Why do they keep calling us the "less-educated classes???" I and the majority of my acquaintances and friends have advanced degrees and most of us voted for Trump, not because we loved everything about his past (irrelevant) or his personality, but because we believed in his policies and his love for this country, and he supported the causes that we hold dear.
The media are full of people with intrinsically useless degrees and ALL they are able to do is spout verbal diarrhoea. So they are forever having to come up with new topics to spout on. They should go and study plumbing or something else useful.
I don't think that that writer knew what he was talking about. The DNC claims to be the voice of the voiceless: the shrieking minorities that do not produce, yet demand much; otherwise they would not screech about the need for equity for them.
They are not a voice for the most productive richest, noiseless Americans which are Asian Americans and happy rich black, brown and white people. The actual voiceless, muted Americans are poor, white and cisgender.
I have an MBA AND a CompSci degree, the latter from a liberal arts university. I am NOT less educated, just less “indoctrinated”.
Also an educated flyover country bumpkin and my degree has never helped me at all in anything. Not in getting a job, not in understanding something, nothing at all, just an expensive piece of paper hanging on the wall that means nothing except a waste of good money. I have always preferred to work with my hands and the jobs that give me the most fulfillment are filthy, hard labor jobs, like my job working on a drilling rig, or being a LRRP back in the day. The dirtier the better for my soul, lol! I try to live by 1 Thessalonians 4:11.

The interesting thing about education is that for some strange reason, most people seem to associate ones level of education with how far they progressed through traditional academia. But what about those who have learned through alternative means, or are self educated?
You mean, like our first Republican president, for example? Consistently rated the GREATEST PRESIDENT OF ALL TIME, with only about ONE YEAR, of formal schooling, he was a back country woodsman--yet he led our nation through it's greatest military and political crisis, EVER--and, assassinated, died a poor man, during his second term, in the White House--because he never used his influence and political power--for personal gain (unlike all recent Democratic Party presidents--for sure!) Yes, he was never formally educated, but as a self-educated and self-made man, "Honest Abe"--was without peer! And, he wasn't alone, either (Thomas Edison, Kaiser of Kaiser Shipyards, etc, all with little formal education.)

My wife graduated about 4 years ago with an MBA. The program for her graduation listed all the degrees being awarded. 2/3 we're for psychology/liberal arts. The most worthless degree possible. All of them started as business majors or one of the STEM fields. Then, being away from their parents for the first time, began drinking and smoking pot and ended their first semester on academic probation. Their counselor then told them how psychology was the EASIEST degree to graduate with. And a barista at Starbucks or a public school teacher was born.
Please don’t group me in with the baristas. I work so hard and the only real way of knowing I am making a difference is if a parent (once in a blue moon) emails me with thanks because I did something extra for their child, or solved a problem that the student was having. I don’t make very much money, and am expected to be chipper, happy, positive, liberal, and a whole host of other things every day. I’m a sixth grade special education teacher in MN. People need to be teachers for two weeks and then comment on what we do. I’m a Trump fan and I have to keep my mouth shut when we have to do all of the stupid trainings and money wasting classes. I see everyday the results of liberalism, and can tell you that the teachers are, for the most part, the only ones doing work in the school buildings. The more work we get, the less the kids do and still get a passing grade. The whole thing is a huge cluster f**k. We have several cultural liaisons for our school - I have never seen one and don’t know what their names are, have no idea where they are in the building and don’t have the time or energy to find out. We had one last year that was telling the black kids that they don’t have to listen to the white teachers (we have one Native American and the rest of us are white). He started problems within the student population. He still is a cultural liaison in the district - his mom is on the school board, so nobody is going to tell him he’s wrong for what he is doing. It is such a hard job and the expectations are way over the top, as far as the extra things we are expected to do daily - not having anything to do with the kids. I work from 7:20 to 3:20, then go home and work until 6:00 or 6:30 every night. I get a half hour for lunch, but teachers are expected to be in the hallways when the kids go to lunch and when they come back, so I really get 20 minutes to eat and go to the bathroom. There is no free time during the school year. The job is my life for 10 months out of the year. I rarely have time to clean my house, go to the grocery store, buy birthday gifts for people, all of the things that have to be done to keep your life in check are extra things that I don’t have the time to do. I don’t think a barista could do my job. Maybe not you either.

