The Chinese space industry is incredibly reckless: allowing "static" fires to launch their rocket, dropping stages containing toxic materials over populated areas and now trashing low Earth orbit. The international community needs to do whatever it can to bring them into line.
Sort of like their approach to climate change. And Amazon products.
LOL, that's nothing compare to USA, at least no one is stranded in the Chinese Space Station.
@@LLAALALA That we Know of....
China's value of human life, current, and future is not on par with Western cultures. Isn't that the basic problem?
@@otpyrcralphpierre1742 Is this were we are going? OK, to argue at your level, the debris convers in the video is actually created by Starlink and this is just a cover story by the west.
I hope you see how meaningless your reply is.
FWIW: I find the concepts of _"Communist China"_ and _"risk assessment"_ being combined is somewhat ironic.
“Protecting cultural heritage in outer space.” We should have never removed objective thought from the school systems.
We need Space Roombas
Spoombas?
There ya go! Your own million dollar idea!
America is just full of bull.
No need for roomba there, space is quite safe for the real space travelers from China and Russia
@@morganoverbay8783 Naaaa, it's just my 2cents worth.😃
Boeings has one big piece of space junk in orbit right now.
😂 Still attached to the ISS though ...
Keyword, ONE, piece. Still intact.
Thanks again Ellie.
You are so welcome!
Those uncontrolled reentries of Long March 5 core stages are scary. And those poor Chinese villagers... don't breathe the spicy smoke...
I heard that men who breathe it become Captain China. It’s basically Captain America from Wish.
Great vid, Miss Ellie. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
At least a Chinese rocket made SPACE debris this time instead of the usual Earth debris
Pollution? Cannot parse.
Yeah, I'm confused too. How is that better?
His brain has laid flat. 🤦
This interview was eye opening for me. I knew there were lawyers who specialized in space but I didn't think there were any with such zeal. I couldn't help but imagine an international group of space lawyers with a religious dedication to keeping our planetary orbit safe. That's inspiring and hopefully infectious to hungry legal minds.
Need more info about this launch. Was this the same "private" Chinese company had that static fire launch fiasco?
No, that is a different Chinese government sanctioned company working on a "clone" of the Falcon 9. (Can you say, "industrial espionage"?) This rocket, a Long March 6, is an official "government" launch and program.
Thanks for this report, I always think about this problem.
Like watching a series such as 20/20. Nice job champ.
Awesome interview Ellie
The ISS has one big debris stuck on it
We need a fleet of small autonomous robots, with hall effect engines, activly scanning for all the tiny debris and intercepting high speed pieces.
An interesting engineering challange.
This is the most awesome youtube video I have seen in a long time, Thank you Ellie!
Wow, thank you!

Just like Earth lawyers, except their rates are astronomical 😬

I agree on everything Michelle Hanlon said there is definitely a lot of garbage floating around and potentially damage a vehicle
Debris has crossed my mind as a cause to Starliner's situation.
Negative. Just plain old corporate incompetence there on behalf of the big B.
@@yevgeny79 but it does seem odd that these mishaps are happening more frequently. The only thing we have evidence that is happening more frequently is we are putting more stuff into orbit.
Also private space programs... This never happened this often before because there were only a handful of organizations before. And they were all governments. Till recently. A company will not be as cautious. Or as thorough. They can take more risks. Why would they not? Risk is cheap.
I wonder if the debris will be a danger to Alien spacecraft ?
Wow, wow, that's it. Now more than ever, extra care must be taken on spacecraft that are going into low-Earth orbit. Thanks Ellie, good article. ❤️🌹🌟👏
Enjoyed the video, on a personal note, I like your current makeup, especially your eyes.
Oh thank you!
Woah Ellie. New logo rocks!
That's awesome she's into "lunar governance" idk why but that gives me goosebumps in a good way lol
liking the new avatar , great video 💥🚀
Glad you like it!
I foresee the need in the very near future..of Earth orbiting 'space-tugs'... Lots of power with a battering ram nose.
These dozens of one-man craft would orbit the earth for one reason...to 'nudge' space junk out of orbit..to burn up in the atmosphere. Refuel & crew change from an orbiting SpaceX Starship tanker/station.
Just... wow.
Good responsible messages in this video, Ellie👍
Just like the Chinese, leaving their trash where ever they go even in space.
The bits that worry me most are using solid motors for orbit insertion to anything other than the low end of LEO.
Punch up a few directional lenses, sunny side up (as each bit passes or vice versa, burn the sht out of it, just enough to jet them out of orbit. At the least youll have 🧀
Just like Saturn, soon Earth will also have its own ring. A ring of garbage.
@Ellie : great show but please put the name / website of your guests under their video :)
Good point! Thanks for the tip!
_Chinese rockets_ causing _space debris..._
...and in OTHER breaking news:
*"WATER WET, SKY BLUE, FIRE HOT"* 🙄
The speed of the objects is not the issue. The "relative" speed of the objects is the issue. If all that debris was going in the same direction at the same speed at the point of collision it would be like bumping into a stroller. And really, do you think lawyers and governing are going to bring the solution? How about some plain ole common sense and golden rule. I don't have much hope. We can't even get the whole world to drive on the same side of the road. And lawyers and governance haven't fixed that in over 100 years.
That and stop russia from blowing up defunct satellites with earth to space rockets would help alot !
Ellie, you are becoming a big deal....
Wow- thank you!!
SpaceX will need to start taking positive action to remove space debris. If Elon can't fix it, than who can?
But how? Most pieces are tiny and spread out over huge distances. But i agree that we should deorbit all the large pieces as soon as possible.
Bumbling negligent bureaucracy is a bad system for organizing a space program... which draws a parallel between this and the Starliner debacle.
