    That’s a beautiful piece. I would’ve paid $50 for it back in 1995/ 1996 when I was on a shopping spree for solid wood bookcases and other home furnishings. Your creative work is a very nice help for people who want good looking stuff for a good price and made with quality.

    This made me more inspired to have my own place with a basement to do these projects. What you did is cool because saving these furnitures is good for the environment plus making it beautiful again! Simple but with style :). For real wood and your design, $50.00 is very very reasonable :)

    So I'm doing something similar. It's not actually a 5$ diy though. To get primer and paint as well as rollers/brushes. (that's just to re-paint) It adds another 40-50$ What do you suggest to cut down the supply cost?

    • @MrDiyDork
      @MrDiyDork 7 років тому +8

      I recommend maybe buying some of those $3 sample paint containers or "oops" quart paint to keep paint costs down. In the "oops" paint section at Menards, I can get sample jars for $.50, quarts for $1, and gallons for $5. You just have to keep an eye out for colors you can work with. You could also try using just a brush to avoid the cost of a roller handle, extra foam rollers, tray, etc. A quart of color blocking primer is probably less than $10. You could also buy a quart of paint & primer in one type paint to keep costs down. Another thing you can try is finding another piece of furniture on craigslist, etc that could use a simple repaint and flip it back on Craigslist, Facebook marketplace, etc to recoup your money. A lot of furniture in our house was found and paid for that way.

      Hey tamiko I don’t know if you already seen but in my area we have dollar trees that have so many great paint supplies at a dollar a piece!

    MrDiyDork could you please tell me how you sand your furniture and give me tips on how to make the process faster. Thanks 👍🏼

    • @MrDiyDork
      @MrDiyDork 8 років тому +2

      +Bailey Everard Well, the sanding part does suck. I just use my DeWalt orbital sander and a foam sanding block. If I'm going to take paint & old finish off wood to go down to raw wood for new stain, I usually just do that on flat, easy to sand pieces (drawer fronts, dresser & table tops, etc).
      If I'm going to paint something, I just sand it smooth enough for paint to grip it (120 grit or so) and try not to go down to raw wood. If I do see raw wood in spots, I've learned the hard way that it will bleed through the paint and leave discolored spots. So I hit those spots with regular spray paint primer. Then I roll the whole thing with water based color blocking primer, then paint. I just picked up a spray gun to hopefully speed up & smooth out the painting process. I need to practice with it first though before I use it for a video.
      If I'm redoing something like a turned table or chair leg, I'll use my foam sanding block to give it a little tooth and then just spray paint it. I don't bother trying to take those down to raw wood or paint with a brush. It's just too much work for the money those bring around here in my area.
      I occasionally use stripper if I get a gnarly painted piece that just gums up my sander. It's messy and a pain to do, so I try to not do that too much.
      Depending on what I'm sanding, I'll sometimes use 60 grit (good for pallet wood & tearing old thick paint off quickly), but usually start with 80 or 120 (good for sanding smoother old paint, bondo, rough old poly finishes, etc) ... and then I finish with 120 or 220 depending how I'm finishing it (120 is usually ok for painting, 220 or higher is good for clear coating).
      I use the foam sanding block to get into nooks and crannies as well as smooth out the 2nd coat of poly or lacquer before adding the 3rd coat. I buy the "fine" grit foam blocks from Menards. They don't have a grit listed, but they seem like they're in the 100s and they eventually wear down to about 200ish or so.
      For this particular bookcase project, I just used my orbital sander with 120 grit discs for both the painted areas and the wood trim parts.
