Interesting and nicely thought out review. It sounded scripted, and like you had a cheatsheet. I saw a lot of edit cuts and a few jump cuts that were used to improve the flow and continuity of the presentation. I like that it was a review based on your experience with the unit since you bought it. So many presenters just trying jotting and jogging through all of the features and settings. You did this, but offered some informative critique of the unit based on your knowledge and experience. I really like that. It was an honest and very biased review since it was based solely on your experiences as the owner. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a biased review. Far too many people try very hard to offer an "unbiased review" of products. You did not. Because of that I learned a lot about what you had to say. This video is over 3 years old, and so the info is out of date for this unit. They are now selling for about "$2445.00" new, and not the "$4500.00" you suggested. Panasonic is putting out newer units and this one is approaching the realm of becoming obsolete, and perhaps, soon to be outmoded. Regardless, I see the DVX200 with years of useful life as a video camcorder. I skimmed through and watched dozens of reviews, mostly the same-ole, same-ole approach of just trying to highlight the features and functions. Your approach was very refreshing and informative, thank you... And, I like the fact that you took the time to work with a script, or a cheatsheet and, you took the time to study and learn about your product. You also did an excellent job with editing your video, a testament to your working knowledge about post production. So many presenters try to make their films "unscripted and on-the-fly," an approach that almost never works. The result are always poorly made videos, poor grammar, stammering, stumbling, fumbling and a whole lot of hemming and hawing... those kinds of films usually makes videos exceptionally hard to watch, and I usually will quit. I almost quit watching when you started out with the all too common intro of "Hey Guys, Ed Here?" I hate those intros. They are not professional introductions, and are a definite sign of an amateur filmmaker/vlog-maker. I have a strong aversion to such intros because they are, 1, diminutive, and 2, very unprofessional. But I decided to try watching your video anyway, despite its unprofessional introduction. I'm glad I did because you presented so much valuable information, and you answered a lot of questions that I had about this unit. You gave me enough information to come to a conclusion about what kind of camera I want to buy... I'm poor. Money is always a premium, so I can't afford much of anything. Now I am leaning towards a Panasonic DVX200, and it's because of your presentation. Thank you.
We have just upgraded from a HMC151 to a DVX200 so this video is very interesting indeed. Only had it it day and was driven mad by the diopter/LCD cutoff feature!

I still use the HMC150 for some gigs, especially some cheaper event videography like recitals or pageants where I can't justify the wear-and-tear and added runtime on the new DVX200. I just shot a wedding yesterday where the HMC150 and DVX200 worked in tandem as a 2-camera coverage of the ceremony. I noticed the DVX200 appears to white-balance slightly different than the HMC150. Same room, same white card, but the DVX200 had more of an orange glow to everything whereas the HMC150 had more of a deeper red wine-colored balance. What's your experience with that?
We have had nothing but problems with our DVX200. It changes shutter speed from 1/50 to 1/125 randomly. The fan jams and makes a horrid noise, It off to PAN for repair after 4 months.The inbuilt scenefiles are terrible, it took us weeks to create a workable scenefile. The IS is worse than our HPX200 P2 cameras. focussing in HD is very hard, can't trust focus peaking (much better in UHD though) autofocus is terrible (yes, some people still use autofocus now and then:)) The camera is way heavier than other cameras in it's class. On the positive side it has some amazing features you wont find in other cameras, like: auto focus racking which works incredibly well. Great review, hopefully you wont get to many problems with yours
This was an awesome review. I currently own and LOVE 2 HMC150’s but have had to turn down work because I don’t have 4K capability outside my GoPros. I’ve been eyeing this camera since it came out and I am ready to take the plunge. I’m still keeping my trusty 150’s though. Thanks for the awesome review!

Were you aware that you just have to pull outward on the "adjustment knob/cam" to adjust the tightness for the camer's mounting plate? Pulling out on it "reclocks" it so that you can then tighten it all the way down. Very common little thing few people know about. I can't imagine that tripod not having that option. Great video!
A note about low light - it's not great, but if you have a couple of on camera LEDs you can use either on the cam or around the room, you can get good shots. Obviously with a full lighting setup you'll be fine. It's not a low light hero, but that's due to the lens being 2.8-4.5. Tricks you can use - lower shutter speed subtly, stay as wide as possible and keep to 2.8 and, last resort, up the gain in increments. The issue here is that the gain applies noise reduction and will smooth out skin tones. You can also change picture profile, sometimes you might find a profile better suited to the situation you're in or one based in a less contrasty gamma. It's doable, but it can be a headache.
+passthesalt2000 I've got the Switronix TL-50 and plan to do just that. Still, after all you've mentioned including matching gain levels, it's still darker than a HMC150 (which I never thought was particularly good in lo-lite to begin with). It has higher gain capability than the 150, but I hate adding the noise that comes with gain. I suppose I just assumed that a larger sensor meant better lo-lite, but I guess that's not the case.
+Ed Ricker It's mainly because of the lens. The sensor still has a positive effect on the overall image, but the lens holds it back. Unfortunately, most of the new fixed lens cams with larger sensors (including the new Sony Z150) have similarly slow and ramping lenses, so there's not much that can be done with it at the moment in terms of how technology is progressing. Maybe in a year or so they'll find a way to put a faster lens on a large sensor cam. I was also disappointed when I put it up against my old z5 which was never that great in low light but opens to f1.6 and has a longer zoom range, but when viewing the footage side by side, the DVX200 is the clear winner. So it's a case of trying to work around the limitations a package like this gives you, however frustrating.
I am currently filming everything with my Panasonic GH4 and was thinking about this camera as well for fast autofocus and good IS. But the price is (still) too high. Hopefully next year this camera will be cheaper on the used market. What worries me is the low light capability (which is not good on my GH4 as well).
+Lutte Kikker Thanks for the comment! I used the DVX200 a few times recently at wedding receptions during the evening. I've found that using the High Sensitivity mode, it increases the available gain without adding a terrible amount of noise (besides noise already present from gain in low-light situations). It was workable, though not impressively so. Just thought I'd let you know my experience.

What people forget about this camera is that it is a jack of all trades but not a master of one! For instance it is one of the few camcorders on the market that can imprint date and time into the video,...a requirement for recording depositions! With the right scene file, this camera is pretty good. You just need a lot of time learning it. It is not a DSLR but who wants all the ancillary equipment, audio recorders, power supplies, etc, when you can have something that works, all in one.

Great hands on review Ed! I've got a GH5 at the moment but for the run and gun shooting I do (Action sports, mainly motocross) I need a true camcorder. Messing around with manual zoom, poor auto focus and different lenes is not optimal when im out in the desert and have one take to get the shot. After watching your review and many others I'm convinced that the dvx200 would be a great camcorder to add to my filming gear setup. I'll use my GH5 for more cinematic shots and situations where a small camera is needed. Thanks again for the "real world situation" review 👌
With that being a manfrotto tripod head, you should be able to adjust the extra play on the locking screw that you mentioned. Simply pull away from the head and turn. They are spring loaded to make that adjustment easy. Thanks for the review!