About the Kessler syndrome. I call it the "We'll fix it later and get the tax payer to fit the bill" debate.
By the way, all claims of "China is reckless" should be balanced with "What has your country done?". SpaceX is thinking "let's avoid creating junk" when the actual focus should be "let's clean up the junk, no matter who did it".
I also have to quote Frank Zappa in his song "The Dangerous Kitchen" : "Who the F wants to clean it?". Pretty apt lyrics if you ask me ...
Everything the CCP touches turns into crap. BTW, I think we should start sharing the translated names of their vehicles...it will be very educational.
Is it more ideological or related to body parts and/or functions?
@@EMichaelBall I don't know other than the Long March which is a reference to Chinese communist ideology. I keep meaning to search out translations. At the very least, there's no need to embarrass ourselves trying to pronounce such an inscrutable language.
800km???
Do the Chinese reimburse people who have had property damaged by falling boosters ? The booster shown in this video was trailing orange smoke which means hypergolic propellant. Highly toxic. I wonder if anyone has been hurt breathing the stuff ?
Clean-up on space we as people of earth, we need to make a way of cleaning the junk 😔
Like Starlink itself isn't a substantial debris field.
Skylab anyone? Brought down over Australia, despite months of denials by the US of FA.
Difference between, that was 50 years ago. China is conducting its space program like it was the 1970’s, with no regard for the environment whatsoever.
@@timonsolus You seriously think the US gives a fuck about the environment?
@@uniqueaustraliandestinatio1352 : If you knew anything about the US space program, you’d know that the US doesn’t leave junk in space anymore. Modern US rockets don’t leave stages in orbit, and modern US satellites have enough thruster fuel to de orbit themselves at the end of their service life.
Meanwhile, China is still testing anti satellite missiles by firing them at old out of service satellites still in orbit, blasting them into hundreds, maybe thousands of fragments, most of which are too small to be tracked by radar.
@@uniqueaustraliandestinatio1352The US has reduced its carbon dioxide output by a huge amount. China is still building coal plants like its 1920.
@@spocko2181 Really? Does this include destruction of the Nord Stream pipeline, the biggest single release of methane into the atmosphere in history?
Do the burn up of old starlink harm the Ozone layer?
Nah, it's small change. I mean, tons (yes tons) of material burns up in our atmosphere every day, most of it "space dust", let alone a few man-made objects.
@@rosswarren436how much of that space dust is aluminum?
Fluorocarbons is what kills the Ozone. Not the 400 tonnes of natural rocks and dust per day, burning up in the upper atmosphere.
Space law... seriously? Do they have a law degree for Middle Earth or Unicorns?
Actually, working out the legalities of the utilization of space is very important for governments and private enterprise to be comfortable with investment, hence "space lawyers".
Are you seriously THAT dumb? There's very little regulation for space accountability and responsibility. With the growing number of "primitive" rockets dumping junk in space, is space law such a weird concept to you?
Best practices . . . I have yet to see China give a rat's patootie about best practices in _anything_ .
They’re not bad on their moon missions.
@@EMichaelBall Getting to the moon by any means necessary is the opposite of best practices. Mind you, NASA's policy of getting to the moon as expensively as possible isn't so great, either.
I'm sure if it were up to the rest of the world, China would be banned from launching things. I know I hear the same sort of stuff said about Russia, but at least they know what they are doing.
Very shortsighted to launch thousands and thousands of satellites - one accident can have a domino effect
Did you beat Scott Manley at his own game?!
It is good they are complaining abut Starlink. That should make them think about "their" responsibility.
Nobody is complaining about starlink. The problem is china created another mess in space.
And you think Musk launching a rapidly growing record number of satellites is any better?
What happens when SpaceX is refueling in orbit? A RUD in orbit would be catastrophic.
So rather than discussing how irresponsible this action is, you go to bUt wHaT aBoUt mAyBe SpAcEx iN the fUtUrE. You're what's wrong with the world.
I can only hope their quality of rocket engineers and culture will ensure none of such events occur.
Kessler Syndrome!🙄 I prefer my Kessler over rocks with a twist of lime.!!😉
My thought recently has been "surprise" that NASA permits its "private contractors" essentially to do their own thing regarding space suits and their "fittings" (to capsules, ships, persons, etc.) and various docking adapters (which should be two-way so craft can dock to each other as well as to targets like space stations, habitats, etc. Satellites need common access points for debris capture, de-orbiting, refueling, repair, etc. Internationally, for Russian, Chinese, American, etc. (private, public, military, etc) space craft, these should be agreed-upon standards. For example, in earth or lunar orbit or on the moon's surface, especially in the case of some emergency when international cooperation and assistance would help. I'm pretty sure there are many such "standard practices" for civil aviation and maritime activities (even though electric power frequencies, wall plugs, etc. do still differ everywhere).
Ha ha ha . Real sour grapes 🍇
Just curious, did you learn the newscaster voice or was it natural? Do you talk like this always?
She did years in TV News.
First from Québec 🥰
It’s cost effective to keep another country from exploiting space by making it a frag swarm
Elon has stuff dropping all the time it’s just as much of a concern because space x knows of the debris from their launches and does his best to cover it up like a dirty dog .
didnt the chinese test an antisatellite weapon somewhat recently
Almost 20 years ago (also in high orbit where the debris will stay for a long time), more recent have been India and Russia. The cosmonauts on ISS were probably not happy when their own country put them in danger with new debris.
I would prefer a hot nuclear reactor falling to earth make it to the surface intact than be vaporized in the atmosphere.
China, either do space correctly or stay out!!
Jeff Bezos is going to lose his 5h!# when the FAA decides he cannot put up another constalation of comms satilites.
Satellite arrays might provide some shade to help with global warming?
