Absolutely... I watched the scene with elvadine in the classroom. By the end I had tears streaming down my face. The characters in this story were so well written that it strikes you directly in the feels because you almost feel like they have been through what you've been through. Perspective and time has only made this movie greater. Truly a classic now.
Have been thinking about this scene for a quarter century. "Cuz it looked like they haven't been given nothin in a long time." It's a reminder to try to act humane whenever possible.
the scene was the dad's acknowledgement of why the lipnicki kids were always picking on elijah its cuz they envied him he had a loving father and home and was actually cared for whereas the lipknicki's had a neglectful father who was a drunk. They were feral mean kids for a reason. And the dad took pity on them and showed kindness instead
Exactly what my dad would have done. Positive male role models are so crucial for a little boy and young men. Something like this changes a kids whole perspective. A kind gesture goes so far. If you haven’t seen the whole movie, you wouldn’t know that he barely has enough money for that cotton Candy. The girl makes a comment that would suggest that So does her brother . But if you see how hard Stus dad try’s to succeed for his family. It is really touching. And makes this scene even more powerful.
This film never got the praise it deserved. I’m an old man now, and this movie still brings tears to my eyes. The lessons in this movie are for adults as much as they are for children.
I watched this movie "The War" on UA-cam for the first time recently. A rare gem, with profound lessons for all ages. Impressive writing, direction and acting, even more powerful as told from a child's viewpoint. If only there were more dads like Stu's, this would be more of a perfect world (LOL, a pun on another excellent Costner movie). Elijah Wood gives a mature performance as a child actor, I wouldn't be surprised that this film had a big impact on informing his courageous comments about the dark deeds within Hollywood in recent years. Watching "The War" has restored my faith in the power of cinema to propagate good themes for human behaviour. Thank you for sharing this clip and for using it for a sermon.
What a powerful scene. I had a hard time grasping the message as a little kid when I first saw the movie. Watching it again at age 12 made all the difference and it has a lasting impact on me to this day.
This is one of the best films of all times from my point of view so many lessons to learn for for all ages. The actors were all amazing in the their parts .It don't feel any more real than this in a movie for me. Kevin Costner u always will be at the top of my movie hero list.If ur name is on it .I'm watching it .Cause it's going to be worth it to buy .Hands down. All kids should watch this .
Then u should watch the whole thing. I never forgot this movie. I never thought I’d grow up and find myself in a situation almost identical to Stu’s, & it’s always been one of my favorites
“B/c Looks like they haven’t been given nothing in a long time ” I didn’t get it at first but looking at it now you could tell those kids weren’t taken care of. Outside all day, dirty all the time. Dad was drunk and didn’t they didn’t have a mom so they all had to look out for one another.
He did the right thing. I Adored this movie when I first saw it the other day, it picked up on so many issues and delt with them in such a perfect manor.
this movie helped me understand a lot of things.. moving town to town never having a lot but just enough to keep going and trying to cope with on going violence around the neighborhood/school. dam this bout the only thing that makes me cry now adays
I saw this movie when I was probably 10 years old, but this scene right here, lived rent free in my memory ever since, hits you hard when the dad says: "They looked like the haven't been given anything in a long time", I remember tearing up watching this as a kid, now that I'm almost 40, made me cry my eyes out.
I remember when this film came out on DVD and I watched it because it didn't make a big splash. When this scene ended, I had to pause the film and take a few moments to compose myself. It has stuck with me ever since and it's one of my favorites scenes in any film I've ever seen. That gesture came from such an intimate, empathetic and intelligent place. Stephen understood where the anger came from and also knew that the only want to truly meet that anger with a positive outcome is to be kind. It reminds of the line Jeff Bridges' alien character has near the end of "Starman" where he says of humanity: "You are at your very best when things are worse."
Everyone I talk to who has actually seen this movie says it is amazing and how underrated it is. The critics got this one wrong big time. It doesn't make any sense. The only thing I can think of is they just didn't like Kevin Costner at that time and no matter what he had done they would have given it negative reviews. This came out a few months before Waterworld and I think no one really gave it a chance. If this was made today with Ryan Gosling or some crap it would win an oscar.
Country hicks were too busy to notice. Different times besides look at how the lipnicki kids were all tore up and malnourished, beat and who knows what else behind closed doors. I didn’t see nobody make one CPS report in the whole movie did u?
When I was a kid I was working with my dad and a couple of black kids stole my baseball out of his truck. I started to yell and climb down the ladder he stopped me and said those kids don’t have anything I can buy you a new baseball. I never understood that at that time.
Always the same that you find out a bully is bullying someone else because he's taking it out on someone else because of what he's going through behind closed doors, but it doesn't justify bullying
It's a very dark film to say the least. While Costner's kindness there is something to behold and respect I have sadly found that most people like that tend to be very ungrateful in regards to kindness and help given to them. That doesn't mean one shouldn't show kindness and charity but it can sometimes be hard. I'm still going to try and do the right thing everyday though, because I know most people are trying to do the same. 95 percent of people are awesome. But the other 5 percent can make it rough on everyone else.
I can’t explain it but this scene makes me cry everytime. Something about the kids looking remorseful and the son being mad and the dad feeling sorry for the kids
The preachiness in this movie is nauseating. The kids sure were delivering some delicious punishment to Elijah Woods via a hideous double team. Then they took their cotton candy and gave the kid another beatdown the next day.
Anyone know where I can find the scene where one of the Lipnicki kids says something like "diddly ding diddly ding diddly ding dong dang" or something like that? haha
When he said "they looked like they haven't been given anything in a long time" it brings a tear to my eye. It's a beautiful scene.
it is much more difficult to repay evil with good than to take revenge
Me too. I always come back to this.
This is such a wonderful movie that nobody ever talks about.
Critics hated it for some reason, but I rented this on vhs more times that I can count
It’s crazy how this movie made shed a few tears as a child but now that I’m older this movie made me ball in tears.