For solving the issue about noise in low light (lower the detail level slightly, did +value for coring, went down to - for the chroma level, master ped at - value, cine gamma and the cine color matrix. You can choose the value as you like), I recommend to create a scene file for low light and another for rest of the situations. there are 6 values. I use just 2 :) After I made one settings that I like, I rename it and copy it to other camcorders with an SD card. For high gain/iso situations we must add "noise removal" "noise reduction" (in photo or in video) but we cannot use that settings in the sun because the people will looks like "wax figures". skin tones always off - my choice. hmc has a F 1.6 and dvx F 2.8. try to put in low light situation both camcorder with the same scene file settings, and set both to f2.8, same shutter, same gain, same ND :D. Don't use open because hmc is open at 1.6! And if you like give me comparison pictures with WaveForm Monitor on and off! :)
We had 3.of these for doing IMAG in a high end casino. Not super impressed with the auto focus at all. Its would sometimes completey fail to take focus at all, and especially in low light/stage conditions HH down in the pit. Never had a problem from back of house on sticks though. The image is definitely razor sharp and flawless in 1080

That's true. 28 minutes at 60FPS at UHD for a 32GB card is pretty low. If you had two 128GB cards in both slots set for relay recording, that could get you about 4 hours of continuous recording. My thinking though is that I want the best quality when I shoot 4k, so I'm not necessarily concerned with that. I would just buy more cards and enjoy the high quality 4k. Of course for weddings, recitals, and other long form recording, I don't generally shoot 4k anyway. In FHD using the AVCHD codec, I can squeeze well over 2 hours out of that same 32GB card.
Apparently, OLED screens have a limited lifespan so they dim over time and the proximity sensor is a way to make sure it's not on all the time, so no, you can't have them both on at the same time, but you do get used to it.
I tried the AG-UX90, AG-UX180. Didn't really care much for those. So, I'm ordering the AG-DVX200 this weekend. I like the Orca 54 LCD hood, had to put one in the shopping cart after this video. At the moment (October 6, 2017) until December 31, 2017, you can get a $400 rebate on the DVX200, so it's really only $300 more than the AG-UX180...I'd say go for it if you want one. pmgodfrey hiya, what is it that you didn't like about the UX180? I am trying decide between the UX and DVX at the moment and as much as I love the look of the DVX the UX180 seems to have the edge on paper at almost every level apart from a slightly smaller sensor. How are you getting on with the DVX?
I liked the UX-90 and UX-180, but the DVX200 had a slightly larger imager. While the difference in price between the UX-90 and DVX200 is large, it wasn't so bad with the UX-180 vs the DVX200 especially with the rebate being offered until December. I downloaded and printed the guide written by Barry Green and had OfficeMax spiral bind the book so it's easy to flip through. Great review, Ed! I feel better because I just purchased the same camera, and a big bag of extra goodies for $1800. It looks brand spanking new! And only because I want to learn how to shoot my film project, based on a book and screenplay I wrote. At first, all I wanted to do was write and direct, and I feel very confident and competent in those areas. I have a good cinematographer to help, but no time to teach. I want to get behind the camera as well. However, I know nothing about camera stuff. All I know is what and why I want to see something. I also know how to turn the thing on. Actually not necessarily...in this case, the lens limits it a bit. You'd find better low light performance in full-frame DSLRs with switchable lenses unfortunately. But bumping up the DVX's gain will usually allow for low light situations, but a little grain will be present as well due to the high gain.
Nice video. Just a comment on the close proximity of the tripod's tightening lever to the bottom of the camera. You should be able to unscrew the tripod's tightening lever and re-position it such that it does not butt up against the camera. I did this with a Manfrotto tripod in order to accommodate an FZ1000.
That would be a perfect idea! Except that screw broke off years ago and I super glued it back on, haha. It still turns to tighten, it just doesn't move out anymore. I had actually totally forgot I super glued it until I took a closer look. So it's my fault!
I really liked this review style. Nice mix of tech and opinion. Do you have any raw footage available? I'm looking at this as a possible videography camera but could really do with testing our some real files.
Most important to me is to know how well I can work with footage within Premiere. Scrubbing around the timeline and playing back etc. I would be great if it was V-Log too! +jadesroom If you already have lenses, the FS5 is a great option. For me, I've always used fixed-lens cameras, so buying something like the FS5 would be more expensive with the accompanying lens purchases. I use the Devin Graham Signature Glidecam. +Ed Ricker I don't have lenses and, therefore, purchasing a DVX200 makes more sense. Thanks for the lead on the Glidecam. I ordered one this week. I like using the SteadyTracker for something quick without a lot of set up time; but since the V between the thumb and the index finger acts as the gimbal, it's definitely not as smooth as a Glidecam.

Hi Jeremy, thanks for watching. I've really grown to enjoy this camera, and little issues with the reflective/automatic switching of the lcd screen have become easier to deal with. I still get caught by the auto LCD feature sometimes, but I actually prefer to have it on auto switch just so that I can raise the EVF to my eye quickly without having to press a button. The OIS is still great, and I've appreciated it during run-and-gun environments when a tripod wasn't available or accessible. The camera is perhaps a bit heavy for long handheld recording sessions, and using it with a glidecam is a bit rough on the forearm (assuming no vest), but it has still produced some great images. The 60FPS is great across resolutions, but the 120FPS is usually too soft for my tastes. Introduces a lot of grain too, so I normally can get away with 60FPS for any slo-mo shots. Of course 60FPS crops in the sensor a bit, so you have to weigh that with your other options as well. If I was shooting a car in a confined space, I may not be able to fit the entire car in my frame at 60FPS. Probably the biggest gripe I have now is that there is some very noticeable banding/grain in footage shot in V-Log, especially in blue sky or other gradients like on a wall indoors. I used to shoot a lot of nature shots in V-Log before I realized that I actually prefer shooting normally to reduce the banding and grain. For instance, this video was shot without V-Log, nice smooth sky: ua-cam.com/video/Sq5bAYpaK5c/v-deo.html This video WAS shot in V-Log, skip to 0:42 for banding sky example: ua-cam.com/video/nLBs1llpibs/v-deo.html This review was shot in V-Log indoors, and the walls look horribly noisy: ua-cam.com/video/6Me0lg2ANNw/v-deo.html Unfortunately I bought the camera excited to try the V-Log feature for greater post options, but ultimately it's not worth the degradation of gradient quality. Perhaps shooting externally at 10-bit 4:2:2 would fix some of that, but spending $1000 on an external recorder is a whole 'nuther can of worms. The camera has locked up on me once or twice and I had to pull out the battery to shut the camera off (unresponsive power switch/functions). That got me a bit nervous, but I've never actually missed a shot because of the issue. People still compliment me on the camera! They love the look of it, and I feel like clients put more faith in my work even before having seen the footage just because of how badass the camera is. Pretty cool!
Glad I found this video! I have a vintage 2009 HMC150A myself and am thinking about this as an upgrade because as you will know, the 150's 1080P is more like 720p! You mention the low light is bad, is it bad in HD mode when its clumping pixels together to generate the image or is it bad mainly in 4k mode? I do a lot of nightclub stuff and the HMC with gain ramped right up is fine and usable, once its been through render and rerender on UA-cam you cant even tell. Last question - the Auto/Manual switch on the 150 - is there something similar on the DVX200, its sometimes quite useful for full run and gun mode. Many thanks for the video!
Sorry for the late response. Yes there's an auto/manual switch. As for poor quality 4k, the gain can be added pretty heavy but only to a certain point without grain and degradation of quality. I would be concerned about using this for nightclub stuff because adding gain in low light adds a lot of ghosting to the image. That might look pretty poor with a nightclub with the dancing and lights and action.