A fascinating analysis, for sure. As hard as it was for me, I stayed true to my major--and did graduate with a BSEE, from the Moore School of Electrical Engineering, at the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, simply because I also viewed many of those other subjects as useless. I even looked down upon the Wharton business majors (despite the fact that my father went to Wharton), simply because their courses--were so much easier, than mine. And, I used my BSEE degree, for years afterward. And I still do a lot of technical stuff, regularly. I viewed my major, as practical, having some use--but what could someone do, with an English degree, or a PolySci, or a Psych degree? Not much, as your little script clearly indicated...
I still support Trump over anything the left and most of the right have to offer. There is no guilt associated with me for supporting the man. I am also not embarrassed to say it in public either.

I remember several years ago my wife and I intentionally went to a elite house showing. Oh my talk about snobs. We would intentionally get the Realtor all built up thinking she was making a $1 million or more sale. "I'll call you Monday," my given line. Then my wife and I, laughnig at what we experienced, went to dinner at Steak 'n Shake.
I'd hate to be a real estate agent, on call at all hours 7 days a week, only to have my time and energy wasted by disingenuous people.

Honestly i went to work for the State...as a public employee for ten years my loans were forgiven...i earned well below rate for ten years at a job with benefits but low pay ( 50k for an engineer per year). So it forgave 80k in loans gave me ten years of experience in government work gave me connections and ultimately lets me live a much better life now...that government experience translated into a 200k a year raise... So....maybe put a call out for lawyers and etc to forgive their loans in 5 year term of service and put them on the boarder to process the asylum seekers etc .
Same with many of the other degrees give them forgiveness for various public service jobs... Hell make it a requirement for college graduates they must serve the public for 5 years...its a regular paid job but it forgives a portion of your loan...i mean we do it for the military already...serve and get a gi bill....why not educate and get into public service...be it parking attendants whatever...

I am currently an avid Republican and economic conservative (though not until about a dozen years ago, when I turned 60, or so), so take what I say, with a grain of salt, so to speak. But I do agree with one of your ideas: I believe that we should have mandatory service, for about 2 years, somewhere in the judicial system (either in the courts, or in the police), for all of our college graduates, both men and women, who do not enlist in the military, or the Peace Corps. And if they do so, and complete their 2 years, then maybe some college degree forgiveness. The reason for this is simple: we do not have the most scientifically or academically brilliant people, serving in our police and courts--and it shows in the high number of wrongful convictions. Liberal (Democratic Party) policies, do not help, the performance of our judicial system, either--but young, brilliant, uncommitted minds--very well might help.

I think if they decided to stay longer in service add more to the forgiveness... It provides us as a society with thousands of needed workers that sole purpose is to help catch up the back logs even if its just building inspectors for the architects and engineers... You know use their new found knowledge in a place where they can begin and get experience in their fields

In this day and age, perhaps more than any other, you can be quite well educated and well read without having a diploma. The tough part though is a person such as David Brooks has the time to ponder esoteric stuff because the education put him into an easy job. A lot of us work hard and barely have time to read a daily newspaper. Not knocking his position because that would be something to strive for, but it does have the tendency of taking you out of the reality of the masses.
I am 100% part of the "educated class" (you name it) and realized in my 20's how effete, provincial and biased they all are. Give me a hard-working, not-as-priviliged family from the Midwest or South anyday. There are many kinds of "education" by the way.

I've often been asked throughout the years, "Steve where did you graduate from?. " I answer, "Melbourne High School, Class of '77". The next question usually is, "But how do you know so much about astronomical physics?" My answer? "Independent Study" Degrees are just pieces of paper, your brain is what's important.

They all know they're the baddies. They just don't care. We all know them, they're all around us. They're the people who care more about convincing you they're a good person than they care about actually being a good person. They're defective. We've all cut them out of our lives, because at a certain point it just became too much of a headache. Even if they're family. We know who these people are. Stop being sympathetic towards them. They wouldn't return the favor.
They really believe that they're the good guys with no doubts. They have the vision that will save the world and anybody who gets in their way is evil. That was the point of redefining words. Religious cults do that.

2/3’s of Americans who don’t have a college education are in the service industry Which is extremely important and beneficial, especially if you need food service, dry cleaning, construction, your sewer system, working, fuel for your vehicle, labor loading and unloading the semis, driver’s for those semis to get your products to you, the Farmer’s raising your food, etc., let alone the people who serve on the school boards, the park boards, the fair boards, the volunteer coaches, the voters, etc. Think about that elitist’s. The same person who can fix your water heater is liable to be the same person who is managing the project of the local park, which gives the community a place to play and enjoy! These are people who know how to manage a budget and stayin budget, and discern for themselves, the asinine writings, pompous as-es!
