I bowled with Tom at the Hipp when we were kids. People outside of New England can't appreciate the skill needed to excel at this type of bowling. Thanks for the video. Brought back lots of great memories.
People in Maritime Canada play this like crazy, I used to do competitive games when I was little, got really good at it and ended up winning a few trophies, I got first place High Double, first place Roll off’s average, and most strikes in my division, then second place roll off’s average the next year, but I had to quit because I kept getting joint pain, turns out I had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, but I’ve been trying to get back into it.

Here's a very brief rundown of it: Candlepin is played throughout most of New England, and parts of Canada (mainly New Brunswick & Nova Scotia) Same scoring system as regular ten pin bowling, except you get three rolls per frame. Instead of a strike or spare, you get ten points for the frame if you knock all the pins down on the third ball. The pins that are knocked over don't get removed from the field of play, unless a pin is very far out in front beyond where the pins are set up. The ball that is thrown actually weighs LESS than what a single Candlepin itself actually weighs. First time viewers might think this looks easy, it is not. There has NEVER been a perfect game in Candlepin Bowling (A perfect game is achieving a score of 300 which happens somewhat often in regular ten pin bowling), the world record for the highest game ever in Candlepin Bowling is 245.
Not easy is right! I've bowled Candlepin since I was a boy with my dad. I didn't know about 10 pin bowling, I thought Candlepin bowling WAS bowling until I went to visit family in Ohio. 10 pin seemed so easy to me then with the huge fat pins and massive bowling balls. My cousins got bored of my getting a mark every frame and just let me bowl for them.
I played both Candlepin and 5 Pin Bowling. Candlepin is definitely more difficult, even for experienced 5 Pin Bowlers like me. In fact, my high single in 5 Pin Bowling is 312 (highest score possible in 5 Pin is 450), but only 96 in Candlepin.

Once I started bowling candlepin I never had interest in 10 pin ever again. Candlepin is so challenging. I kinda feel for the rest of the country that doesn't offer this.

Nova Scotia, in particular Halifax has always held Boston dear to their hearts…huge loyalty to the Red Sox. Do you know much about the Halifax explosion? Maybe your mother had some family and roots in Halifax as well?
I love Halifax spent a lot of time at the Split Crow and the Lower Deck. I have to get a Donair fix along with Blueberry Grunt. When I lived in Cambridge, Ma the area I lived in was filled with 1st and 2nd generation maritimers! Yes Boston and Halifax are like family. So many Nova Scotian's here! Plus the Christmas tree which makes me very proud.

Converting a split in 10 pin bowling is hard enough. But converting a split in candlepin, without any wood to help you, is damn near impossible and Gary did that in the first frame. True talent.
What year was this? We have something like this in the Philippines but the shape of the pins are like the 10 pins just smaller. We also use 3 small balls like this. The difference from this is that we clear out the fallen pins and don't leave them around the standing ones for the next ball.
@@bobbymonteforte3705 I believe that this once happened in 10 pin and i think it was in a pba match where a bowler got a 5-10 split and a messenger tried to knock down the 5 pin but the 5 pin somehow stood up and moved about 3 inches away from its spot and legit became the 8 pin 🤯

I have bowled all my life in Milwaukee and I've never even heard of candlepins before. So, a bowler gets 3 shots at the spare, and the deck is not cleaned of downed pins after a shot. Interesting!
No they only get 2 shots at the spare like ten pin however they get a third ball for count because the game is harder...if you want something in the middle between the two I would advocate looking up duckpin bowling
It is fun and much more difficult. I bowled in leagues for seven years growing up, and in 1975, I was a member of the winning Massachusetts Junior Boys State Championship team. I bowled 273 in three games.
Too bad there aren’t any candlepin lanes west of the East coast. Certainly a lot more pin action than ten pin. Just as entertaining to watch is the audience reaction to some of the pinfalls.
They experimented with it in Dallas 20+ years ago. It didn't take. AMF and Bronco Bowl were still the main bowling draws. Still are for the most part. Lots of the old lanes are done. Big Town, Jupiter, and many more. Those old lanes have great memories for me.
tom olsta has a very classic style of candlepin bowling action. he starts the ball high with a 3 step delivery and really creates a lot of speed. he can destroy the pins and was most likely the best ever. gary was very good too.
they really made some great shots but the way some of those pins slid around w/o falling seems the plate pin plate is juiced up with silicone. plus you can see how shiny it is.
Critiquing Carringtons pre approach? The most accomplished bowler ever. Why don’t you go critique jacks swing Jordan’s jumper and Brady’s follow through while your at it.
Willing to pay X amount of money for you to come Bowl so I can record how embarrassing it will be. “Place” you mean play, but I’ll also bet the kids that do bowl would beat you both at grammar and in this game.
The better bowlers hit the headpin more often than average bowlers. Some luck is involved but skill will win over the long run. It's also pretty rare to get a strike without hitting the headpin first. Beginners probably should ignore score totals at first and just practice hitting the headpin consistently.
You could practice this game for the next 30 years and never come Remotely close to throwing a 160 game. Willing to pay to see how you do at actual Bowling. After that I’ll go bowl you in ten pin with my surgically repaired twig arm and still stomp you.
Real bowling with a huge ball on oiled lanes that aim towards the head pin and amateurs get perfect games. Why not just play Wii bowling of you want an easy version to get inflated scores

But ya kids that actually bowl candlepin I’d be willing to bet they’d beat a grown adult “Man” like yourself. After you embarrass yourself doing that me and you can go “real” bowling and ill embarrass you in that too.
So the larger ball makes it a game for men and a smaller one is for kids. I guess the professional leagues should be playing softball and using a college size football!!!