hi ed just for info on your manfrotto pan head you say you can't tighten the plate because it hits the camera next time when it hits the camera pull the plastic knob towards you its spring loaded and you can then move it back and retighten it up I get this problem quite often but you can normally get just the right position with a bit of trial and error and get the sliding plate tight,hope this helps

agree with all your "gripes". so many practical "camcorder footprint" benefits have gone totally disregarded with this thing. was so excited about this camera. finally, thought i had a good reason to upgrade from my hpx170. but no dice. after using it on an event shoot this weekend. its highly unlikely i'll buy one. or for run and gun use, ever even USE it again. #ihazasadness
Hey Ed. I just bought this camera today. I tried some indoor and outdoor shots during day for both tests. Wow the noise in the shots I got was horrible. I did the latest update for the firmware and that may have helped but only slightly. Can you offer any tips for how I can get cleaner footage ? Btw the shots I took were at 0db gain. Is there a noise reduction setting or something? Any help would be great
+Pete Larson What Scene file are you using? SCN4 is the worst for noise in my experience. Also, in dark scenes, the DVX200 still has some noticeable noise regardless. I've never had an issue with noise in the day or even in well-lit indoor scenes. Can you shoot a test so we can check it out and see if maybe your camera is operating differently from ours?
we used this camera for wedding video, however, the focus point is only at the center of the frame, do you know if any way I can change my focus point when I am shooting?? thank you
do you mean the autofocus point? not really sure, I use manual focus almost 100% of the time. a guy by the name of Barry Green has put out some dvx200 videos on UA-cam that may address that.
Which is the maximum capacity of SD memories compatible to this camera? I want to buy this camera but I got some doubts about filming time and other stuff. Great channel and review.
It supports SDHC memory cards (4 GB to 32 GB) and SDXC memory cards (48 GB to 128 GB) I use 128GB SDXC, and since it has dual ports it can relay from one to the next for a total of 256GB. Depending on what resolution/codec you're shooting in, you can get quite a bit of recording time. 256GB would give over 10 hours of MP4 HD, and about 23 hours of AVCHD.
So I know you're not an expert on the camera but figured you were very responsive last time around (I purchased the 504HD btw). The camera keeps turning on the ND filter automatically, even on manual setting with the ND slider to off (and I've turned off the auto-iris just in case), do you know if there is anyway to disable this? It somewhat ruined my last webcast, since I had to shoot a board meeting where a projection screen was directly behind the board, yes the screen would have been blown-out without the auto-ND but I'd rather have a blown-out irrelevant screen than a way-too-dark subject (the panel members). Can't seem to find any information on the auto-ND aspect to the camera, and makes the ND button seem pointless if it's just going to set it to what it wants regardless of the user setting.
Wow, no I've never had an issue with any sort of auto-ND feature. ND should only kick in when you hit the ND filter switch, no other time. Only suggestion I have would be to ensure you have your auto-switch off, but I'm sure you do at this point.

Ed Ricker Yeah you really want a glass screen protector, the plastic ones don't look or feel good from experience. I had a look around and there's a site that sells the protectors cut to the size that suits you. Only thing to be careful of is that the glass can be prone to cracking when being put on, it's tough as nails once it's on. Yeah not just this camera but so many cameras even the Atomos Shogun I use is so reflective it's murder to shoot outside. Just wish this camera had a faster lens. Say F 2.8 on the long end zoom. F 1.5 at the start although I am a fan of constant aperture. Another thing what happened to the super expensive P2 cards Panasonic promised to support far into the future. I was waiting for years for a 4K P2 camera and ended up buying 2 Gh4's with Shoguns. Maybe the next round. But there is a lot of things I like about the DVX.
+reticulan5 I would looove to have a shogun. That surprises me to hear that it's so reflective too. I would gladly put up with more of a matte surface if it increased the ability to use it outdoors. I feel like touch screens have all gotten so shiny that any finger prints show up way more than they should. I shot a bit with a friend's GH4 the other day. Cool camera...I was surprised how light it was!
Ed Ricker We are still having a bright hot weather here in Oz. My daughter who is a film graduate and I shot a wedding 2 weeks ago. The outside footage I missed judge on a few shots. (overexposed). Lucky there was plenty of shots to use and my daughter had a eye cup on her camera. But still a lot of good shoots ruined that could of made a better wedding video. I'm also angry at most screens these days that includes I Phones etc. Why make it so bright. My Mac Book Pro same deal. I still have my 2008 17 inch. That one has a beautiful matt screen.
Hey! Still like it a lot. I've gotten relatively used to the couple gripes I had in the video. I've admittedly been thinking about going the way of the Canon EOS or Black Magic to get a more cinematic style with larger sensors, but the DVX200 performs well for what it's intended to do. If you're comparing the UX180 to the DVX200, I'd highly suggest the DVX200. I have the UX90 which I know is lesser than the UX180, but it still has some features that are identical to the UX180. Namely, the 1-inch CMOS sensor. I really appreciate the DVX200's micro 4/3" sensor over the 1-inch CMOS sensor. You can really see the difference in the talking portion of the videos here: UX90: ua-cam.com/video/Xo2-W-jbLFQ/v-deo.html DVX200: ua-cam.com/video/jHWlqXcX--M/v-deo.html The framing doesn't match up perfectly since I didn't record those 2 videos with the intention of comparing the cameras, but you can really see the difference both in color and in depth of field. I didn't try to match the colors either...I just selected SCN5 for both color profiles and white balanced to a card. You can really get an idea how different the cameras look with similar settings. I think I'm using one extra side light for the UX90 video though. Also, I was recording 4k DCI with the DVX200, but you get the idea. Good luck!

