Hi Jayce, I enjoyed your projector reviews, now I'm seriously considering this Mi Smart Compact Projector. But lately there is this advertisement for "Lumos Projector" which had been popping up quite frequently in facebook. I think it's either a Malaysian / Singapore company claiming it's the best projector in its price range. I'm very impressed. VP6 projects around 85 inches from 2,7 meters. But Mi Smart Compact projects around 100 inches from the same distance. Also it's compatible with 24hz and HDR. I think it's really worth it to pay the higher price for this one. Too many advantages. Thank you very much for the review!
That is amazing so i can project more with less distance. I found it as an issue nowadays with vp6..i cant project well 90inchs because it will be on an spot where people pass by my room. I had to project between 50 and 65 inchs only..the good is: i can use even on daylights with this "lower" size.. Having in count that vp6 and mi smart can project around 200inchs them 50inch is tiny..

The only problem that I have with this projector is the focusing issue. When the projector is warmed up, it will out of focus over time. It is because the lens mechanism is plastic, and it is slightly warped when the projector gets warm. I think Xiaomi can fix it on another update by offsetting the focus, in-line with measured internal temps. other than that, it's perfect for the money, the only Android projector with built in official Netflix support AFAIK.
@@Jeredos Nope, but with some fiddling with internal files, you can alter the default fan curve, so the fan will go faster (and louder), thus keeping the internal temperatures & the lens stay in the same temperature for longer.

Nice review but the focusing issue really bothers me. Also, the lack of side keystone correction is an issue as I need to place it on the side of my bed and project the image on the ceiling.

Did you notice any problem with autofocus if longer playing (longer then 30-40min)? A read reviews that becouse over heating of lens system the projector loose focus and you have to corect it manual.
Didn't notice much on small screen. Just tested on 150" screen size. Yes, the center bottom part will out of focus after 20 minutes. Other corners are okay. Re-focus fixed it.

Hey Jayce, I have been using the mi projector (version 1) global with the certified Netflix. I get the HD symbol when choosing a movie (in Netflix faq HD means it is either 720 or 1080 movie) I also get the 5.1 symbol that means it has the 5.1 sound available. But I don't get the HDR symbol as I get on the same movie watching on my smartphone or TV, nor the Dolby Atmos symbol. Witch means the Netflix app is not recognizing that the mi Smart projector supports HDR10 and dolby sound.
Mi Projector is a SDR projector. HDR support is basically decoding only = HDR to SDR mapping. It performs better on SDR. No Atmos symbol is correct as it does not support it. FYI, HD = 1080p. 5.1 = Dolby Digital 5.1.
here are some cons and bugs: you cant change things like picture mode / quality aswell as sound settings on the fly. you have to go back to the options menu which causes the running app to close. on hdmi on the other hand it is possible. i found a bug on hdmi mode.. if you turn off system sounds (menu pop-klick sound) you no longer can change the sound mode no matter what (off, cinema, music , custom) > the slider moves but nothing changes untill you turn system sounds back on again. :)

Nope, won't do it. For image quality, projector can't fight TV at all with the same screen size. TV always win projector at the same price. Why buy projector? It's all about very large screen size. If budget is not a problem, get yourself a 120" OLED TV. Settle!!! 😁

Very confusing. How many versions are there for this model? Very important question - must the projector be exactly in the centre of the wall/screen to project the image nicely or can it adjust the image nicely even if it is higher/lower or at the left/right of the exact centre of the wall/screen? 2 models so far. First version has both China and global firmware. 2nd version is China firmware only. First version supports vertical keystone adjustment only. Second version supports 4 ways. As usual, direct projection gives the best image quality.
I couldn't bring it over my gut feeling and thus i returned this beamer right after purchasing it. I couldnt justify 500 dollars for something i'd only be able to use in dark settings :D from what ppl are saying..price/perfomarnce looks good on this model...but for all those moments where it's still bright out...a traditional tv seems more reasonable but oh well. Maybe another time :)

Jayce, do you recommend the youth version? I found it is more cheap but appears to be a little lower on some specs... So i ask just for curiosity if it isn't too good.. I have a little curiosity why you use genshi and honkai impact arts... Well i am blamed for ask because i also like it very much and well maded ofcourse, i appreciate much because you use your own reference for tests instead of many channels that uses same videos, ofcourse it is also an good idea so every video can be compared with each other... So its just an internal question, dont want to involve much think or trouble between one video content creator and another or to judge anything.
Youth is the same as this one. But with MIUI TV OS instead of Android TV. I am using those arts because others can access them too. Easier for all of you to compare.

No. No. Anyway, MEMC works on 24p video only. If you play video on 60Hz most of the time, no MEMC then. No point get MEMC projector unless you watch a lot of 24p movies.

1. No, bigger is always better.
2. Not really unless you look very carefully.
3. Youth 2 is having the issue too. Same hardware - plastic lens.

Yes, you need to re-focus once after 15 minutes. That's all. No need to do anything then.

I get the HD symbol when choosing a movie (in Netflix faq HD means it is either 720 or 1080 movie) I also get the 5.1 symbol that means it has the 5.1 sound available. But I don't get the HDR symbol as I get on the same movie watching on my smartphone or TV, nor the Dolby Atmos symbol. Witch means the Netflix app is not recognizing that the mi Smart projector supports HDR10 and dolby sound.
Mi Projector is a SDR projector. HDR support is basically decoding only = HDR to SDR mapping. It performs better on SDR. No Atmos symbol is correct as it does not support it.
FYI, HD = 1080p. 5.1 = Dolby Digital 5.1.
here are some cons and bugs: you cant change things like picture mode / quality aswell as sound settings on the fly. you have to go back to the options menu which causes the running app to close. on hdmi on the other hand it is possible. i found a bug on hdmi mode.. if you turn off system sounds (menu pop-klick sound) you no longer can change the sound mode no matter what (off, cinema, music , custom) > the slider moves but nothing changes untill you turn system sounds back on again. :)

Very important question - must the projector be exactly in the centre of the wall/screen to project the image nicely or can it adjust the image nicely even if it is higher/lower or at the left/right of the exact centre of the wall/screen? I read on Mi's site that it is not able to do angle projection. Not sure if angle projection is relevant to my question.

I couldn't bring it over my gut feeling and thus i returned this beamer right after purchasing it. I couldnt justify 500 dollars for something i'd only be able to use in dark settings :D from what ppl are saying..price/perfomarnce looks good on this model...but for all those moments where it's still bright out...a traditional tv seems more reasonable but oh well. Maybe another time :)

I have a little curiosity why you use genshi and honkai impact arts... Well i am blamed for ask because i also like it very much and well maded ofcourse, i appreciate much because you use your own reference for tests instead of many channels that uses same videos, ofcourse it is also an good idea so every video can be compared with each other... So its just an internal question, dont want to involve much think or trouble between one video content creator and another or to judge anything.
Youth is the same as this one. But with MIUI TV OS instead of Android TV.

No. No. Anyway, MEMC works on 24p video only. If you play video on 60Hz most of the time, no MEMC then.
