Danny, a tip here from Texas. You should never wrap a tree in plastic. Plastic actually exacerbates the cold. In addition, you should tent the tree, not wrap it. Tenting leaves the ground open. Radiant heat from the ground will be trapped in the canopy of the tree. I teach "tents, not lollipops" in my garden classes. We weight them down with whatever is on hand or make sandbags. Love the results in the high tunnels. I guess I need one now!
Danny I pray for you and Miss Wanda that your health will continue to be well. I am going on 71 and I can’t do what I did just last year and I got my wife that’s getting worse to see after. Still enjoy watching you.
❤❤❤ My Dad grew up on a dairy farm and said they made lye from their wood ashes. He helped his Mom make lye soap with it. They used the tallow from their kills for meat. They made bar soap for bathing and grated bars for laundry.
Good morning Danny and Wanda . During 2024 I gave regular haircuts to my bulbing onions when they were flopping over in the garden. It doesn’t appear to affect the growth of the bulbs at harvest. I do it with my onion seedlings too when they get long and flop over.
I trim the tops of seedlings but don't usually trim after planting. However I'm experimenting this yr with trimming some in ground and leaving the others to grow.
The problem with plastic tree cover bags is the condensation that forms inside the bag. It is better to use a frost cloth cover to avoid ice formation inside.
Commercial onion grower said "when it's to cold for the onion tops to grow, they are growing roots and taking up nutrients and will take off when the cold weather breaks" So there is hope for your outside onions.
Wow, the fresh celery and broccoli looks so delicious. If you grow your own there is no better taste than garden fresh. Thanks for the update, I'm getting ready to plant onions and potatoes in the middle of February.
Up here in Northern NY State, we typically didn't have lime deficiency 35-40 years ago....fast forward....to the age of most farms and liquid maure.... No bedding, no barn floors getting limed on a daily basis.......so now most farms land up here is starved for lime.....
Get candles lit if you can't use a heater on solar❤....get it warm during the day then blow out the candles before you are in for the night...tomato plants go into stress if under 50 for too long...also a warm steamer would help for the night...make sure everything has fabric on it before you put plastic covers on🎉🎉
I have seen rocket stove configurations in high tunnels. ( My fav was a terra-cotta color/stucco type sofa/seating area in middle of greenhouse). Wondering if a jacuzzi might also be helpful. Granted it robs production space, but either would make a nice warm retreat in winter. I just dont know if it would actually be a practical solution
So I’m in Texas and Houston and I don’t have a greenhouse but I have a lot of my plants at the eaves of my house and the bigger pots. I have some big old pots like you the big black ones and my peppers and bell peppers are still doing the same thing is still growing even some tomatoes are still coming along I’m sure they’re pretty tasty but I picked a bunch cause I’m gonna make a salad later on. I got a lot of lettuce growing. I don’t have the things that I was worried about. I brought that in the garage. I have a couple of plants inside I got overwintered bell pepper inside and a basil and I think I have a young peach tree that I’m gonna bring in but everything seems to be good. Or dormant.🌱🌱
About as cold there as it is in Michigan today. I like the greenhouse videos, everything is winter dormant in mine. Supposed to get really cold next week here, below zero temperatures, I hope my peach trees don't freeze again, I had no peaches in 2024.
Your cabbage looks fantastic. Your high tunnel looks great for everything going through the cold temps. I will be below zero with highs in single digits for three days. A long way to spring time for me.
Hello Danny. It's definitely staying warmer inside the high tunnel but a lot of moisture. I'm glad the temps are staying good in the high tunnel and most everything is doing well. It was in the 40's here last few days but going back down below zero again by tomorrow. You still have peppers galore and I think that's great. Seems like some of what you've covered may be alright. I'm glad you were on top of covering things and that has to help.
I don't know how cold it got here last night I remember seeing 34 degrees before I went to sleep early but I am sure it got down to the twenties right now it is 53 at 11;22 AM but I think after these 2 days of mild temps the bottom is going to drop out. With all of your hard work I hope you two will find your plants did fine, It is hard to think of your temps being as low as ours. Everything with our weather is different we know it was going to be but when it hits it makes it real.
I'm in SC & I don't like to wish time away but, darn this winter has been cold. We have a couple days coming where the lows are in the teens & high low 30's. I got a few cabbage & broccoli that are trying to hang on there. Your high tunnel looks great & glad you are getting a few things. Hang in there Peppers, you can do it !! 😂
Good evening Mr. Danny and Ms Wanda. Pray everyone does ok with this extreme slow and cold heading our way. Our onions in the field have taken a big hit. Greenhouse 🙏 still looks ok. Thank you for sharing and have a blessed day.
Borrow the BBQ grills, and fire pits? Best celery salt ever is dehydrated celery leaves, powdered and salt added. You have lots of celery leaves, maybe enough to use as pink-salt/ curing salt substitute?
We are still covered in snow.(Indiana)We are going to have a couple day warm up to hopefully melt it away before cold front returns. We are ready for spring.
Good morning. Praying that the weather headed your way and also our way here in NE Ga isn’t as bad as some of the weathermen have predicted. Stay warm. ♥️🙏🏼
I don't remember what time of year he does it but Kevin at epic gardening trims his banana trees back to around 4 leaves and they just keep going. My coldest day over here in GA is coming next week.. 22-34 range, might even get snow. I'm a little excited about it. Coming from FL, I haven't seen snow in years.
Are you ready for the close we are watching a horse sale in Mize Mississippi. We so enjoy porch time and gardening we have a small place and enjoy working out side
Have you considered planting both sweet corn and some Jimmy Red corn? They can be sequestered from each other by timing their planting so they don’t pollinate at the same time.
You're going to get really cold in the future. In Ohio Fri and Sat warmed a little. Snow in the evening. Sunday is heading down, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are down to 0° or below. Stay as warm as you can, I hope the high tunnels stay warm enough.
Congratulation! Beautiful winter garden for the south. It's time to start applying phosphorus "blooming time"! Cut off the nitrogen. Once peppers get cold that will set them back and may never recover. Unless they are already established like yours. Lucky you saved them. We could never over winter peppers outside up north where I am. I can't believe it's 45 F and you are wearing a heavy coat & mittens like you are freezing to death. LOL! That's a heat wave where I live.
The high tunnel is such a blessing to grow all year! Watching your videos for the last several years about high tunnels have encouraged us to someday build one. Always enjoy the tours! I was looking for Malabar seeds earlier today online. Is yours red malabar?
You seemed kinda down hearted Danny ,not to much but some. Over the onion field but then you said thank the good Lord for the high tunnels and my heart went "bingo",you remembered to be thankful for what you do have...amen and amen...😊
Here in Michigan I think it’s Tuesday or Wednesday something like that, our low is -5 high is 5. This weekend we are having a heat wave ,between 37 and 40. To a lot of us that mean sweatshirts. Even with snow on the ground, which is melting. here in mid Michigan. 😂