The focus changes on you even if you're in manual and not touching the focus ring? That's quite odd...not sure why it would do that. Your focus Auto/Manual switch is definitely on Manual along with the the camera's master Auto/Manual switch? Just checking....
Random question here. I bought the dvx200 to use with my 2 Gh4 cameras And received a used one instead of new. Long story, quick question. How do you playback files on the camera? I see no button or menu item to do so. Obviously I am missing it. I don't have the manuals and cant figure it out. Had to record all day on Ninja flame and trust the local recordings were good. Any help would be amazing!!!
I've been shooting with my HVX200 for a while and was thinking about getting one of these as a nice UHD upgrade (dat manual zoom tho). Just wondering, does it record all audio channels like the HVX or is it just the two that the switches are set to?
Hey, thanks for the message. The DVX200 only records the two channels that the switches are set to. So both channels could be Input 1, both 2, one of each, or a combination of one input and one internal mic, or all internal mics. Just two options at a time however. I highly recommend the DVX200 as long as you're aware of some of the cons I outline in the video review. Good luck!
Any ideas on a suitable tripod head? That looks like the 503, we were thinking about the 504HD but maybe not if there's that locking issue on it as well.
+Phillip Killion I just bought the 504HD, and it's PERFECT for this camera. It's much wider than the 503HD and doesn't have the locking issue. The 504HD comes with a very long camera plate though which I decided not to use. I prefer a shorter camera plate because a longer one interferes with balance fine-tuning on a glidecam (regardless of the camera attached to it).
Hey Ed, Panasonic is introducing the AG‑UX180 with the 1inch sensor, how do you think that compares to this camera? or do you think that it will preform that much better in low light. my company is asking me to get a camera and i want to know should i wait or get this one that I already wanted but that was before i found out about the larger sensor. what are your thoughts?thank you for any input.

I'm attaching the sizing chart for sensors: theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/.a/6a00df351e888f883401bb08ad4b14970d-800wi You can see the Micro 4/3" of the DVX200 is bigger than the 1" sensor of the UX180. A characteristic of Panasonic fixed lenses is that a smaller sensor generally allows for more zoom capability. This is the case with the UX180 which boasts 20x zoom while the DVX200 has 13x. But the larger sensor of the DVX200 allows for shallower depth of field. So the question is...do you want a more cinematic look that the DVX200 can provide, or do you shoot ENG or sports where the UX180 would be better suited? As for low light capabilities, can't really comment on that since the UX180 hasn't been thoroughly tested by professionals yet. Good luck with your buy!
I purchased this camera via your link and right of the bat the view finder is completely intermittent. I have to press my eye really hard against it and the LCD viewfinder screen goes off and on. What I'm I doing wrong?
pixelreflex1 Hi, that is one of the issues I presented in the video. If you watch, the viewfinder and the LCD screen are never on at the same time. And since the viewfinder overrides the LCD screen when the proximity sensor on the viewfinder senses your eye (or anything else in front of it) it will shut off your lcd. You can override that in the menu by mapping a user button to toggle the viewfinder and the LCD screen, but you still will never be able to have both on the same time. It will always switch back-and-forth.
I'm sorry if I didn't explain it better but that is not the issue. I knew about that issue. The issue that I am having is that when I press my eye on the back view finder it does not work correctly. It goes on and off.
I have and Panasonic as not replied at all. Another issue is that I can't get PPCC 17 to recognize the video file. It plays the audio just fine but no video. Anyone else having this issue?

Awesome camera but "Fixed lens" is a bit naughty.. I would much rather something modular so a broken lens is going to be like a 600 dollar fix instead of 3400... That's puts me off a little bit
Possibly, although it's very robust. Would also be a good idea to add a UV filter to it so that you never scratch it, and it may protect it further. I still own the camera and use it for most of my longform recording/2nd angle interview purposes, no broken lens yet!

+Gerald Prost It's definitely darker than the 150 using the same settings, but gain can bring the 200 back in the game. Motion with high gain is a pretty undesirable image, but a more still shot with high gain is pretty good with the 200. I've heard the lens is what's holding this camera back in terms of low light capability. It chokes down a bit when you zoom, but not a horrendous amount. You can see some of my extreme low-light condition examples with my most recent wedding video trailer on my other channel, Sandhills Videography.
I decided to purchase the Panasonic PX 270. I thought it was going to be much the same as the HPX 250 but it is much better. It is not 4K but it does an impressive job for the things I'm asking it to do. Gerry in Calgary.
Something that has been bothering me, is the latency on the screens, when hooked into a video switcher, with perhaps other cameras, is there any lag? If not then this camera i could buy. That is the only thing I am worried about, some people say its laggy and it wont sync, some say its not an issue.
+chrisw443 According to Jonathon Lawrence's review there's apparently about a 6 frame lag, which they also mentioned is common (4-6 frame lag) on most cameras in this price range.

there is a jvc that is also a 4k cam that I am probably gonna get it looks amazing, its a bit cheaper, no lag ! the lens is a bit soft and no uhd 60, but good enough for me!
Hello, does anyone know if the manual focus can be locked when working in auto mode? When I am focusing manually in auto mode the DVX200 tries continually to autofocus. Only if I change to manual mode can I lock the manual focus in a face, for example. Thank you.
bonjour could you compare PANSONIC DVX200 with the new panasonic UX 90 , UX 180 and HCX1… DVX200 has 4/3 sensor but do not have HDR recording mode and the others panasonic have 1inch sensor but maybe with HDR the quality of pictures are nearly the same …..and even maybe in low light (concert , street , sunset…)…thank you very much… Tobias from caribbean

I would suggest it for wedding use if you have a second camera with better lo-lite. It is not a good camera if it's the only camera you'll use. A pro wedding videographer wouldn't show up to a wedding without a secondary \backup anyway, so that shouldn't be unreasonable. In my case, my hmc150 has better lo-lite, but a simple on-camera LED takes care of most close-up lo-lite situations for either cam during the reception. I would only be concerned about a dark ceremony when it's impossible to get close enough to utilize an LED. That's when I would use the 150 for the close-up and the 200 for the wide. The 200 has very bright gain settings, but you have to be careful about the noise that comes with it.

+Mo Me Hello, For your budget, you'd be better off with the DVX200. You'd have to buy a few lenses for the C100 since the body itself is already more costly than the DVX200. Of course if you already have lenses, the C100 may be your better buy. Just depends on what you already own. According to spec sheets, the C100 doesn't have 4K recording. If that's not important to you, fine. However, having 4K capability will future-proof your camera as that resolution becomes more prevalent in the future. For wedding videography, most couples are still fine with receiving DVDs or the occasional Blu-Ray, neither of which can show 4K resolution.
Gotcha. Well, I don't know anything about the low-light performance of the C100. If you already have the lenses though, the C100 may be your best bet. I'd assume with the great sensor of the C100 and your lens choices, you'd be able to get a better low-light performance out of the C100.
I use it with a cheap Samsung EVO 32GB card (48MB/s) and it works well in 4K. With a Sony 32GB (40MB/s) it will stop after a few minutes. So it dont have to be a "very" fast card. ;)

+Rajesh Lad Thanks for the comment! I'm actually using it in a live situation this weekend, live streaming to UA-cam via webcast through SDI. I believe we are using the BlackMagic Design recorder. The audio line in would be XLR, which can fill channels but is not true stereo. To get stereo, record externally unless you have a left AND a right XLR feed. I would always go for Class 10 SD card with this camera. U1 works well for most HD functions and some UHD functions, but a U3 is recommended for full 4K. Yes, IDX makes a larger capacity battery specifically for the DVX200 and similar cameras that are much larger and heavier than the battery the camera comes with. AMAZING battery life...I've never actually run it completely out before...I'd estimate 5-6 hours continuous runtime with it.
+Ed Ricker Vlogs I'll take that back around stereo. If you had a left xlr feed and a right xlr feed, you could get stereo using both channels. Rarely do I have that luxury however.
Oooh I gotcha. No didn't ask Panasonic...it seems they're just experimenting. It's probably good for certain users, but just not me :( Each person shoots differently, can't please us all I guess.
There is a slight lag between the action and the viewfinder, so you may be at a disadvantage if you're zoomed in for tight shots. I've also heard some people talk about how they'd prefer a better zoom. It's fine for what I do, but it may not be satisfactory to zoom in on sports action from far way. You could probably determine how necessary that is for you by how you normally shoot.

