  • F1's 2026 aerodynamic regulations have been revealed. The cars will be 30kg lighter, 200mm shorter and 100mm narrower, with no DRS, replaced by active aerodynamics in front and rear wings and "override" mode to unlock more power to overtake. Carlos Sainz's deal with Williams is reportedly done, with the Mercedes and Red Bull doors now closed.

The question about the active aero is whether it is just a black & white case of it being fully open or fully closed ... if the rules allow for "partially open" the teams will jump on this ... and does the rules allow for the front and rear to to be open at different angles, independent of each other, changing the handling characteristics of the car in different parts of the track? In IndyCar you get 200 seconds over the course of the race. It actually makes the racing better, because it gives roughly 50 more horsepower (that is a generalization, as it increase the boost of the turbo, so may have a bigger effect on one manufacturer engine than the other). The driver has to strategically manage it's use, and many times you end up with a situation where the leader of the race has exhausted the majority of their push to pass, and a charging car from behind has lots to use. It definitely makes the finish of races interesting in many cases. This deployment of extra energy is a step in the right direction, but it's only electrical which could be it's Achilles heel.

True, but they have to. An IndyCar program costs between 7 -11 million a year. F1 costs well over 10x that. If F1 wants to keep the cost cap, they need to make things cheaper so teams have money to make improvements and prevent these eras of dominance. If you make the championship more about the engine, battery deployment, and strategy, it will be cheaper. Aero based racing is incredibly expensive to develop and update.

@Lovely-Liv I agree with what the OP is saying, but this is the hole F1 has put themselves in. I loved the 90s era of F1 where F1 was the pinnacle of motorsport in both racing and technology, but F1 is a victim of their own rules. They want to have very strict regulations and a cost cap to keep costs down to attract more manufacterers. They are also trying to increase competition and improve the spectacle. Indy racing has plenty of drawbacks but no one can deny it is much cheaper and way more competitive. If this is the direction F1 wants to go, why not take the best parts of proven race leagues? In my opinion, if F1 opened up the regulations and let F1 teams actually be innovative again we could have the best of all worlds.

Having active aero on all cars at all times only means the faster cars will get faster. This approach won’t encourage passing. DRS achieved this with only allowing the car behind to use. This has lead to a lot of great passing and strategies. Replacing DRS with an energy boost is okay but it’s not visible to the fans.

I actually have some faith in a much better Williams going forward with Dorilton money and James Vowles in charge. If they can upgrade their factory technology as Volwes is pushing to do and possibly woo Adrian Newey to come on board for a new challenge. They could be a player under the 2026 rules package with the Merc engines. I like the Sainz/Albon combo too.

Williams?! 😖 The only team in the history of professional sports to finish 11th in a 10 team championship?! This is a tragedy and Freddie Vasseur has made a very uncharacteristic blunder with this decision and he will regret it! I am NOT uncertain the pairing of Leclerc and Hamilton is going to be a hysterical farce and Freddie's gonna look stupid for it, not to mention that Carlos Sainz is among the top 3 drivers on merit after Max and Leclerc. No driver in the field has accomplished more with less, than Carlos Sainz and his record bears that truth.

I remember Lewis saying he had looked at all the cars and felt proud that none of them looked like the awful FIA show car. Or like eachother. Just hope they all do it again. I must say I like the inwash front wing. With the end plates inline with the inside of the front wheels. More of a mid plate.