Same. He's the dad my dad wanted to be
I swear me too
I swear Kevin Costner is always casted to be some sort of protector... And it fits him very well 💯

Beautifully put buddy. I’ll remember that.

Dads heart is beautiful💖
All any kid wants is to be loved that's all...that candy represented kindness they never had n money can never buy.
Yes it is
Such a good father and a better man

Good man. What a great example to set for your kid.
Giving them their cotton candy. A great scene.

Haeng-Bum Kim one of those change your life scenes
in my opinion
Underrated movie. Good morals. Today's age wouldn't understand
I'm bawling 😭❤️

Thanks for posting that... still in tears...

My favorite scene in the entire movie.
my dad would have done the same thing. Man, i miss him

Humanity... CAN WE ALL TAKE A DAMN HINT!?!?!
Giving of the cotton candy is one of my favorite scenes.
I see this film, and I think of my dad sometimes
The soundtrack makes this scene a million times better

Stuck with me too.
So many kids like them all over America

Wow I forgot about this movie - took me right back to 1994
amazing movie, lots of tears
Gets me every time
I came here just to here, " .. I know a house your daddy can afford.. of course, a couple of robins livin' in it now .. " @ 2:03
for him to do that that's a real man
Instead of helping the kid they all just stood there like idiots how tf you gonna watch a kid get jumped and not do anything
Country hicks were too busy to notice. Different times besides look at how the lipnicki kids were all tore up and malnourished, beat and who knows what else behind closed doors. I didn’t see nobody make one CPS report in the whole movie did u?
Really good ♥
If everyone in this world was like Stu's dad (don't remember his name) there wouldn't be any war and the world would be perfect.
“The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war.”
When I was a kid I was working with my dad and a couple of black kids stole my baseball out of his truck. I started to yell and climb down the ladder he stopped me and said those kids don’t have anything I can buy you a new baseball. I never understood that at that time.
because they looked like they hadn't bee given any inawhile
Thank you

My favorite movie❤
The physical uncomfortableness by that young actress has stuck with me for decades. She played this so well when Coster approached
Please put up the whole movie! Please! Please!...Thank you!
All those grown men adults stood there and watch them beat him up.
When he goes to the kids to give them the cotton candy and they back up like they're afraid. 😢
@monilove5
I was going to write this exact thing about my dad. (He passed away 10/1/96.)
Happy Father's Day. ;(
As a kid I use to think Ula Lipnicki is pretty cute. Anyone lol
I think she’s cute today 😀

Great film by the great Kevin Costner. He would have been amazing as Atticus
I give him credit I couldn't of done that
I can’t explain it but this scene makes me cry everytime. Something about the kids looking remorseful and the son being mad and the dad feeling sorry for the kids
lol i used this same clip for something similar. I love this movie.
What's up with people staring as those kids were ganging up on 1 kid. ?
i would have done the same thing. that was really nice. i always try to teach that kind of kindness to my little cousins.
Those kids backed up when he approached. You can tell they don't trust adults. That's telling. Hard lives
1:15 I fault all the idiots who are standing around not doing anything.
It's kinda like how things are today... Really
@@jamiegustkey2573 Agree
Still agree.

Richie Havens is singing.
Se ve que hace mucho tiempo nadie les regala nada.
@THEHARRY1861 Ahh, thank you!

the overall production of this movie was garbage.... but if you look at the deeper meanings, it's beautiful
Today's Trump supporters....the Lipnickies.
Thats a lot of flat surfaces