Interesting and nicely thought out review. It sounded scripted, and like you had a cheatsheet. I saw a lot of edit cuts and a few jump cuts that were used to improve the flow and continuity of the presentation.
I like that it was a review based on your experience with the unit since you bought it. So many presenters just trying jotting and jogging through all of the features and settings. You did this, but offered some informative critique of the unit based on your knowledge and experience. I really like that. It was an honest and very biased review since it was based solely on your experiences as the owner. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a biased review. Far too many people try very hard to offer an "unbiased review" of products. You did not. Because of that I learned a lot about what you had to say.
This video is over 3 years old, and so the info is out of date for this unit. They are now selling for about "$2445.00" new, and not the "$4500.00" you suggested. Panasonic is putting out newer units and this one is approaching the realm of becoming obsolete, and perhaps, soon to be outmoded. Regardless, I see the DVX200 with years of useful life as a video camcorder.
I skimmed through and watched dozens of reviews, mostly the same-ole, same-ole approach of just trying to highlight the features and functions. Your approach was very refreshing and informative, thank you... And, I like the fact that you took the time to work with a script, or a cheatsheet and, you took the time to study and learn about your product. You also did an excellent job with editing your video, a testament to your working knowledge about post production. So many presenters try to make their films "unscripted and on-the-fly," an approach that almost never works. The result are always poorly made videos, poor grammar, stammering, stumbling, fumbling and a whole lot of hemming and hawing... those kinds of films usually makes videos exceptionally hard to watch, and I usually will quit.
I almost quit watching when you started out with the all too common intro of "Hey Guys, Ed Here?" I hate those intros. They are not professional introductions, and are a definite sign of an amateur filmmaker/vlog-maker. I have a strong aversion to such intros because they are, 1, diminutive, and 2, very unprofessional. But I decided to try watching your video anyway, despite its unprofessional introduction. I'm glad I did because you presented so much valuable information, and you answered a lot of questions that I had about this unit. You gave me enough information to come to a conclusion about what kind of camera I want to buy... I'm poor. Money is always a premium, so I can't afford much of anything. Now I am leaning towards a Panasonic DVX200, and it's because of your presentation. Thank you.

We have just upgraded from a HMC151 to a DVX200 so this video is very interesting indeed. Only had it it day and was driven mad by the diopter/LCD cutoff feature!

I still use the HMC150 for some gigs, especially some cheaper event videography like recitals or pageants where I can't justify the wear-and-tear and added runtime on the new DVX200. I just shot a wedding yesterday where the HMC150 and DVX200 worked in tandem as a 2-camera coverage of the ceremony.
I noticed the DVX200 appears to white-balance slightly different than the HMC150. Same room, same white card, but the DVX200 had more of an orange glow to everything whereas the HMC150 had more of a deeper red wine-colored balance. What's your experience with that?

We have had nothing but problems with our DVX200. It changes shutter speed from 1/50 to 1/125 randomly. The fan jams and makes a horrid noise, It off to PAN for repair after 4 months.The inbuilt scenefiles are terrible, it took us weeks to create a workable scenefile. The IS is worse than our HPX200 P2 cameras. focussing in HD is very hard, can't trust focus peaking (much better in UHD though) autofocus is terrible (yes, some people still use autofocus now and then:)) The camera is way heavier than other cameras in it's class.
On the positive side it has some amazing features you wont find in other cameras, like: auto focus racking which works incredibly well. Great review, hopefully you wont get to many problems with yours

Were you aware that you just have to pull outward on the "adjustment knob/cam" to adjust the tightness for the camer's mounting plate? Pulling out on it "reclocks" it so that you can then tighten it all the way down. Very common little thing few people know about. I can't imagine that tripod not having that option. Great video!

A note about low light - it's not great, but if you have a couple of on camera LEDs you can use either on the cam or around the room, you can get good shots. Obviously with a full lighting setup you'll be fine. It's not a low light hero, but that's due to the lens being 2.8-4.5. Tricks you can use - lower shutter speed subtly, stay as wide as possible and keep to 2.8 and, last resort, up the gain in increments. The issue here is that the gain applies noise reduction and will smooth out skin tones. You can also change picture profile, sometimes you might find a profile better suited to the situation you're in or one based in a less contrasty gamma. It's doable, but it can be a headache.
+passthesalt2000 I've got the Switronix TL-50 and plan to do just that. Still, after all you've mentioned including matching gain levels, it's still darker than a HMC150 (which I never thought was particularly good in lo-lite to begin with). It has higher gain capability than the 150, but I hate adding the noise that comes with gain. I suppose I just assumed that a larger sensor meant better lo-lite, but I guess that's not the case.
+Ed Ricker It's mainly because of the lens. The sensor still has a positive effect on the overall image, but the lens holds it back. Unfortunately, most of the new fixed lens cams with larger sensors (including the new Sony Z150) have similarly slow and ramping lenses, so there's not much that can be done with it at the moment in terms of how technology is progressing. Maybe in a year or so they'll find a way to put a faster lens on a large sensor cam. I was also disappointed when I put it up against my old z5 which was never that great in low light but opens to f1.6 and has a longer zoom range, but when viewing the footage side by side, the DVX200 is the clear winner. So it's a case of trying to work around the limitations a package like this gives you, however frustrating.

I am currently filming everything with my Panasonic GH4 and was thinking about this camera as well for fast autofocus and good IS. But the price is (still) too high. Hopefully next year this camera will be cheaper on the used market. What worries me is the low light capability (which is not good on my GH4 as well).
+Lutte Kikker Thanks for the comment! I used the DVX200 a few times recently at wedding receptions during the evening. I've found that using the High Sensitivity mode, it increases the available gain without adding a terrible amount of noise (besides noise already present from gain in low-light situations). It was workable, though not impressively so. Just thought I'd let you know my experience.

What people forget about this camera is that it is a jack of all trades but not a master of one! For instance it is one of the few camcorders on the market that can imprint date and time into the video,...a requirement for recording depositions! With the right scene file, this camera is pretty good. You just need a lot of time learning it. It is not a DSLR but who wants all the ancillary equipment, audio recorders, power supplies, etc, when you can have something that works, all in one.

Great hands on review Ed! I've got a GH5 at the moment but for the run and gun shooting I do (Action sports, mainly motocross) I need a true camcorder. Messing around with manual zoom, poor auto focus and different lenes is not optimal when im out in the desert and have one take to get the shot. After watching your review and many others I'm convinced that the dvx200 would be a great camcorder to add to my filming gear setup. I'll use my GH5 for more cinematic shots and situations where a small camera is needed. Thanks again for the "real world situation" review 👌

With that being a manfrotto tripod head, you should be able to adjust the extra play on the locking screw that you mentioned. Simply pull away from the head and turn. They are spring loaded to make that adjustment easy. Thanks for the review!
I wish that were the case, but that pin broke a few years back so I had to glue it into place. I guess it's my fault! Anyway I have the 504HD on order just to be safe.

