Just discovered Foy Vance tonight, while watching the Belfast Nashville Songwriter's Festival. This song in particular really moved me; in the performance from the BNSF Vance played it with just keyboard accompaniment, which I think cloaks the music perfectly. This performance w/ the Ulster Orchestra (a great ensemble, they record for one of the best classical labels, Naxos) is interesting. Once the Ulster players join in here the first thing that came to my mind was the movie 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind', when near the end of the film 5 tones (which is actually taken from a composition by Zoltan Kodaly) are played over loudspeakers as the massive ufo hovers, the tones are an attempt to communicate with the 'visitors'. Odd but that's what I heard here immediately! Foy Vance is an awesome musician, and one of the best discoveries I've made in a long time.
My daughter introduced me to this talent tonight. Music is everywhere.. but it only counts if it moves me, not you, and this man has. Happy days!
