  • This video is for new spearos/spearas who venture out into the world of shooting larger yellowtail. This by no means is a MONSTER yellowtail, I know seasoned spearos shoot 50-90 pounders, however, this was my experience shooting one over 30 pounds. There were a lot of lessons learned here that I want to share with newer divers.
    0:25 - Yellowtail Spearfishing
    6:29 - Weighing the Yellowtail
This was shot back in 2019 and I've learned a lot about safety since then.
    Safety Recommendations:
    - Dive close to a partner if you're going for big fish
    - Use a float and floatline
    - Use the right size gear for what you're targeting
    - Don't rush things
    - Use situational awareness

Whilst a buddy is ideal, it's not unmanageable. Yellowtail do the same circular motion so as long as you give it enough line to tire out, but keep it away from the rocks and slowly kick backwards away from your reel line your good. Even a bad shot on a reel can be salvaged if you give them time to tire.

Great call on the slow kick backwards to keep the line in front of you. I’ll def add that to my process for bringing them in. Thank you!

@@castandspear I've had it stressed to me by a few good divers since I recently moved to using a reel. I can easily see how having that extra thin line being disastrous!

    Nice yellowtail.
That is another thing I should be aware of. Thank you for the video!

Fantastic situational video! I. have never, impaled and reeled in a fish that size. That was a good strategy to employ by bringing in the fish so it could exhaust itself. What would you have done if it panicked and started circling you entangling you in the process?

Your gun was a bit undersized, but I get why. In that area you should have some power with you. As far as the fight, I’d hold a little more tension on the line. If the shaft slides down the flopper could easily toggle and the fish will swim off. Don’t horse it, but you had a solid shot up front, which is good. Also, take your damn knife out of his head before you hand him off.. lol.

when you have a fish like this remember you have a reel on your gun. hold the butt of your gun with one hand and reel with the other. he goes for a run let him, thumb the reel like you would with fishing to slow them down. this ensures that your line wont rap you up.