For solving the issue about noise in low light (lower the detail level slightly, did +value for coring, went down to - for the chroma level, master ped at - value, cine gamma and the cine color matrix. You can choose the value as you like), I recommend to create a scene file for low light and another for rest of the situations. there are 6 values. I use just 2 :)
After I made one settings that I like, I rename it and copy it to other camcorders with an SD card.
For high gain/iso situations we must add "noise removal" "noise reduction" (in photo or in video) but we cannot use that settings in the sun because the people will looks like "wax figures".
skin tones always off - my choice.
hmc has a F 1.6 and dvx F 2.8. try to put in low light situation both camcorder with the same scene file settings, and set both to f2.8, same shutter, same gain, same ND :D. Don't use open because hmc is open at 1.6!
And if you like give me comparison pictures with WaveForm Monitor on and off! :)
We had 3.of these for doing IMAG in a high end casino. Not super impressed with the auto focus at all. Its would sometimes completey fail to take focus at all, and especially in low light/stage conditions HH down in the pit. Never had a problem from back of house on sticks though. The image is definitely razor sharp and flawless in 1080

Get the replacement camera plate lock from a Benro Pan head it comes out and resets to tighten more and to avoid oversize cameras

That's true. 28 minutes at 60FPS at UHD for a 32GB card is pretty low. If you had two 128GB cards in both slots set for relay recording, that could get you about 4 hours of continuous recording. My thinking though is that I want the best quality when I shoot 4k, so I'm not necessarily concerned with that. I would just buy more cards and enjoy the high quality 4k.
Of course for weddings, recitals, and other long form recording, I don't generally shoot 4k anyway. In FHD using the AVCHD codec, I can squeeze well over 2 hours out of that same 32GB card.

Apparently, OLED screens have a limited lifespan so they dim over time and the proximity sensor is a way to make sure it's not on all the time, so no, you can't have them both on at the same time, but you do get used to it.
I tried the AG-UX90, AG-UX180. Didn't really care much for those. So, I'm ordering the AG-DVX200 this weekend. I like the Orca 54 LCD hood, had to put one in the shopping cart after this video. At the moment (October 6, 2017) until December 31, 2017, you can get a $400 rebate on the DVX200, so it's really only $300 more than the AG-UX180...I'd say go for it if you want one.

pmgodfrey hiya, what is it that you didn't like about the UX180? I am trying decide between the UX and DVX at the moment and as much as I love the look of the DVX the UX180 seems to have the edge on paper at almost every level apart from a slightly smaller sensor. How are you getting on with the DVX?
I liked the UX-90 and UX-180, but the DVX200 had a slightly larger imager. While the difference in price between the UX-90 and DVX200 is large, it wasn't so bad with the UX-180 vs the DVX200 especially with the rebate being offered until December.
I downloaded and printed the guide written by Barry Green and had OfficeMax spiral bind the book so it's easy to flip through. I haven't really played with it much since I got it (too much going on), but plan to soon.

Great review, Ed! I feel better because I just purchased the same camera, and a big bag of extra goodies for $1800. It looks brand spanking new! And only because I want to learn how to shoot my film project, based on a book and screenplay I wrote. At first, all I wanted to do was write and direct, and I feel very confident and competent in those areas. I have a good cinematographer to help, but no time to teach. I want to get behind the camera as well. However, I know nothing about camera stuff. All I know is what and why I want to see something. I also know how to turn the thing on. The shoe lock on the newer 502AH Manfrotto head is ratcheted, so no fear of shoe coming loose.

Actually not necessarily...in this case, the lens limits it a bit. You'd find better low light performance in full-frame DSLRs with switchable lenses unfortunately. But bumping up the DVX's gain will usually allow for low light situations, but a little grain will be present as well due to the high gain.
Nice video. Just a comment on the close proximity of the tripod's tightening lever to the bottom of the camera. You should be able to unscrew the tripod's tightening lever and re-position it such that it does not butt up against the camera. I did this with a Manfrotto tripod in order to accommodate an FZ1000.
That would be a perfect idea! Except that screw broke off years ago and I super glued it back on, haha. It still turns to tighten, it just doesn't move out anymore.
I had actually totally forgot I super glued it until I took a closer look. So it's my fault!

+jadesroom If you already have lenses, the FS5 is a great option. For me, I've always used fixed-lens cameras, so buying something like the FS5 would be more expensive with the accompanying lens purchases.

+Ed Ricker I don't have lenses and, therefore, purchasing a DVX200 makes more sense. Thanks for the lead on the Glidecam. I ordered one this week. I like using the SteadyTracker for something quick without a lot of set up time; but since the V between the thumb and the index finger acts as the gimbal, it's definitely not as smooth as a Glidecam.

Hi Jeremy, thanks for watching. I've really grown to enjoy this camera, and little issues with the reflective/automatic switching of the lcd screen have become easier to deal with. I still get caught by the auto LCD feature sometimes, but I actually prefer to have it on auto switch just so that I can raise the EVF to my eye quickly without having to press a button.
The OIS is still great, and I've appreciated it during run-and-gun environments when a tripod wasn't available or accessible.
The camera is perhaps a bit heavy for long handheld recording sessions, and using it with a glidecam is a bit rough on the forearm (assuming no vest), but it has still produced some great images.
The 60FPS is great across resolutions, but the 120FPS is usually too soft for my tastes. Introduces a lot of grain too, so I normally can get away with 60FPS for any slo-mo shots. Of course 60FPS crops in the sensor a bit, so you have to weigh that with your other options as well. If I was shooting a car in a confined space, I may not be able to fit the entire car in my frame at 60FPS.
Probably the biggest gripe I have now is that there is some very noticeable banding/grain in footage shot in V-Log, especially in blue sky or other gradients like on a wall indoors. I used to shoot a lot of nature shots in V-Log before I realized that I actually prefer shooting normally to reduce the banding and grain.

Unfortunately I bought the camera excited to try the V-Log feature for greater post options, but ultimately it's not worth the degradation of gradient quality. Perhaps shooting externally at 10-bit 4:2:2 would fix some of that, but spending $1000 on an external recorder is a whole 'nuther can of worms.
The camera has locked up on me once or twice and I had to pull out the battery to shut the camera off (unresponsive power switch/functions). That got me a bit nervous, but I've never actually missed a shot because of the issue.
People still compliment me on the camera! They love the look of it, and I feel like clients put more faith in my work even before having seen the footage just because of how badass the camera is. Pretty cool!

Glad I found this video! I have a vintage 2009 HMC150A myself and am thinking about this as an upgrade because as you will know, the 150's 1080P is more like 720p! You mention the low light is bad, is it bad in HD mode when its clumping pixels together to generate the image or is it bad mainly in 4k mode? I do a lot of nightclub stuff and the HMC with gain ramped right up is fine and usable, once its been through render and rerender on UA-cam you cant even tell. Last question - the Auto/Manual switch on the 150 - is there something similar on the DVX200, its sometimes quite useful for full run and gun mode. Many thanks for the video!

