Just so everyone is aware that’s absolutely not how it worked.
We already know certain actions have tangible benefits for the soul. Things like charity and the like. The Catholic Church merely defined exactly what would happen for the state of your soul if you donated with a contrite heart to the Cathedral Construction Fund. Usually the benefits involved the reduction of temporal punishments suffered after death in purgatory, which is essentially the antechamber to heaven, where any lingering effects of sin are burned away.
There was never a “pay your way out of sin” policy in the Church. The only way to remit your sins has always been through the Sacrament of Penance. No amount of good work or faith will save you without either the sacrament of confession or the grace of perfection contrition.

Unironically, Jesus already paid the full price of ALL sin. All you have to do is accept His gift given freely. That's literally it. No amount of charity or kindness saves your soul, only Jesus. That being said, we do good unto others because goodness and charity are their own rewards and doing good is how we show faith to God since that is why he gave us free will: to choose good over evil despite the inevitability of our tresspassing and failing to live up to God's standards. He loves us just the same, regardless.
tl;dr good works are not why you get saved

@@cheifhog2552 Sounds a lot like that's exactly how it worked😭😭 That's just not how the church put it and yeah why would they. It's still just donating your way out of posthumous divine torment.
Organized religion is such a joke, NO scripture mentions indulgences. Christ the Redeemer would've flipped over some tables for this bs

I’m genuinely so tired of you people pushing what is literally just moral relativism with a Christian coat of paint and then proclaiming yourselves righteous. It’s genuinely sickening and shows how little you understand the faith you claim to uphold. There’s dozens, hundreds of references of individuals being judged on their faith and their deeds. The Book of the Apocalypse goes over in excruciating detail exactly what people are doing wrong in their respective congregations and demands repentance of them for their salvation. Luther literally had to butcher the Bible to even remotely justify Sola Fide. If he had his way you wouldn’t even have James or The Apocalypse in Protestant bibles.
Christ’s sacrifice bought our freedom, but we MUST accept it through repentance and by the changing of our lives to actually make it salvific.

No it isn’t. If you donated without having any remorse or did so before committing a sin as a means of paying the debt ahead of time nothing would happen because in order for any kind of grace to be conferred upon you, contrition must be present.
As for your other criticisms the scripture isn’t the authority and never has been. Christ left a Church, who then compiled the scripture to be used in the liturgy. So I don’t care if you personally don’t find a justification for the concept in there, your opinion is irrelevant. The Church Christ instituted does and as St. Augustine said “Rome has spoken”. Regardless I’ll play this game. Christ gave his authority to his apostles and as a consequence man has the authority to forgive the eternal punishment of sin through apostolic succession. Therefore if man can remit the eternal punishment which is the more serious punishment, then he can obviously remit the less grievous punishment by the same authority. Hence where indulgences come from. The Church using its authority defines certain actions, prayers and practices as beneficial for the remission of and recovery from sin.
If you don’t like organized religion, then you don’t like Christ because he founded one. His retinue was very well ordered and defined, his doctrine was clear and has only gotten clearer as time progresses.
