This is probably the first time a Spoiler Warning has ever stopped me in my tracks. Just the way you describe this game makes me realize I HAVE to play it. Just you wait Cheddar! I'll be back for you!
dude i don't care if you take six months to publish a video, whenever you do it's always such an amazing analysis and interpretation. thanks for showing me this. wish you all the best~
Amazing video as always! Interesting to note how your 'early internet' interpretation connects with the themes of wandering to escape the system to signify that there are still small and connected communities outside of the large platforms today
I played this game one chapter an evening during Covid, after classes from home. I don't remember much about it except it gave me these weird, vivid fever dreams. Now see it in an entirely new light. Might replay it soon.
I'm surprised that krz has so little content on it online considering how immensely deep and interesting it is. I'm glad at least someone is as passionate about this game as I am, because this video was great!
A point of interest before I watch, part of the reason the Act 1 completion percentage is so low is because a lot of people were playing this as the chapters released, so they didn't necessarily go back to the early acts if they played them on a platform besides Steam. Edit - another point of interest, Weaver created the formula.
As a Kentucky resident, KRZ is about how hard it is to survive and thrive in this state. The bourbon industry is full of money in one of the poorest rural parts of the state. Medical amenities are not great but I live in Louisville, so it’s not so bad here. I have friends who are hard, bourbon drinking alcoholics and if I could save them, I would. Kentucky Route Zero gets many of the general concepts correct about this state. Bowling Green is isolated, Nolin Lake and its surroundings are full of trees. The mines are in Eastern Kentucky where there is a huge opioid and meth problem- in addition to drinking- that’s where the real poverty is. The politicians here only care about bourbon, money, mining and covering their asses when miners die, or a coal slurry pond overflows and wipes out a small town- killing the population. Sometimes the dead residents in mining towns are never accounted for. The coal companies are owned by investors in China or elsewhere and they extract coal by ‘mountaintop removal’. Beautiful forested mountains are turned into blackened plateaus by the coal industry. I would love to help write a sequel to this game. My experience as a photojournalist and reporter in rural Kentucky would lend perspective. The sequel should focus on the diminished natural beauty of this state and the obliteration of our natural resources with the approval of bribed politicians like Mitch McConnell- aka: The Turtle.
at first i stopped the video to actualy listen to the spoiler warning... but months later i came back becuse i just didnt have the money, but i honestly have to say, i did not expect you to explain this game, even after a spoiler warning, mosty for peaple who have not played it, and now, il actualy save up to buy it, this video was beutifull, and il have to see what i think kentucky route zero is about
Watching this makes me want to play this game a fourth time. I'm still blown away by just how well done it is. Do you have any recommendations for games w a similar level of thematic depth?
In terms of thematic depth, the only other game that reaches, and maybe even surpasses Kentucky Route Zero's level in my opinion is The Beginner's Guide. If you haven't played it before, it's a game best played in one 1.5 hour sitting without knowing anything about it. Though if you go in thinking it will be like Kentucky Route Zero that may put you off. I guess the game most similar to Kentucky Route Zero, from writing style, to thematic focus, to the complexity in its story would be Pathologic 2. It's not a game for everyone, and playing at its intended difficulty is brutal and mentally draining, though that's part of the artistry behind it. If you enjoyed Kentucky Route Zero for the depth in its story and its beautifully written dialogue, Pathologic 2 offers more of that with a darker tone and a more substantial "game" part. So there are two recommendations I can give, I hope this gives you something new to play. Thanks for the comment!

Disco Elysium is one I’d recommend in terms of memorable point and clicks with a lot of depth
So sad about Conway :(
Have you ever called the WEVP voicemail number? It's still up.
