No one can call a football game better than Jack Cristill. You can be turning the radio dial, hear his voice, and you know instantly a MSU game was on!!!Dawg Fan 4 Life!!!
@@ckuwi the SEC has its traditions..... At LSU the officials add or remove downs as needed or slow down time. Florida spies on opposing teams' practice. Ole Miss uses loose women to facilitate recruiting, and, like Tennessee, has families "adopt" players it wants. Auburn pays big money for recruits. Alabama players cheat on the field, usually at the line of scrimmage.
Bryant gradually decreased his recruiting efforts around the 78 season as his health was seriously deteriorating. That finally caught up with the program on this day and from then forward. I can't believe people couldn't tell he was sick. For crying out loud, he retired practically a month before he died.
I was seating on the 10 looking at the last play on what some have called a choke fumble. Go back and watch it closer and you will see a linebacker stride up and knock the ball in the air while still in the center's hands (Kent Hull). Who was on the ball as the game ended? It was fullback, Donal Ray King. Oh yea, the linebacker tried the same illegal move the next week against Notre Dame but the refs caught him.
Correct. Easy to see on video. 50 uppercut punches ball BEFORE center snapped it. In a goal line or risky situation the center needs to have ball closer to him than this as well as watching the defense hands near ball. It’s easy to do and hard for refs to see especially back then.
I remember this game well. Alabama had been ranked #1 for seven weeks of the 1980 season. This loss ended Alabama's 28 game winning streak. It was quite stunning. We went on to finish the season 10-2 with a Cotton Bowl win and ranked #6 in the nation, yet we felt the season was a failure...kind of the way we Bama fans feel today with Saban when we lose (pretty rare as with Bryant). MSU finished 9-3. I guess this was their program's greatest victory. Kind of sad for MSU when you think about it.
Bryant knew after the 1982 LSU game and Bama lost 20-10 at Legiion Field...that he needed to go, he told many that it was that game that convinced him to set aside....I think Alabama had either 0 or maybe 1 first down in first half.
@DNSKansas shit if I know. he was supposed to be retiring after last year, but he's *still* there. It'll be a sad day when Jack does leave. Hail State!
No joebob, you won't find sour grapes from an Alabama fan now readying for his 4th national championship game since this 1980 defeat, and certainly not to a team that Alabama owns with a 76-17-3 record. It was tough winning only 10 games that year and finishing #6 in the nation, but I can live with it. I am happy this was Miss State's greatest victory and the high water mark for their program...even if it was 32 years ago. I hope state wins many games in the future, especially against Auburn.
I know this is an old comment but I actually had him as a gym coach at Elkmont high school, and he was a bitter asshole, and once threatened to hit me, I was like 14-15 at the time. People called him Coach fumbles.
fact is they used to penalize for excesive crowd noise. what a drive by a wishbone team if they pass it on 3 yard line i think they win, and the last play what a choke job msu fumbles lol i think they recoverd in endzone but it should have been a safty.
No fumble. Bama linebacker 50 uppercut punches ball before center snaps it. Easy to see! Can’t do that. Automatic 15 yards. Wasn’t called doesn’t matter. Game over. I was there, knew after game from talking to center for msu what happened.
In Mississippi people had "I was there when we beat the bear" bumper stickers on their cars for twenty years after this game.

Rest in peace, Mr. Cristil. I'm already missing you.
The UAla nose guard slapped
the ball just before the snap.
Correct. The uppercut ball punch before center snapped it. Slightly illegal. Should have been 15 yard penalty on bama.

I was listening to the game in the TG&Y in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Just finished a Cross country race.
Oh how I miss Jack❤️😪❤️ And John❤️

So glad you have the video review to back it up
Sigh- Jack Cristil- 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
I was there when we beat the Bear! ❤️🐶🐄🔔
Alabama lost this game then lost 7-0 to Notre Dame in Birmingham the next week. Do you have the 1980 Miss State-LSU or Miss State-Miami games?
Actually they beat LSU the next week THEN lost to ND.
Does anybody have the full game of this?
Refs missed 15 yard penalty!!!!! Last play 50 linebacker for bama uppercuts the ball BEFORE msu center snaps it !
What the hell? If the quarterback couldn't hear they forgave delay of game? What's the point of home field advantage?!?!?!

Sad for MSU? Beating the consensus #1 team riding a 28 game winning streak? I can assure you that would be a lot of team’s greatest victory.
Sources say Jack Cristil is retiring after these last few basketball games. Sad.
Should have been delay of game on Alabama wasn't called
I was at this Game.. Only time I saw Bear Bryant in person.
It is going to be a hard fought game this week two with Mississippi State winning by 3!!
Remember it well, RIP Coach
Yes. Bryant retired after the 1982 season and died in January 1983.

This was when mississippi was the best
1982 was his last season

@tolivr How is that said you cant do better than beating a #1 team

Don Jacobs lost that game long counts and a fumble.
I know this is an old comment but I actually had him as a gym coach at Elkmont high school, and he was a bitter asshole, and once threatened to hit me, I was like 14-15 at the time. People called him Coach fumbles.
the UAT QB was terrible and Mr. Bear Bryant apparently was outcoached.
Duke Moose maybe but still a helluva better coach than the drunkard silver fox john mcgay
Duke Moose no state just lucky
Yeah Bear coached Bama until 1983 if I remember correctly...
1982
haha. My friend's dad is number 72 for state

I think they recovered just inches away from the goal line, and time was zero.

i heard that don jacobs threw the game.he had money on it.
Poor MSU. The greatest moment in their sad history.
Hey the WWF announcers did this game
tolivr, can you say sour grapes?
Could Jacobs take any longer to snap the ball. Bama could have had more time if he would have snapped the ball after we kept getting 1st downs
wow! state nearly fumbled the ball back to bamaat the end of the game lol that wouldve been a major fail
it's a little sad that this is their greatest win and not a national championship
LISA ROGERS never will win a nc
You look like you play football and have that red cheek issue fat people have when it gets cold. @@andreawhitten922
Was Nick Saban at Alabama back then?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wow?
Actually Bama won the game with the fumble recovery in the endzone, but the refs screwed them. They had an agenda.
He knealed with the ball it was dead