As for poor quality 4k, the gain can be added pretty heavy but only to a certain point without grain and degradation of quality.
I would be concerned about using this for nightclub stuff because adding gain in low light adds a lot of ghosting to the image. That might look pretty poor with a nightclub with the dancing and lights and action.

I use the Hoya HD UV 72mm for both the DVX200 and the HMC150. Great filter with no noticeable darkening of the picture.

hi ed just for info on your manfrotto pan head you say you can't tighten the plate because it hits the camera next time when it hits the camera pull the plastic knob towards you its spring loaded and you can then move it back and retighten it up I get this problem quite often but you can normally get just the right position with a bit of trial and error and get the sliding plate tight,hope this helps

Hey Ed. I just bought this camera today. I tried some indoor and outdoor shots during day for both tests. Wow the noise in the shots I got was horrible. I did the latest update for the firmware and that may have helped but only slightly. Can you offer any tips for how I can get cleaner footage ? Btw the shots I took were at 0db gain. Is there a noise reduction setting or something? Any help would be great
+Pete Larson What Scene file are you using? SCN4 is the worst for noise in my experience. Also, in dark scenes, the DVX200 still has some noticeable noise regardless. I've never had an issue with noise in the day or even in well-lit indoor scenes.
Can you shoot a test so we can check it out and see if maybe your camera is operating differently from ours?
Have you tried the HC X1? for sale in November '16. Seems to have the edge on all the predecessors - especially in low light.

do you mean the autofocus point? not really sure, I use manual focus almost 100% of the time. a guy by the name of Barry Green has put out some dvx200 videos on UA-cam that may address that.

Which is the maximum capacity of SD memories compatible to this camera? I want to buy this camera but I got some doubts about filming time and other stuff.

It supports SDHC memory cards (4 GB to 32 GB) and SDXC memory cards (48 GB to 128 GB)
I use 128GB SDXC, and since it has dual ports it can relay from one to the next for a total of 256GB.
Depending on what resolution/codec you're shooting in, you can get quite a bit of recording time. 256GB would give over 10 hours of MP4 HD, and about 23 hours of AVCHD.

So I know you're not an expert on the camera but figured you were very responsive last time around (I purchased the 504HD btw).
The camera keeps turning on the ND filter automatically, even on manual setting with the ND slider to off (and I've turned off the auto-iris just in case), do you know if there is anyway to disable this? It somewhat ruined my last webcast, since I had to shoot a board meeting where a projection screen was directly behind the board, yes the screen would have been blown-out without the auto-ND but I'd rather have a blown-out irrelevant screen than a way-too-dark subject (the panel members). Can't seem to find any information on the auto-ND aspect to the camera, and makes the ND button seem pointless if it's just going to set it to what it wants regardless of the user setting.
Wow, no I've never had an issue with any sort of auto-ND feature. ND should only kick in when you hit the ND filter switch, no other time. Only suggestion I have would be to ensure you have your auto-switch off, but I'm sure you do at this point.
Maybe if you could buy a large antiglare phone screen protector, you could cut it to shape for the LCD?

Ed Ricker Yeah you really want a glass screen protector, the plastic ones don't look or feel good from experience. I had a look around and there's a site that sells the protectors cut to the size that suits you. Only thing to be careful of is that the glass can be prone to cracking when being put on, it's tough as nails once it's on. Here's the link to the site, hopefully that fits the bill?

Yeah not just this camera but so many cameras even the Atomos Shogun I use is so reflective it's murder to shoot outside. Just wish this camera had a faster lens. Say F 2.8 on the long end zoom. F 1.5 at the start although I am a fan of constant aperture. Another thing what happened to the super expensive P2 cards Panasonic promised to support far into the future. I was waiting for years for a 4K P2 camera and ended up buying 2 Gh4's with Shoguns. Maybe the next round. But there is a lot of things I like about the DVX.
+reticulan5 I would looove to have a shogun. That surprises me to hear that it's so reflective too. I would gladly put up with more of a matte surface if it increased the ability to use it outdoors. I feel like touch screens have all gotten so shiny that any finger prints show up way more than they should.

Ed Ricker We are still having a bright hot weather here in Oz. My daughter who is a film graduate and I shot a wedding 2 weeks ago. The outside footage I missed judge on a few shots. (overexposed). Lucky there was plenty of shots to use and my daughter had a eye cup on her camera. But still a lot of good shoots ruined that could of made a better wedding video. I'm also angry at most screens these days that includes I Phones etc. Why make it so bright. My Mac Book Pro same deal. I still have my 2008 17 inch. That one has a beautiful matt screen.

Hey! Still like it a lot. I've gotten relatively used to the couple gripes I had in the video.
I've admittedly been thinking about going the way of the Canon EOS or Black Magic to get a more cinematic style with larger sensors, but the DVX200 performs well for what it's intended to do.
If you're comparing the UX180 to the DVX200, I'd highly suggest the DVX200. I have the UX90 which I know is lesser than the UX180, but it still has some features that are identical to the UX180. Namely, the 1-inch CMOS sensor. I really appreciate the DVX200's micro 4/3" sensor over the 1-inch CMOS sensor. You can really see the difference in the talking portion of the videos here:

The framing doesn't match up perfectly since I didn't record those 2 videos with the intention of comparing the cameras, but you can really see the difference both in color and in depth of field. I didn't try to match the colors either...I just selected SCN5 for both color profiles and white balanced to a card. You can really get an idea how different the cameras look with similar settings. I think I'm using one extra side light for the UX90 video though. Also, I was recording 4k DCI with the DVX200, but you get the idea.

The focus changes on you even if you're in manual and not touching the focus ring? That's quite odd...not sure why it would do that. Your focus Auto/Manual switch is definitely on Manual along with the the camera's master Auto/Manual switch? Just checking....
Random question here. I bought the dvx200 to use with my 2 Gh4 cameras And received a used one instead of new. Long story, quick question. How do you playback files on the camera? I see no button or menu item to do so. Obviously I am missing it. I don't have the manuals and cant figure it out. Had to record all day on Ninja flame and trust the local recordings were good. Any help would be amazing!!!

I've been shooting with my HVX200 for a while and was thinking about getting one of these as a nice UHD upgrade (dat manual zoom tho). Just wondering, does it record all audio channels like the HVX or is it just the two that the switches are set to?
Hey, thanks for the message. The DVX200 only records the two channels that the switches are set to. So both channels could be Input 1, both 2, one of each, or a combination of one input and one internal mic, or all internal mics. Just two options at a time however.

Any ideas on a suitable tripod head? That looks like the 503, we were thinking about the 504HD but maybe not if there's that locking issue on it as well.
+Phillip Killion I just bought the 504HD, and it's PERFECT for this camera. It's much wider than the 503HD and doesn't have the locking issue. The 504HD comes with a very long camera plate though which I decided not to use. I prefer a shorter camera plate because a longer one interferes with balance fine-tuning on a glidecam (regardless of the camera attached to it).

