    Congratulations on your video. I was thinking about doing something similar, but have no clue on how to make a YT-Video ... because I absolutely agree with every single word you say at the beginning: It's amazing what is hidden to the naked eye, but possible to make visible with quite a simple setup, your very nice results proof it. At the beginning you need to put some time and effort into it, there are many things that can go wrong and will go wrong. But if you enjoy the night sky and don't hesitate to loose sleep in summer and freeze your butt off in winter it's very rewarding! I went through the comments of your video and I think you succeeded in your goal: Motivating others to try it out! I did answer some questions, I hope you agree on them ... I want so keep it simple too, but I added a StarSense to make aligning even quicker, a remote shutter-control for my (not astro-modified) dslr, a due-shield and some vibration dampers under my tripod and off I go. Your pictures especially of the planets are way better then mine, but I am still extremely happy with what I get after an hour outside after work and maybe another hour of processing the next evening. A few nights ago the sky suddenly cleared up, I set everything up, aligned, took darks and biases, then had the camera work for 90 minutes while a was already sleeping 🤩. Pleiades was the target and I am very happy with the result. But I admit: A eq-mount is on the way to Lake Constance and an astro-modified camera is next on my wish-list. Greetings from Switzerland

    Year old video but I am just now seeing it! I see you are at least smart enough to mount the ota all the way up! I didn’t read to do that anywhere ir watch any videos beforehand, so I mounted it in the middle. The first time I went to track to an object, down it went until the eyepiece hit the base of the mount and I got a nice gear grinding sound out of the motor! Luckily nothing was damaged.
    I have also learned that I must need a camera to actually see any galaxy. Even Andromeda with the 2” 26mm eyepiece is just a fuzzy blob with my eye!

    • @KylesAstrophotography
      @KylesAstrophotography 3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the comment. Yes with the stock alt-az mount and no wedge it is necessary to be mindful of where the camera is as it can hit the mount. If you haven't ever taken your telescope to a dark site, you may want to try that for seeing "more" at the eyepiece. It can help reveal more details in the faint fuzzies. Clear skies!

    Great to see your results. Got my 8SE back in May but can count on 1 hand the nights that were clear since I got it :( Already have the 6.3 reducer and camera adapter but still waiting for my adapter ring to arrive. Seems the Sony adapters are not easy to get. So as I wait, I keep watching UA-cam videos... Thinking what to get next... maybe ZWO asi224mc camera seems to be a go to camera for this scope. Then the next step is the mount thinking that's a big jump. See reviews on the Wedge but never great reviews. Was thinking to make one that seem easy enough just to play with. To go further I wonder if this is the best scope but like always it all comes down to how much to spend.
    Where I live summers are typically clear for many nights, but this 2020 can't even give me that :(. So I will sit and wait for the ring and the sky's to clear up then see how much more I get into this. If it wasn't for seeing Jupiter and Saturn the last few nights I was close to put it back in the box. Yet to see a galaxy but I have time ... Thanks again for the video.

      Hey Casey,
      Thank you for watching! I definitely hear you with the weather. It hasn't been the greatest around here either. I think it has been almost 2 weeks now since the last clear night in which I finished my most recent project. Funny you should mention the asi224mc, I have actually had that camera on backorder since early May. I plan to use that camera for planetary work, I think I will be able to obtain some decent images with it and the 8se. I considered a wedge at first too, but went ahead and got an equatorial mount, the reason being I could use the EQ with the 80mm refractors I have as well, it's just much more versatile.
      Hope you get some clear nights soon! Cheers!

A motorized mount with your camera and 30-50mm lens will already allow great pictures of the large nebulae (California, heart etc.). @@Jimmy_Cavallo I am a Mac-guy, so I do the stacking in an free software called siril. In the PC-world they usually use DeepSkyStacker. Photoshop is my next goal, but as I get it it's mainly used for further "developing" the data coming out of DSS. For this I use LightRoom, the "little sister" of Photoshop. Start with stacking 10 pictures of for example the Andromeda Galaxy, if it works go up to 30 or 50 identical pictures, then start adding darks, biases and flats (there are YT-videos on all of this) and you'll be amazed! Hi wonderful images with the 8se. This was my first scope ten years ago and still is my main scope that I backpack everywhere for stargazing sessions but I never thought to use it for atrophotography as I bought an apo refractor since to do that. I have the Celestron focal reducer too (bought about a year later) but I've never really put it to use. You are now inspiring me to give this a shot after 10 years of neglect, ha! Question, I see you also have planetary images, is that with the focal reducer? Observing-wise, I wonder if the planets show more detail with the reducer combined with barlow because of the concentration of light into the centre of the image? Have you tried with and without the reducer? Thanks

    • @KylesAstrophotography

      Thank you! I have not used the barlow with the focal reducer. The planets are so bright, there isnt much of a concern for them getting too dim. When using it for photography I mainly utilize it for small objects like galaxies, planetary nebulae, and the planets. Clear skies!

Dylan and Chuck - my other heroes - made great pictures as well, but with much better gear (and much more talent and much more post processing skills and investing much more time etc etc. 🤩). Oh, and did I mention that I have great fun with my 6SE WITH the focal reducer, StarSense for easier alignment and my daily dslr behind it? However, while your planet photos are good, the best I've seen anyone take with the 8se, they are not crisp or clear (again not dissing you at all, yours are the best I've seen using the 8se). Is the 8se just not capable of getting a sharp image? 9:00 image in your video for instance. What is the culprit? Do you have any suggestions? Usually you take a short movie of a minute or two (depending on your computer) which gives you several hundred up to thousands of frames. Special programs then analyze each frame for sharpness and let you choose the percentage you want to keep to stack, then other programs help you sharpen the image before you take it to photoshop or LR for the "finish" - hey, nobody ever told you astrophotography was easy 😉, but there are great YT-videos about that. But seriously, his results are amazing! You probably need at least his focal length, and he probably had perfect seeing, perfect focus, the planet was on the best "turn" on it's and our way around the sun and then perfectly processed the data. But planetary is certainly the thing where alt-az get's the least in your way because it doesn't matter if the little bright spot in the middle oft your image drifts away a little.
