Gary, great work here. I have recently been using my all ceramic grill(similar to Big Green Egg) to make charcoal via retort method. I'm using 5 gallon empty acetone buckets to cut in half and slid together to hold the wood. Drilled holes at the bottom of the 5 gallon retort pail assembly make a burner and let the wood gas escape which at a certain point becomes self sustaining requiring no external additional fuel to continue the charcoal making process. I love using my charcoal grill to make the fuel that it uses-kinda cool. My experimentation has lead me to investigate other uses for charcoal and I'm glad I stumbled onto your videos! Keep up the great work.

Brilliant vid mate, I enjoyed watching that. I have a Ute available to try but the computer and injection had been putting me off it, but I’ll find out what the computer thinks of it soon enough

I can't believe the computer doesn't freak out when you shut off the fuel pump.

Hey Gary, I made my first batch of charcoal last night and quenched it in a water bath overniht. When I went to take it out this morning, there was quite a bit of unburned wood left in the mix. I expected this because I am using a TLUD in 55 gallon drums charcoal making method. What I was wondering is if there is a labor efficient way to sort wood from the charcoal. I was hoping the wood would just float to the top and some did, but some didn't. Do you have any tips for me? Thanks!

+Cory Warneke Hi Cory, The partially burned pieces of wood are called "brands". After some time, you will be able to quickly identify pieces of charcoal that are not thoughly charred and separate them from you charcoal. This is part of the "art" of making charcoal, I do not quench the charcoal made in a steel barrel. This adds too much moisture to the charcoal if you are using it for engine fuel. if you will add it to the soil as biochar than there is no problem in quenching it, Keep making charcoal. After a 100 sessions of charring wood, you will have a better understanding of how to do it and do it well. Keep making charcoal!
      Gary