You can see the Micro 4/3" of the DVX200 is bigger than the 1" sensor of the UX180.
A characteristic of Panasonic fixed lenses is that a smaller sensor generally allows for more zoom capability. This is the case with the UX180 which boasts 20x zoom while the DVX200 has 13x. But the larger sensor of the DVX200 allows for shallower depth of field.
So the question is...do you want a more cinematic look that the DVX200 can provide, or do you shoot ENG or sports where the UX180 would be better suited?
As for low light capabilities, can't really comment on that since the UX180 hasn't been thoroughly tested by professionals yet.

Perhaps a kind of camera that's not fixed lens like the DVX200. Most fixed lens cameras seem to suffer from low light issues.
Is the internal recording 8-bit 4:2:0?

The lens is variable aperture from F2.8 to F4.5.
I purchased this camera via your link and right of the bat the view finder is completely intermittent. I have to press my eye really hard against it and the LCD viewfinder screen goes off and on. What I'm I doing wrong?
pixelreflex1 Hi, that is one of the issues I presented in the video. If you watch, the viewfinder and the LCD screen are never on at the same time. And since the viewfinder overrides the LCD screen when the proximity sensor on the viewfinder senses your eye (or anything else in front of it) it will shut off your lcd. You can override that in the menu by mapping a user button to toggle the viewfinder and the LCD screen, but you still will never be able to have both on the same time. It will always switch back-and-forth.
I'm sorry if I didn't explain it better but that is not the issue. I knew about that issue. The issue that I am having is that when I press my eye on the back view finder it does not work correctly. It goes on and off.
Still not working but I am not using the eye piece view finder.
That's odd, perhaps there's a problem with it? Couldn't say...contact Panasonic for some ideas is my suggestion
I have and Panasonic as not replied at all. Another issue is that I can't get PPCC 17 to recognize the video file. It plays the audio just fine but no video. Anyone else having this issue?

Awesome camera but "Fixed lens" is a bit naughty.. I would much rather something modular so a broken lens is going to be like a 600 dollar fix instead of 3400... That's puts me off a little bit
Possibly, although it's very robust. Would also be a good idea to add a UV filter to it so that you never scratch it, and it may protect it further.
I still own the camera and use it for most of my longform recording/2nd angle interview purposes, no broken lens yet!
Thanks for doing this. I would be interested to shoot the DVX200 next to my HPX250 and my AF100. How is the lens? How bright is it? How much does it choke down when you zoom in? How well does it match the 150? Gerry in Calgary.
+Gerald Prost It's definitely darker than the 150 using the same settings, but gain can bring the 200 back in the game. Motion with high gain is a pretty undesirable image, but a more still shot with high gain is pretty good with the 200.
I've heard the lens is what's holding this camera back in terms of low light capability. It chokes down a bit when you zoom, but not a horrendous amount. You can see some of my extreme low-light condition examples with my most recent wedding video trailer on my other channel, Sandhills Videography.
I decided to purchase the Panasonic PX 270. I thought it was going to be much the same as the HPX 250 but it is much better. It is not 4K but it does an impressive job for the things I'm asking it to do. Gerry in Calgary.

Something that has been bothering me, is the latency on the screens, when hooked into a video switcher, with perhaps other cameras, is there any lag? If not then this camera i could buy. That is the only thing I am worried about, some people say its laggy and it wont sync, some say its not an issue.
+chrisw443 According to Jonathon Lawrence's review there's apparently about a 6 frame lag, which they also mentioned is common (4-6 frame lag) on most cameras in this price range.
+Phillip Killion Thanks for the info Phillip. There is a slight lag with the LCD/EVF but not very noticeable. I don't know if it would affect camera switching or other outputs at all...haven't tested that far.

Hello, does anyone know if the manual focus can be locked when working in auto mode? When I am focusing manually in auto mode the DVX200 tries continually to autofocus. Only if I change to manual mode can I lock the manual focus in a face, for example. Thank you.
Focus and auto mode seem to be attached unfortunately. Auto mode is truly auto mode and can't be overridden with a focus switch.

bonjour could you compare PANSONIC DVX200 with the new panasonic UX 90 , UX 180 and HCX1… DVX200 has 4/3 sensor but do not have HDR recording mode and the others panasonic have 1inch sensor but maybe with HDR the quality of pictures are nearly the same …..and even maybe in low light (concert , street , sunset…)…thank you very much…

Hi mate, would you suggest this for weddings...? As you said it poor for low light?
I would suggest it for wedding use if you have a second camera with better lo-lite. It is not a good camera if it's the only camera you'll use. A pro wedding videographer wouldn't show up to a wedding without a secondary \backup anyway, so that shouldn't be unreasonable. In my case, my hmc150 has better lo-lite, but a simple on-camera LED takes care of most close-up lo-lite situations for either cam during the reception. I would only be concerned about a dark ceremony when it's impossible to get close enough to utilize an LED. That's when I would use the 150 for the close-up and the 200 for the wide. The 200 has very bright gain settings, but you have to be careful about the noise that comes with it.

For your budget, you'd be better off with the DVX200. You'd have to buy a few lenses for the C100 since the body itself is already more costly than the DVX200. Of course if you already have lenses, the C100 may be your better buy. Just depends on what you already own.
According to spec sheets, the C100 doesn't have 4K recording. If that's not important to you, fine. However, having 4K capability will future-proof your camera as that resolution becomes more prevalent in the future. For wedding videography, most couples are still fine with receiving DVDs or the occasional Blu-Ray, neither of which can show 4K resolution.

Gotcha. Well, I don't know anything about the low-light performance of the C100. If you already have the lenses though, the C100 may be your best bet. I'd assume with the great sensor of the C100 and your lens choices, you'd be able to get a better low-light performance out of the C100.
I use it with a cheap Samsung EVO 32GB card (48MB/s) and it works well in 4K. With a Sony 32GB (40MB/s) it will stop after a few minutes. So it dont have to be a "very" fast card. ;)

Yes. It only stops when the card is full. Its a U1. The camera says "it will maybe not work" but it works fine.

The audio line in would be XLR, which can fill channels but is not true stereo. To get stereo, record externally unless you have a left AND a right XLR feed.
I would always go for Class 10 SD card with this camera. U1 works well for most HD functions and some UHD functions, but a U3 is recommended for full 4K.
Yes, IDX makes a larger capacity battery specifically for the DVX200 and similar cameras that are much larger and heavier than the battery the camera comes with. AMAZING battery life...I've never actually run it completely out before...I'd estimate 5-6 hours continuous runtime with it.
+Ed Ricker Vlogs I'll take that back around stereo. If you had a left xlr feed and a right xlr feed, you could get stereo using both channels. Rarely do I have that luxury however.

would you recommend this camera for sports like football?
There is a slight lag between the action and the viewfinder, so you may be at a disadvantage if you're zoomed in for tight shots. I've also heard some people talk about how they'd prefer a better zoom. It's fine for what I do, but it may not be satisfactory to zoom in on sports action from far way. You could probably determine how necessary that is for you by how you normally shoot.
