  • At the beginning of the year, I started thinking about working towards playing live on stage. I created a huge Ableton Project with a bunch of tracks and began figuring out what to automate and what to do live, trying to mix things better to sound good in a venue, setting up Instagram and starting to network with fellow musicians, etc., etc.
I basically turned my enjoyable music-making escape into an anxiety-filled job. Unsurprisingly, this killed all my mojo and I made no progress at all for a couple of months.
I would still like to work towards playing live, but I need to figure out how do so in a way that doesn't feel overwhelming. Until then, I decided to take a big step back and just make a fun little jam, which is what got me back into music in the first place.
For this one, the Digitakt is doing everything except the pad. All of the tonal sounds are from the Peak, with the bass, chords, and chord stab sampled into the Digitakt. Then the Peak is doing the pad live. Digitakt + Peak is an excellent combo.
I really like the rhythmic modulation on the pad. To me, that's where this jam really came alive. To do it, I have a bunch of trigless trigs on the Digitakt's MIDI channel sending mod wheel CC to the Peak. I can sequence those to be as rhythmic and interesting as I want. Then on the Peak, I use the mod matrix to control how much the mod wheel affects the filter frequency. That lets me dial in the amount of modulation in real time.
As always, the filter on the Peak sounds incredible.
B-roll footage was shot on bike trail through Interbay in Seattle.

This is the 10th time I think I played this in 24 hours. Excellent track 👏👏👏
Yesterday I heard this track and it pushed me over the edge, so I decided that it is finally time to get the Peak after thinking about doing that for a lot of time. Thank you very much for this :) Also I really like your "Royal Azure" track, great work on that one too :) Cheers!

Your mix always sounds good, well balanced and compressed, really nice to listen to 💫
Do you apply some EQ and mastering effects on a DAW or do you deal it only through the Digitakt?
    Congrats anyway 🎉

Thanks! I've found that as I do more of these jams, I instinctively get better at having the right levels for the different parts. That's one of the things I really value out of doing a lot of these (as opposed to laboriously doing stuff in a DAW).
Getting the levels right is the most important. Then after that, I'm using the Digitakt's compressor here which sounds really good to my ears and helps make things punchier.
Finally, I do a little amateur mastering in Ableton of the recording. For this one, it was rolling off some below 30 Hz, boosting the high highs just a little for more fizz, and then adding a compressor and limiter to make it loud.
I still have a lot to learn, but going through the process of finishing each of these jams really helps.

Great work. Is the bass a single cycle patch or a sample?

It's a sample from the Peak. I dialed in a nice bass patch, recorded a sample into the Digitakt, and then changed the Peak over to play a nice polyphonic pad live.

@@tinywires nice, it sounds really great even repitched on digitakt. Been looking at Elektron boxes and this is an excellent show off of the digitakt!
