule Jeep was the TJ and XJ lines. After that, everything got to big and complicated. I've owned older Jeeps for years and we currently still have a 94 YJ. It's small, maneuverable, and off road oriented. Not to mention utterly reliable with the old pushrod 4.0 inline six. Pricing is the problem. I bought 2020 JL and there were deals a plenty and rates on three year financing were 1.99% at the time. Ending up getting like 6k off the price at year end close out. Was a happy clam. 4 years later and still love it. Not built terribly well but good enough for the price **I ** paid. It simply is not good enough for the current pricing. I wouldn’t even consider buying again at todays pricing as the value just isn’t there. It needs to be atleast 20% cheaper to be ballpark reasonable.
Bronco released certainly killed off a huge chunk of sales too.

Great vid, Jon. I think you hit all the points - I like to say they overshot the mark with their pricing. I'd read somewhere that they want to be Lexus/Land Rover in terms of perception and price point, specifically with the Grand Wagoneer - they're simply not and never have been. Plus all the quality problems they've always had and are seemingly worse over the last couple of years, including with the GW - Stellantis and their former namesakes had a niche in terms of price, they were always the lowest cost of the big three American companies - and that worked for them. They built some cool looking stuff that was priced reasonably but generally didn't age well - and most folks understood what they were getting at those price points. Now they're overpriced and don't age well - a recipe for disaster. If you look right now at both the CDJR dealers and used car lots - there are Jeeps overflowing all the sales lots and it seems no one is buying, especially at the inflated prices all are asking....

You seem to forget that Jeep became a luxury brand in the eighties with the Grand Wagoneer, long before any other domestic brands built a full-size, leather seated, all power conveniences, 4x4. Both were quite expensive for their time too.

I gotta admit, Jeep seemed onto something special under FCA like all the other FCA brands were at the time. I think FCA did well to build up hype and set up Jeep as a somewhat premium status icon. I go back to Sergio Marchionne every time we discuss an FCA brand, but he really carved out Jeep’s new niche that made them so successful up until 2018. I mean, Marchionne was a calculating guy who evaluated every model in FCA before rollout. That’s why Jeep was so successful. In 2018, Marchionne died and all the flare in FCA went out since that time. Stellantis has no clue on how to position and manage Jeep because that was all done under FCA and Stellantis is just a bunch of businessmen with no clue of anything whatsoever. I can’t imagine Marchionne coming out with the electric Jeeps and pricing them at what they are now. At least FCA under Marchionne understood the American market and how far they could expand Jeep without ruining the brand. My two cents…

For me, Jeep has always been about utility. CJ's and Wranglers aren't the best cars, but they can do all the car things. They aren't the best trucks, but they can do most of the truck things. You could always get one with a lot of creature comforts, or as a minimalist utility vehicle. Ditto the unibody Cherokee and Grand Cherokee: options for luxury or basic utility, combined with off road capability, at a price point not offered by other manufacturers. Reliability and ease of maintenance were also part of the sense of value associated with Jeep ownership. That's rapidly fading from memory, and new buyers aren't going line up to purchase what they're offering today. It makes me sad.

The offroad scene, and lifestyle, has evolved and changed (with arguable results). In the 90’s, having a weekend warrior Wrangler, Toyota Pickup, or anything else, was rather niche. The core audience was anyways. It was a very blue-collar middle American (here in the states) “light beer activity”. Cheap and fun, and if you don’t get it, oh well. Pulling into a parking lot covered in dents, dings, and mud was sort of a fringe thing. Then the internet thing happened. More people with way more expendable income started to take notice of what “those other kinds of people did for fun”. Skateboarding used to be the same way. It was dirty, dangerous, and in a lot of cases, looked down upon. Now, it’s a glossy Olympic Sport. With tremendous exposure, came intrigue, and money. It’s now a cash cow. Everyone wants in.

This comment doesn't really apply to Jeep but to Stellantis in general... I think they are going down the same path as Daimler Chrysler. All Carlos Tavares can talk about these days is cutting costs, not improving the products. How does he not see that he is repeating history? Pretty soon all of the American Stellantis brands with either be dead or selling absolute garbage like they did during the recession era. It's like watching a car crash in slow motion. I can see the disaster that is happening , but I am powerless to do anything about it. It's really sad.

I'll add to your thought that Tavares is very concerned about the coming wave of Chinese EVs (as are most CEOs), but isn't it interesting he's talking about cutting *costs*, not *prices". He's trying to dig in for profit margins, when part of the problem is overpriced vehicles they're having trouble moving.

Hubris, certainly, but I would also add questionable engineering (possibly done under the banner of cost cutting and/or the aforementioned hubris) - see the number of recalls in recent years and the drop in reliability ratings. Would I shell out the kind of money Jeep is asking these days for a vehicle that I would lack confidence in? Yeahhh, NO. If it were built like a tank and engineered to flourish in a post apocalyptic landscape, I'd at least consider it.

The prices are starting to come back down. We got a new Grand Cherokee L limited 4x4 and they knocked off 10 grand off sticker. Which granted it was probably inflated 6,000 to 8,000 more than it should have because they got greedy during covid.

Jeep should have done something similar to subaru and have all models either come with 4 wheel or all wheel drive. With moderate equipment.
