You really know how to make a calculator sing! I've had to back up and listen to your here song half a dozen times. Both this and your tear down song on part two of the series are really fun listens. Like tracks from a classic game that could have been but never was. Congrats on completing your VL-1 series!
I tried the Polyvalens emulator in Reaper. once you load the VST onto a track you can click the "UI" button in the track FX window to get access to all the parameters on sliders. That way programming is easy. There's also a "Tune" slider that lets you offset the tuning in very small amounts if need be to match other instruments (I had to set the tuning to about -4% to match other things.)
Also, click the button next to the "UI" button to configure the outputs to both be sent to L and R to hear everything in both ears.
The Polyvalens emulation has the same dingy yellowed look as my VL-Tone!
Wow. Simply wow! Great channel, Dude. Made me instant goosebumps. I’ve been a Casio collector in the 90/2000 and I had almost all of them: The CZs, VZs and all the small keyboards. And I even used to bent some of them (I had them twice, they used to be so cheap). Perfect presentation, video cut, tunes. Ich hab dich sofort abonniert. Weiter so!

I would say PolyValens' VL-1 emulator is the most accurate to me, in addition, it is not sample-based like other VST of the same product. I am really happy with it.
Love the Polyvalens VST. Use it all the time. Probably too much.

If a programmer can’t match these extremely simple sounds, they need to find a new profession. They are not even close.
you inspired me to get a usb to midi cable to try out nano host
using calc u synth in reaktor player puts it into demo mode, wherein sound only works for a limited time
Another fascinating review! Am I wrong or on your VL1 does it sound like there's some form of clipping? It seems to be adding a sort of lower midrange distortion - like some of the internal components are a tad worn out and injecting some artifacts maybe? Which I suppose is what one could qualify as "character"!

Also - I use SaviHosrt/VSTHost for Vsti stand-alone and have rarely had problems with it. Lots of cool features - but now I'm eager to try Nano. Thanks for the info!
Could be, but I am quite happy with the sound. Does yours sound diffrent? I just compared it to some samples I found on the internet and they sound the same. I haven't tried out the version with the larger display yet. Maybe they changed some other components during the 4 years of production.
@@KeenOnKeys That tad bit of distortion (or maybe it's just gain pushing from your installed jack set up) is quite nice! That little bit of lower frequency stuff is what makes it warm and fluffy compared to digital emulations - or at least it does to my ear.

In any event, if I didn't say so before congratulations on this series! I'm certain at some point in the future it will be the reference the whole world points to as definative!

just to add on that, for a friend i specially installed an additional cap somewhere into envelope mixing circuit (as a result of a typical "circuit bending" aproach), so that the thing somewhat distorts (in a good musical sence) on higher volume settings, and also the envelopes and the overal main voice sound come out a bit "more analog" of sorts.
Dam, thought some companies made hardware clones.
If behringer makes one, i’m going to flip out.
The Behringer BL-1
The VL-1 does this unique staccato sound when using a tone with 0 release during Auto Play - a soundless gap between notes no matter how long the sustain is.
I doubt any of these emulations do that.
(and I have no idea how to even re-create that on a regular synthesizer.)
I liked the outro music. What does the glitch button do?

The polyvalens version lags the beguine rythm it repeats the rumba pattern instead
there is too much subharmonic aliasing or glitching in the native instruments one. I like the polyvalens one better, but it doesn't emulate the analog filters for each tone in the vl-1 which is why it sounds much brighter than the real vl-1. (but if you bypass the filter in the real vl-tone it should sound identical to the polyvalens waveforms.
It seems like it's easier to emulate an actual real life guitar than it is to emulate the Casio VL-1's tinny 8-bit emulation of a guitar.

You own VL-Tone sounds a bit muffled, almost as if there was an over zealous (poorly adjusted) band pass filter on the output. Might be worth sticking it next to a couple others and comparing the output, and if necessary grabbing a few readings from the 40 year old component on the output Amp, with a multi meter.
Interesting. I remember comparing the sound with samples from other devices and it sounded very much the same. But I recently bought a second VL-1. Maybe I'll do another test.
These emulator are OK, but these are pretty easy to synthesize. Most sounds are unfiltered square waves with various static PWM settings. Flute is plain square, most of the other sounds are around the 50 to 75%. Use manual PWM, then adjust the ADSR to suit. Some sounds have vibrato of course, to add a little LFO to taste.
Pwm? Perhaps you can mod or make another one more accurate. Please keep us posted
are they 64-bit
Calc-u-syntn is (you need NI Reaktor). The others are 32bit.

The emulation is completely horrible. Nothing matches on the emulator.
