  • For over five decades, designer Mario Buatta elaborately styled the homes of American royalty, including those of Henry Ford II, Barbara Walters, Malcolm Forbes, Mariah Carey and Billy Joel. But despite his high-profile clientele, Buatta was sometimes secretive about his own collection, rarely granting access to his Upper East Side apartment. In this episode of Expert Voices, Buatta’s biographer and friend Emily Evans Eerdmans invites us to take a peak behind the curtain and learn how a boy from Staten Island became the “Prince of Chintz”. Sotheby’s sale, Mario Buatta: Prince of Interiors, will offer a diverse array of nearly 1,000 works that the designer lived with and features many pieces that have long been admired in showhouse rooms and magazines. At one time, Mr. Buatta was featured in Architectural Digest nearly every month! Especially, during the 80's and 90's. I was a young man learning my own style and tastes and also learning to appreciate masters like Mr. Buatta, who had mastered layering techniques, color palettes and art and furniture placements/arrangements. Rest in peace and thank you for all you contributed to the worlds of art, interior design and fabrics Mr. Buatta.

I relate, profoundly. My childhood Home featured much of this style. Now that I am an adult and own a 1945 Colonial Revival architectural style Home, I am leaning heavily and unreservedly into this decor style.
